    Listening back to the comparisons, I'm surprised by how much better the Tom Delonge Strat sounds compared to my 90's Invader Strat. It's got more clarity and sounds better clean. Just a bit beefier, too. And the upper fret shreds sound better on it. The low string riffage sounds about equal to my ears. So I wasn't expecting that. PS- forgot to include demos with the treble bleed when you roll off the volume for cleans (instead of switching to clean channel). Might post a video featuring that later

    Definitely agree about this being overpriced, but for me it's worth it. When I was younger, growing up in a single parent household, I couldn't ever afford to go see blink or dream of buying the early 2000's model. I bought a graffiti yellow cause when I was a kid there was this picture I remember of Tom holding one. I don't ever remember seeing him playing one in a video or live, but that picture alone made me want the yellow one. So yeah, I'm buying it now knowing it's overpriced, but also because I'm a damn adult now and I can afford and own my dream guitar after all these years. Not a partscaster or a used one, but the real deal. Totally pumped!

    Excellent video and review, I’ve made several TD-inspired Warmoth builds over the last few years and it’s my favorite layout for a guitar period, straight to the point, made for rock, no extra nonsense. I haven’t used an Invader yet for the reason you mentioned, but I plan on building a fairly authentic shell Pink version for myself at the end of this year (24).
    One thing I’d like to comment and maybe I’m wrong, but I see a lot of people grabbing these as investments, and assuming that they’re going to go up and value over the next decade or so like the old model did …… Here’s the thing, the timing of this release is a very calculated move on fenders part to capitalize on a very particular type of nostalgia for a very specific, demographic and age group, and it obviously worked, i want one, you want one, we’re both huge Blink fans. That being said, do you think that in 20 years when enema of the state is almost 45 years old there will be another wave of nostalgia for this like there is right now? I don’t think so. I think Blink 182 nostalgia is peaking RN and I don’t see that cycle happening AGAIN, but who knows. I just wondered why people think these will perform the same on the used market like the original batch did?

    To everyone saying go with a warmoth parts build. I thought about building a warmoth Jazzmaster Tom delonge style, in graffiti yellow. Went on their site this morning, picked out the specs I wanted, and with shipping and tax, it was going to be well over $1000, and I still had to assemble everything myself. I just closed the site, went to reverb and probably got the last graffiti yellow strat on there 😂 The warmoth build would be sick, but I also took into account resale value in the future, incase I decided to sell, or needed too. The TD strat would hold value, maybe increase. Parts build wouldn't. That's something to consider also

    I have the exact same story! I bought a Tom Delonge Strat from a friend for about retail and then sold it during college. I had Blink and Boxcar racer posters all over my room when I was young. I was just randomly browsing eBay today and saw that they just did a reissue. $1200 does seem a bit high but they know they're appealing to the nostalgia. I think a lot of people will pick them up to collect/sell this time so I don't forsee them going to the same resale value of the original. But damn that's so cool they did a reissue. And Tom is making those royalties to pay for alien abduction insurance.

    Seems like the biggest difference is signal path. On your other strat, it seems to have a toggle switch for the neck pickup. So there is more resistance in the signal flow vs the Tom strat. All that can make a difference. Tom strat is a little brighter due to less things in the path. Just my opinion though.

    Everything you're saying I think is what everyone is thinking Eric. As a die hard blink fan like yourself, I also had a seafoam green squier that I got back in 2014 for about $175 on ebay (haha) then I sold in a few years later for a Gibson SG and have been regretting it since. Is this worth my arm and leg? Yes and no. Yes because ever since I sold my original i've only been thinking about "what if" and "I was an idiot back then". Now as an adult I still think I was an idiot but this might be the LAST chance I could get arguably my dream guitar back brand new and not used, not to mention I can get it in graffiti yellow which is what I got with Sweetwater. Now $1,300 for a made in Mexico is just dumb and shame on Fender for doing that because in a year or so watch the Starcaster will be coming out but probably but $1,500+. If anyone who reads this is on the fence about it just remember nothing is certain in life except what is happening right now. Do what makes you happy and for me, having a graffiti yellow guitar that I will be playing all my songs on is what will make me happy.

    I love Blink-182 and Tom Delonge was the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place, but at that price, you could build a virtually identical partscaster from Warmoth, just without the neckplate and the Fender branding. But you'll get better build and tonewood quality in the body and neck, and you can customise the necks profile, fingerboard radius etc if you don't the TD's neck. I'd personally would go that route. I'd rather have the build and sound quality over the Fender branding, and it would be a guitar I would keep.

    • @EricBourassa
      @EricBourassa  Рік тому +1

      There's a few really good posts on the Tom Delonge guitar reddit page and a Facebook group that break down going that route. 1. you likely would not save much money and 2. depending on what your time is worth to you, it's a huge time investment picking out and ordering all the parts and putting it together yourself (or paying a luthier).
      If you found an inexpensive used MIM Strat for around $400 I think that would be your best bet. But starting from scratch? You'l likely spend over $1,000 plus time. May as well get the real thing in that case.

      @@EricBourassa I did a little shop on the Warmoth website and found all the components came to about $1000. I've built a partscaster before and it was pretty easy. Just a bit of soldering and drilling, and that was it basically, and honestly it's the best sounding guitar I own.
      Yeah, a used MIM strat might be a more cost effective, but at the price of the TD, I would go the Warmoth route any day. for higher quality parts and custom neck specs. For example I like the 10-16 radius which feels very comfortable for me, and I can have the action lower without fret buzz. Plus it's fun to build.

      I don’t think you could make this guitar yourself with these specs for much less than $1,000 (Squier parts don’t cut it for me). Then you factor in the time and labor for ordering everything and putting it together- nah. May as well get the real thing.

    I've heard about these being "overpriced". Seems like they are but given that they are Tom Delonge Limited guitars, they will perhaps go up in value in the future. I bought the Tom Delonge Epiphone ES-333 when it came out for about $800 or so and who would have thought that now they are going for $1,500+ or so. The Gibson counterpart was about the price of this Strat and now it's going for like $5K.

      I disagree. $849 is the price of a standard MIM Strat. While this can't cost much more to make, you have to figure the cost of Seymour Duncan Invader pickup, Tom's royalties, and the custom name plate. I think $1000-1100 is realistic. $1300 is a bit high, but mine was $1200 at Guitar Center, so not too far above what I would expect. Still high, but not crazy high

    • @garrettstiles7808
      @garrettstiles7808 8 місяців тому

      I agree it’s overpriced. 2 fewer pickups, 2 fewer pots, no caps, no switch, simpler bridge & body routing. That’s a good bit of manufacturing savings; pay the extra for the SD Invader and Tom’s licensing fee with that savings and there’s no reason this should be more than ~$50 over a Player. MSRP on the basic Player is $799, on this guitar it’s $1,299; that $500 upcharge is simply nonsensical unless you’re betting on flipping it as a rarity/collectible in the future (not a bet I’d make).

    Right, I never post comments on stuff let alone negative comments but I think this guitar is getting far too much praise and Fender and Tom Delonge should seriously be a bit ashamed.
    This is a made in Mexico strat which are great instruments, I have one myself but they cost £679.
    An invader pickup can be bought for £126.
    A new pickguard can be bought for no more than £10.
    A mono gig bag can be bought for £150.
    I've had pickups installed and routing on guitars for £50 by my local guitar tech.
    That brings the cost to £1015 and that's with an expensive gig bag that you don't necessarily need to buy.
    This is far too overpriced for what it is. I love Blink 182 and this has nothing to do with Tom Delonge as a person. But if you're a band with a punk attitude charging £1300 for a simple guitar like this is a joke.
    If he genuinely wanted to make a guitar for people with a punk attitude and new players who want to follow in his footsteps he and fender would make it a more reasonable price.
    Look at the Ed O'brien from Radiohead signature fender strat!!!
    It's Made in Mexico!
    It has a sustainiac neck pickup, a custom shop texas special in the middle and a seymour duncan JB junior in the bridge!!!!!
    And includes a gig bag for guess how much?? That's right £1,050!!!!!!!
    Ed O'brien made this guitar for young players who want to be able to play like him and actually make a quality instrument at a correct price. He made this instrument with genuine care for the consumer.
    This on the other hand is a SHAMELESS CASH GRAB. This has nothing to do with love of fans, this is a way of making a shit tonne of money off a guitar that isn't worth it

    • @EricBourassa
      @EricBourassa  Рік тому +1

      that's a great point, and I pretty much made the same argument at the end of my video. It's worth the purchase if A) you want to resell it in a few years, or B) you don't want to take the time to piece something together. If you factor in the TIME required get the parts, drive to the luthier or install parts yourself, etc, you have to ask yourself what your time is worth (and that will be different for everyone).
      Listening back to my video, I hear a clear difference between my MIM 90's Invader Strat and the new Tom Delonge. The Delonge is superior in tone. I didn't hear that difference while I was playing but it's obvious to my ears in the recording.
      So you can build one yourself for about $800 or you can spend the extra $500 and get the "official" version. Just depends on what is most important to you

      it's comparable in quality to other guitars in this price range. What's been tough for me (and probably a lot of us) is that the prices of instruments has increased so drastically since 2019 that we still expect 2019 prices for new guitars. I still think of a MIM Strat costing $600-800. But that's not the reality. Anyway, if you try this guitar versus other $1,200 guitars on the market currently, I think you will find this Strat is one of the better sounding, better playing, and nicer looking guitars.
