Question: Does the Lehigh Valley Railroad Single Chime whistle sound the same as the PRR banshee? Or is the LV whistle at a slightly lower note? The LVRR used a 3 chime whistle for passenger engines/mixed-traffic engines, and a shrill single chime whistle for freight engines.
DiamondJubilee I’m not really sure what LVRR used for passenger and freight, I know of two surviving examples of LV whistles. Both are Hancock, one is a flat top and the other is a steptop. They are both longbells of course.
Single chime bell whistles similar to the PRR's own freight 'banshees' were used on switchers as well as some classes of road freight engines; others carried Crosby chime whistles.
CJ Holden The 3-chime is probably an Ashton since PRR/B&M/LIRR used them in service. That was the whistle that Mount Rainier #5 got as a gift from a rail fan that really cared about the #5 even though #5 originally had a 5-chime while in revenue service.
Love the control on the Banshee whistle, "HOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEE"!

What engine sported the 3 chime originally?
ALW Productions not that it holds 100% true, usually, the banshee would have been on freight locomotives, and the 3 chime passenger on the PRR.
PRR T1
@@Leatherface123. That or a K4.

I usually go up to central pa and railfan there

The 3 chime sounds like the MTH Railking PRR 2-8-0 whistle (PS2)
Fun fact: this whistle was also used on R&N #425 in the 90s

I'd pay to get actual drawings of these whistles... Machinists need to be able recreate these sounds accurately.
in my opinion the PRR 3 chime was the best sounding to me
Wow... I love the banshee whistle... But, what engine/ railroad is that?
banshee is on an aultman taylor 20-60. 3 chime is on the shay #4 at the r&t fairgrounds in kinzers pa

nope
Beautiful engine, too... that whistle really suits her...
that is a PRR 3 chime. Me and my dad are looking for one of those, we have been looking for around 6-9 months.
I wish this can happen again one day.

Good for bad neighbors who play music too loud.
I do the same thing, but with recordings.

The banshee sounds like Mt. Rainier 0-4-0 #2 and the PRR 3-chime sounds like Mt. Rainier 2-8-2 #5.
