Cheyene, oh my goodness, I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up and live now. I just started AAPC in January, and I was also told by EVERYBODY, that the Cardiovascular and E/M chapters are what "threw everybody off." I need to learn how to code an E/M! Hope you aced the test!
I just took my CPC exam on Saturday June 11, 2022. My first try: I got a 71, and I'm ecstatic! Yes, I'm envious of those who got 80+ on their first try, but then I hear about so many others who really tried, two or three times, and kept getting 62-69. On the breakdowns, I got a 100% in the 30000 Series, which says it was cardivascular. I did the worst in E/M with 33%. Anatomy and medical terminology both 50%, which is no shock, and before I got my score, I thought "would have killed me," if I fell below the Mendoza Line (70). Getting 50% in Anesthesia was disappointing. Sorry to hijack this thread, but now I have another mountain to climb: I'm now finding out FULL bore, about this "won't hire an apprentice" deal, and now I'm signed up for Practicode. I feel like I'm doing another study ALL over again. Goodness.

You're absolutely right on medical necessity. Guess what? In over 18 years - the stinking thing hasn't changed much, LOL. From the coding to auditing these charts, we have collaborated with utilization review nurses and ER providers (PAs , NPs , and Physicians/Residents) and built tools and crosswalks to help both sides understand one another. Some things have changed for testing in 2021 as you know, and they make us figure out (so I've been told) the MDM first, then find the code, opposed to them giving us that info. Here's where I need help if you can answer this for me. What information do we need to be searching for when deciding if the code is based solely on MDM or when we need to use the history, exam, and MDM for the code? I completed all my courses with AAPC recently and will be taking the exam in the next couple weeks. Thank you, Victoria! Patty

At 4:22 you start reading the definition of 99213. Where are you reading from? Because the entry in the 2023 CPT manual doesn't read like that. It doesn't mention components at all. Thank you!
E&M is hard even for experienced coders. Good news -- on the certification exam they just tell you the level of history, exam, and medical decision making and you just pick the level. You don't have to score out each component individually.

Hello, quick question. In regards to the CPC exam i failed by 60 questions on my first exam I did online, can I except to have the same questions for my next exam or would it be a whole new set? Thank you for all your wonderful videos, I have definitely been watching these to help with my exam.
So, when taking the CPC exam, you won't need to actually do any leveling yourself? They will provide the levels in the questions for all the E/M questions? Because the leveling is the thing that I think I am struggling with the most right now.
In 2021 they did not make you level, but now that the leveling methodology is printed in the CPT book for codes 99202-99215, they may make you level those codes.
I typically utilize the scorecards available on the Novitas website -- www.novitas-solutions.com/webcenter/portal/MedicareJH/pagebyid?contentId=00004968 Generally, I use the pdf of the E&M scorecard but also use the specialty ones depending on what specialty I'm coding for.

Well visits are also known as preventative visits and are coded by age. Turn to page 3 in the 2021 CPT book and look for the heading "Preventative Medicine Services" and it will give you the code range, which is broken down by age.
Valid for 2021 except for codes 99201-99215. Those are the only ones that have changed for 2021, the remaining E&M services that are leveled still use the prior history, exam, and MDM requirements.

Hi I really need your advice!! A mom of 2 . I have a B.C.in business. I started Biology and English classes in 2018 to get in to Sonography. I stopped for some reason and I wanted to get back now. But still confused between Medical coding and sonography. It matters for me that spending more time with my kids and I knew that medical coders can work from home. Is it guaranteed that medical coders work remotely ? And After while if I want to develop my degree and get HIM master . Are those HIM people can work remotely? Another point you have mentioned in previous video that You need to learn a software editing thing ? Is that related to programming or IT specialist ? Thank you
Lots of medical coders work from home, but it's not usually common to find a remote coding position right after getting certified. Typically employers won't hire newly certified coders for remote work. That's not to say it never happens, but it's less likely. I think given the current climate, that may change. Some employers that were previously reluctant are noticing the benefits of a remote workforce. A good way to get a "feel" for the current climate is to go on codersdirect.com (they're a job posting site just for coders) and start looking at some of the requirements for the job postings that are out there. HIM really depends on what you're doing -- I'm not familiar with what the common non-coding positions of HIM professionals are these days. Medical coders don't need to know software editing -- only I need to know that because of having to edit videos for UA-cam. :)
I am taking my CPC exam for 2nd time, I think my biggest issue is speed, is there tips on how to flip books faster if Aeschylus question has multiple codes?

Only codes 99202 - 99215 are based just on MDM effective January 1, 2021. You can find the new MDM grid on pages 16 & 17 of your CPT book.

I was reading from the 2021 book since that's when this video was produced. There's new videos for the updated version of how to code E&M.

There's multiple versions of the CPC exam so it's likely they'll give you a different version for your second try.

It really depends on what the organization decides, I've seen anywhere from 10-15 notes an hour.
Would DTap and Polio be considered vaccines or prophylactic drugs?
