Basically, almost all social media is used to just market a bunch of shitty ads to their audience or to treat them like guinea pigs and use them for social experiments. Plus, algorithms are still in their infancy, if you were to watch one right-leaning UA-cam video, suddenly you're entire feed is full of feminist cringe compilations and videos on why x people are inferior. At the same time, there is the much more unsettling opposite idea of the domination of my screen persona over my "real" self. Our social identity, the person we assume to be in our social intercourse, is already a "mask" that involves the repression of our inadmissible impulses. But it is precisely in the conditions of "just playing" - when the rules regulating our "real life" exchanges are temporarily suspended - that we can permit ourselves to display these repressed attitudes. Take the proverbial impotent shy person who, while participating in a cyberspace interactive game, adopts the identity of an irresistible seducer or sadistic murderer. It is all too simple to say that this identity is just an imaginary escape from real-life impotence. The point is rather that, since he knows that the cyberspace interactive game is "just a game," he can "show his true self" and do things he would never have done in real-life interactions. In the guise of a fiction, the truth about himself is articulated. The fact that I perceive my virtual self-image as mere play thus allows me to suspend the usual hindrances which prevent me from realising my "dark half" in real life. My electronic id is given wing. - Zizek

My biggest fear is that some people may not take you seriously because of who you are and your reputation, but honestly this is one of the best pieces of thought offered on this quickly heating hot topic.
To throw my hat into the ring I can certainly agree that social media has it's positives and negatives, and both of those can be accelerated rapidly into highs and lows. As an autistic and depressed man I can definitely say that social media has given me an outlet to experience things that I have never. Making friends, being moderately popular and well liked, people caring about my opinion etc. But I can also say it has made me significantly more socially reclusive to the point where I get anxious even thinking about going outside. It's 100% a double edged sword with no clear right answer, I suppose that is just the status quo with modern, unexplored and solemn researched topics.
Your part about body image definitely hit home for me. Now more than ever it is easier to see hundreds if not thousands of people who are more conventionally attractive and more successful than you in that matter of seconds. It's like staring at an abyss, one that you cannot hope to surmount; And when it stares back, you are just left feeling worse and worse about yourself. And this is one of the many traps one can fall into as many have already.
I appreciate you offering your thoughts, asmongold

I've noticed this with a lot.of streamers who start out, claiming they are so positive and nice only to build a community that follows every move and praises every action, even if it's done to tear someone down. If they do something negative, they say, "I'm not a nice person IRL" and they cheer. If they say, "let's attack this person" their community attacks and tears it down. To me, those who are surrounded by the drama, at a certain point, create it for themselves and they crave it so much because it is much easier to tear someone down than it is to build themselves up, or go seek therapy.

He was like this on stream. The early days like late wod through legion. The retail content was so mundane that he spent a lot of time talking with chat like this. I have recently adopted a lifestyle that tries and deals with these issues on a personal level. I agree with everything said here and can give personal feedback, tuning down the usage of social media and exchanging it for real life social interaction has helped me develop in many ways. I think people in general need to listen to themselves more accurately, actually have a conversation about what they want and are. Doing this and accepting your opinions and feelings as they appear, then you can work on yourself, then you can see what you are doing wrong (from your perspective) and you can slowly become somewhat better. Doesn't have to be huge aims and they should be reasonable, but aim at least and work towards that goal.

Waking up and see another 20 people cancelled, people harassed for their views, and people that hate or love something to the point of driving them crazy is so painful. To put yourself in that situation in a daily basis is bad, but we all now that it has its good points, like checking on someone you use to hang out with is nice.
And this kinds of videos or just talks are amazing for just giving thought to what is just accepted nowadays, and the way people behave in social media is just like its a "trying to act good" (refering to the video pewds uploaded about twitter and philosophy), only makes us look more away from each other and what we really think. • @camelhoarder850
    @camelhoarder850 5 років тому +16

Yeah, I'm pretty excited to watch this video, especially that it took me some time now to ponder upon that problem.
People partake in actions because they are motivated with rewards either conciously or absolutely without their knowledge. It was always people's goal to develop their social skills and create new friendships as some could flourish into extremely valuable long-lasting relations. It seems, like social media allowed that evolutionary need to be dimmed by the illusionary, alterantive reality. Unfortunately, "virtual points" as pewdiepie put it, became the longed for reward. Out of the social media, the worst are the applications by which you can share your "achievements" like the distance/time of your bike rides. It's always motivating to beat yourself, to get better and healthier. But once you begin to share your accomplishments with everyone around the social media, you bind your sense of reward with these "virtual points". And that's just purely dillusional.
It's always good to ask yourself whether the shit I put in social media truly engages anyone on the other side of the screen. But the worst part, in my opinion, is that it's actually two-step process. First of all, young kids begin to watch non-educational shit on UA-cam and other platforms, and then they try to transfer that bs into their own life.
You can also observe some funny phenomena: it's some kind of "double-grip". First, people get addicted to social media, and then they are being convinced that they all fully aware of that fact. Some when you talk with someone and ask the question: do you think that social media has a negative effect on people's life, they will surely confirm. But then, when you check their Instagram account, all you can see is over 200 posts and over 500 followers. It will never stop to amaze me.
It's just a dead cycle. Every psychological studies within the last couple of years seems to prove that the rates of depression and heavy mental issues rise. Suicidal behaviours and self-harm attitudes within the group of 10-14 yrs old girls have risen by c.a. 250%...
As a matter of fact, people are statistically stupid. The distribution of intelligence is actually a normal distribution. It's sad, but not many people are capable to possess the critical thinking skills - something I would call the most important skill of humanity; something that unlocks the doors into the real world. I don't know how it looks outside my country, Poland it is, but here a lot of people tend to seek the advice in "coaching" and "personal development trainers" - people who make businesses of talking bullshit to people and selling them the "recipe for happy life".
It's really funny and sad at the same time, that the ones who truly seek the answers for happy life are being called "boring" or "stupid", while it's social media that enhance the stereotypical thinking that everyone can become someone, that followers matters, that these people who put a "like/heart/laughing emoji" on your photo are really curious about your life in the positive sense. And whenever the problem appears, people look for answer in - I call it - street wisdom. A type of wisdom that is used by common people, probably our parents, most of our friends, and majority of people that surround us. A wisdom, that probably has some sense, but does not offer any critical solutions for our problems.
I just wonder, when that world will crumble? What is the line of the illusionary world build on the fundaments of popularity, fame and social acceptance? What is the cost of boosting own self-esteem on likes and number of followers? But you know what is the worst part of that shit? The majority, no matter how stupid they are, will always be the decisive part of your society. It's them who decide: in politics, in economics, everywhere.

@@camelhoarder850 'sup dude. I have a bit of a theory on the reason as to why our people go to these "coaches" to buy crap that doesn't work.
As a fellow Slav (I'm not from Poland), I've noticed that a lot of my people are still very much into folklore and history, which is fantastic. But it comes with a caveat, they are also very much into alternative medicine and alt-science and what-not, that actually come from old folk tales and shit. It's usually harmless typical stuff, like if I get a cold my mother will tell me to make some soup, brew some tea etc. etc. But sometimes I'm just baffled by it. Just to give you an example, very recently my own goddamn sister, who I thought was smarter than this, bought tea, that was advertised to be able to grow your breasts. Breast-enlarging-tea.
I don't know how much of this is true at all, there is no research this is based upon, it's just kind of funny to think about.

Great wording. It's not shocking social media is making a growing of depressed people in the young generation. It only creates envy, unnecessary desire, and anger to those we can't control. Sadly, it's also true there is nothing much we can change how the media behaves. Big entities like corporations and corrupt governments want weak-minded citizens, and apparently, using and exploiting social media was the perfect opportunity for them. George Carlin puts its "The game is rigged, people".
Not saying we can change, but we have sadly ingrained ourselves into a big and unnecessary hivemind. Not a lot of thinkers, who can express their thought individually without the conscience of others. It's just one big blob of ignorance.

@@Overphased Thanks for response. That is quite interesting what you're writing here. It truly might be something "rooted" in our slavic nature. On the other hand, alternative medicine is well-known all around the globe. As I mentioned, the thing I call the "street wisdom" is a toss-up. It means, that some "traditional" methods of healing are actutally accurate, but usually by accident: let's take a chicken soup as an example. It is being said, at least in Poland, that chicken soup can heal the cold. And funnily enough, it's quite true :) - first of all, eating ANY kind of soup while it being hot, warms up the organism which is desired while being sick. On top of that, making chicken soup with SKIN ON THE CHICKEN STILL ON, releases cystein, which has healing properties - but somehow nobody really says: remember, chicken has to have the skin on :)
And that's precisely what I am talking about. A lot of the "street wisdom" is correct simply by a pure coincidence - and what is really important is to know "why". The same people that seek answers in "street wisdom" will also believe in irrational ideas, and the same people won't be able to connect cause and effect. So people who tell you to eat chicken soup while being sick may be correct, but they will also be wrong with many other cases. That is what makes "street wisdom" a bad habit.
You say it's harmless, and I agree. Homeopathy and placebo effect seem to be harmless too. Yet, would you prefer to live in conscious society, or the one who make assumptions without reason? as the same people who follow objectively good ideas by mere accident, will be the ones to to follow bad habits. :)

Super insightful commentary on an extremely relevant topic in today’s world. Nice to hear someone of similar age (I’m 27) speaking from a well-informed and thought-our perspective on something that really affects all of us. My wife is 5 years younger than me and I have definitely had my eyes opened up to how drastically different social media can play a role in a persons life; and that’s just comparing my own life and my wife’s.
Also nice to see someone as big a presence on the internet as yourself taking the time to speak on a topic like this and shed light in a way that’s digestible. Videos like this can really serve as a good gateway to open up a conversation that someone out there may need to have. They could simply put this video on in front of friends or family and it could really help someone out with opening that door.
Good on you man. Happy holidays and look forward to your next video and/or stream.

Really really interesting video. As a teacher at a highschool it occured to me that a ton of the "safe use of social media"-workshops revolve around topics like sexting and cyberbullying whereas young people categorizing themselves based on what they see on instagram/facebook is in reality much more common and mentally impactful. Food for thought for me.

Probably the most important rule of using social media for me is "if you want to do something bad to wrong people, just leave them ignorant". Same applies to real life. Yes, in some cases it makes me passive, and I could get some social points and ego trip, but whatever. I dont feel, that it's reliable source of food for ego anyways. I used to argue before, at least to writing skills(in russian, not in english, just in case :D I just know, that I probably would procrastinate the comment, if I'll leave to think about it deeper), logic, but at some moment I felt, that it's so meaningless even after 3 lines of a comment.

I was simply happy. I think I finaly caved in and they finaly chipped away at my thick skin. I do miss posting on forums but knowing the majority of personalities of people that lurk there? Just remembering their names makes me think of all of the times I tried to get them willing to hold a normal discussion. Then seeing their names, 1 thing with WoW being garbarge I just have too much free time and actually going to bed to 2 hour+ early every day. Crazy how Social media and forums kept me occupied for 2/3/4 hours a day.

But at the same time I love it. Think 2020-2029 will be interesting decade for me. Won't stop gaming but think I will start over with social contacts. Get rid of toxic ones and bring reasonable ones, the ones who can handle criticism and difference in opinions. Wow these long talks are pretty damn substantive. I really like this. Of course, I am -NOT- part of the majority here on youtube since most of what I watch are science, history docs and games. Keep this up. Your voice and tone is very calm and relaxing I really enjoyed it because of that and that you hit this issue on top of the head. I tell my GF that social media sucks and I'm 28 but I spend ZERO time on social media (The ones other than youtube/twitch). It always makes me compare myself to friends of random strangers. I'm not a fit guy, I'm not a small guy. 6 foot 210 lbs I look alright but I'm not ripped AF like the guys on Instagram so I feel weak and fat. I don't have a programming job in SF like people from my high school graduating class. I finished college a little later then most so I'm just starting a career when they all finished before me and are already on their way in a career and traveling. You just compare your life vs theirs and it feels like absolute shit. What's fucked is it's just a facade, you KNOW that the people with all the travel photos have money issues, you KNOW the couples are not 100% happy all the time... it's just a small snapshot that they took hours to make to LOOK great/awesome to their peers.

I really enjoy these types of 1 on 1 videos where you talk about controversial subjects. You do this at times on stream and I just really enjoy it.
On the subject matter, I view social media as a necessary evil. It's a tool, much like a pen or a sword, that changes its use based on the person who uses it, like you mentioned a bit in your video. The conversation shouldn't be pushed towards the eradication or disuse of social media (not saying that you were making this point but just addressing it) but rather the responsible use of it.
The point you touched on about young impressionable girls using social media to find their self-worth isn't a new one. Girls since before the social media of nowadays in magazines and televisions, and even before that going back all the way to times of kings and queens, used celebrities to gauge their self-worth. We (both men and women) even do it to this day. "[Breakout artist] makes $30 million at the age of 23" Most people go and look at themselves and say "Shit, I'm 27 and I still don't know what I want to do with my life."
The difference between what has always happened back then and now is the accessibility and the speed at which everything is viewed. The internet has improved society in some aspects and ruined it in others. I'd like to say more but the topic is so nuanced as you said which makes it tough for me to sit here and write out my entire argument.
To conclude my point though, social media is a necessary evil because while it can cause detriment and hurt, it can also spread happiness and good will. It's all about how its used.

I think social media is a tool like everything else. I used to use it for different reasons and posting a lot of pics of myself and my life. Now I’m 26 I don’t have time for social media any more. I’m married and I’m also dependent by my mom, dad, grandfather, and business to have that much time for that type of social media.
Every once in a while I’ll turn on your stream or talk to close friends on Snapchat to get my mind away from real life for a second.
But I mostly use social media for finding advice and how to videos about things relevant to my business.

What bothers me with social media is that I always compared myself to other people and I would always end up getting depressed because people would post things that made their lives look perfect and I would think my life is complete shit. I've learned to stop doing that. It seems like on social media a friend is more a quantity and there can be people that just see you as a number. These days it gets tiring trying to remember what is PC or not, and if you make one little error on a social media post, people blow up and with that anonymity behind a keyboard, people will say things that they wouldn't say to a person's face. I agree that nowadays everything is so digitized that people seem to be locked in their rooms with cell phones and the internet and it has tend to bring out the bad in people. Social media can be a good thing or a bad thing - it just depends on how people utilize it. Appreciate the video.

To be honest, I don't really watch your stream anymore because it looks like you've been trying (again) to, simply, make the stream "entertaining" while it only makes it bland, empty. But when I watched your previous video and this one, I really really enjoyed it. Anyways, hope you do what YOU think is good and be content. Also, I love the transparency here 9:50
