The Jupe character continues in the film through the balloon. The Jupe balloon is fist bumping Jean Jacket at the end just like kid Jupe fist bumped Gordy and Jupe's voice on the loudspeaker is the last lines of the movie.
We get to see young OJ and young Jupe as they learn about animals. OJ learns to love and respect them. Jupe learns to exploit them for profit.

Up to that point, Travis was a local celebrity who was known to star in a few commercials and had lived in peace with his original owners for like 12 years. I didn’t quite get the point of the Gordy subplot at first, but I also realized that it had to be there for a reason. It had too much screen time not to. So I spent the night thinking about it, and eventually figured out why it was so important.
I think a lot of people didn’t take the time to really think about it before writing it off as pointless, which is unfortunate, because it really ties the themes of the movie together.

I hated this movie when I first saw it - but… it stuck with me. I kept thinking about it so I went online to see what people thought and then, so went to see it a 2nd time… This movie is *begging* for a 2nd viewing… Peele is a genius. Almost everything has a double meaning… What I’ve noticed is that people who watch a lot of movies tended to “get it” right away… For some of us, who really only come out for special occasions (ie- a new Jordan Peele joint), it was harder to grasp… My only gripe with the movie is that when I watched it at first, I felt I really didn’t understand what was going on or how all the pieces fit… I mean, so knew it was an alien but like, the spectacle itself eating people and projecting their pain - that part of it was lost on me at first. I had to read up on it and then see it again… I don’t think a “summer blockbuster” should be that hard to access. But once you do, it’s a masterpiece…

Dude. Every time you said "Gordy's Home" in this video I heard "God is Home". Then thinking of the famous shot of Jupe looking up into the belly of the beast...ZOIKS.
Completely agreed that the Gordy content was crucial. It informed Jupe's state of mind that caused his actions. And yes, absolutely sad that the only way he could process that trauma was by thinking he had a special bond with something perceived as an "other". After all, he was the token Asian kid in an all white sitcom family. Maybe he felt that Gordy was perceived the same way, as part of the family, but still an "other". He probably wanted to believe that was their connection.
I'm starting to think that some people wanted another "Signs" or worse, "Independence Day". Of course Peele subverted all that. Surprised that people were at all surprised they got something different.

Thank you so much for this review!! I watched this movie last Tuesday with my brother after he begged me to take him, and I had a blast with this movie. My brother, however, was disappointed. I think the main difference between us is the fact that he mainly uses apps like TikTok and is elated when his videos garner attention, while I use apps mainly for talking about my day with friends and I usually delete any posts I make that become popular. I think our different reactions to "spectacles" determined whether we liked the movie or not. My brother wishes that there was a spin off of Gordy's Home, as do many other people who watch the movie, but I think this *is* the spin off to Gordy's Home. This movie is about Jupe and how he grew (or didnt) after the incident. I believe that anyone who is begging for a spin off in this age of pointless cash grab sequels missed the point of the movie. This movie isn't a spectacle to watch mindlessly, it's a work of art that has a message and meaning to it, and is begging people to take something away from it. I think the people who would have begged for a Gordy's Home spin off would have definitely been one of those people in the crowd with Jupe as they got killed. Excellent review!!

Incoming Jupe character analysis: the way trauma affects the brain is to rewire it. When we experience something so terrible that we feared we might get hurt or die, we often become vigilant towards anything like it in the future, to the point that it can control us, it can steer our actions. We can even come to expect that it will happen again, can live our lives waiting for the tragedy to return. Because it did once, what's stopping it from coming back? Its like we are waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Jupe has probably lived most of his life enveloped in showbiz. It's all he knows. He has no other tools or methods to express himself with, so he uses what he knows to earn a living and establish an identity. But the shoe is still standing up.
Like Gordy, like the Haywood ranch, Jupe was a token. He was the Asian kid in the western, on the sitcom. He was not a person with an ethnic background, he was a prop. Jupe clearly felt so much sympathy for Gordy, saw himself in the apes he worked with. He wanted to save the apes, wanted himself to be saved from an industry that dehumanised him and used him. But he becomes the exploiter himself. He uses OJ's horses as bait, commercialises his own family, his own trauma, to try and face the oncoming spectacle, the tragedy that he expects to happen again.
He tries to use Jean Jacket, not just to earn money, but to reshape a traumatic event in his life, to take control of a moment where he felt completely out of control. And he wants to make a connection with something that reminds him of Gordy. The apes were his friends. But they were also wild creatures capable of incomprehensible power and violence, just like Jean Jacket.
So he invites the monster in, hoping the other shoe will finally drop. And it does, but he does not have the skills to manage it, and so he is consumed by the spectacle.

  • @lkeke35

Well the reason they don’t understand the film is these are not people who practice media literacy. They don’t really read films. And they got caught up in the spectacle. When a viewer gets caught up in the spectacle you don’t “think” about what you’re seeing, only feeling it, and that’s normal but this is one of those movies where you have to do both, and I don’t think they’re used to doing that.
For such people it’s just a string of different spectacles happening on the screen and they’re used to having those images directly related in sequence to each other. When those images are out of sequence they don’t see the connection, I think.

This is very long overdue, but I absolutely loved NOPE, it's my personal favorite from start to finish, it stuck with me ever since the first time I saw it. There were so many hidden details I found in the film, from the shoe standing up to everything else.
The Gordy's Home scene & the star lasso experience had me creeped out so badly. Anyway, Jupe's character was really unsettling because of the trauma that he went thru on the Gordy's Home set when Gordy went on a rampage and killed the cast members, but when Gordy saw jupe, jupe was looking at the shoe standing up because he was waiting for the other shoe to drop, that's what save him from certain death. Etc, when I found out that Jupe was feeding the Haywood's horses to Jean Jacket, I was shocked because he was the spectacle. hope that made sense lol

I couldn’t find a single review that wondered “why did the protagonist share a name with OJ Simpson?” Seems like another nod towards spectacle (the actress on set is visible shaken knowing his name is OJ and he’s back) since the OJ trial was just a huge fuckin mess. I think a lot of people want to seem smart so they watched the movie, read a review, and didn’t actually bother to think about it for themselves. This board has a lot of great ideas and theories! Really cool to see so many people using their own brains and not just repeating what they’ve read others write. Art, especially when it’s a film like this (you’re shown so much but there’s no exposition to explain it) is so much more fun when everyone gets to bring different ideas to it. I think Dan played the character that way on purpose to get that point across - that he is really close to/understands these animals… Which lends itself to him understanding “the alien”

They can’t associate OJ with Zapatista’s and The Scorpion King and have him essentially murder w creature who was clearly there long before any of them.
Why is Jupe wrong for trying to tame the creature but our protagonists are considered justified in picking with it and ultimately killing it. Taming is clearly more ethical than killing.

Why did Antler sacrifice himself for a magic hour shot when it very clearly was not the magic hour? It was like 2 minutes later. If Jupe knew the creature for any amount of time he would clearly know that if you look at it you die so why would he put it in front of an audience that includes his wife and children?

-Well, yeah, it says have empathy for animals, but if they're trying to kill you aren't you going to try and deffend yourself? You'll just stand there and let the animal kill you?
      - They never once tried to kill jean jacket. They only tried to capture it on photo or video. Jean Jacket dying due to trying to swallow the balloon was not completely intended.
-Antler sacrifices himself for the perfect shot because it's made abundantly clear in the scenes he's in that he's gonna die soon anyway. He's very ill and when he sees the opportunity for the perfect shot, he takes it.
      - Jupe is not trying to tame the UFO. He's sacrificing horses in order for the UFO to show up and make a spectacle out of it. You're the one that says that this film encourages animal cruelty but also cannot see the difference between the main characters, who are just trying to record the UFO, and Jupe, who is killing animals just to capitalize off of Jean Jacket?
      - Angel doesn't show up to a crime scene to get the batteries. He steals them and almost gets busted. You keep taking shit out of it's context to say that there's a lot more things wrong with this movie than there actually are.
      - Jupe didn't know that if you look at it you die because of many reasons. He's not a professional animal trainer, so he couldn't have made the same assumption that OJ did. And also, if he's doing that show in the first place, it means that he hasn't seen any people die to Jean Jacket. When OJ makes the assumtion that Jean Jacket only eats you if you look at it he's seen many people die to it. It's so obvious that it's weird that I am the one having to explain this to you,
All of this points come down to common sense and just not turning your brain off while watching the film. But other than that, this film is trying to be entertaining first, and delivering a message second. There's more things to a film other than the message it's trying to deliver.

@@adrianolmedos - If there was dangerous animal I wouldn't go from a safe place back to it and goad it into attacking me for a picture. If it was a registered endangered animal they would get locked up if the hate mob didn't get to them first. If I was being attacked I would kill it but there are people who with endangered animals and the idea of killing such an animal merely because it killed a people is ridiculous to them. I can probably find the interview where such a guy who works with tigers said exactly that. That's an extreme position but the film opens itself up for that. Such people are going to fill spoken too at the beginning and insulted by the end.
      - This is like going into a tigers cage at the zoo to get a picture with it. And again if it was an endangered species the defense of "I didn't mean to kill it. I killed it on accident by sending a balloon at it that I knew it would try to bite\eat and that blew it up" is not going to fly.
      -
      - yeah I know that he's ill. I'm saying that if he associates the perfect shot with sunset or the magic hour then that clearly was not it.
      - the people trying to get a picture to sell to Oprah who end up killing it are capitalizing off of it as well then. A lot of people are saying Jupe was trying to tame it echoing a line in the film where someone says "you cant take a predator you just enter a contract with it." I just used tame to describe feeding the creature to show it off. If you want to debate the accuracy of of my usage of word " tame" and its etymological roots that's a different discussion...
      - Yes Angel stole them and also got busted. He stole them from the cars of the dead people from the show. You're not saying anything contrary to what I said. They could have just not shown him getting batteries in the riskiest way possible. They don't have powerful batteries at an electronics store?
      -
      - And you're missing what I'm saying. If Jupe has encountered the thing before and lived that must have been because he somehow figured out that you cant look at it. If he didn't it would have eaten him. And yet he doesn't understand that a crowd looking at it would kill them.
