Babel Restaurant whistleblower speaks out since going viral

  • The Labour Department is currently inspecting several businesses around Gauteng. The hospitality industry, particularly the restaurants, is being accused of exploiting workers. One restaurant worker took her plight to social media. Babel Restaurant whistleblower Mihlali Nobavu recorded a video on 13 September and it went viral. Nobavu has more details on how her life has been since the incident.

    A few year's ago I applied for a job at Sevruga (Waterfront) The salary was commission based too and obviously based on tips, I spent so much money traveling there and on my 3rd night I got chased away just like that with no explanation whatsoever, no contract, absolutely nothing in place. I hope their payment structure has changed.

      Apparently you must make a tip off alerting the labour department, stipulating the establishment and so on. But I highly doubt DA would allow such raids in Cape Town. I just don't see it happening.

      Most private sectors are into exploitation, slavery and cheap labour‼️ Most are even deducting Provident funds from employees that doesn't reach where is supposed to be.

    She must have been quite a lousy waitress to only make R100.00 during a twelve hour shift. Customers enjoy tipping good waiters.

      She said she received a lot of job offers. Also if she pursues her MA in Psychology as stated, she can have her own practice, work at SAPS, universities etc. Her network with EFF and ANC will come in handy too.
