Because it's a cactus made to survive on little water. What they're going to use/sell it for we'll have to wait and see, there's no shortage of mescal or tequila.
Smart! Even though California is the most populous state, agriculture uses over 75% of CA's water supply. Almonds are one of the most water intensive crops and they are still everywhere here. It is madness.
agave spirits, yes... but tequila, won't. it's illegal to call it "tequila" if it's not made in mexico , therefore they can't sell it..they'll have to rename it ...and with a different name is gonna be hard to sell, even if it's the same thing
Im an Agave grower my self in Jalisco, Mexico & Agave out of Mexico can’t make or call it “Tequila” because is regulated by the Mexican government. But like he said, he can call it Agave Spirits
it also takes close to 7 years to reach maturity. easy way to take 7 years off and then have a fresh force of new mexicans that can jump right in and do the same work they were doing back home.
It's much easier to move these giant factory cattle farms to a place with water than to bring millions of gallons to those factory farms in the middle of the desert.
Like when the USA holds about 90% of the water from the Colorado River and almost no water reaches Baja Califonria, endangering even the vaquita marina.
Climate change is accruing worldwide and not just in the US. There are worldwide droughts in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America is being reported daily in the news as river water levels drop. The rise in climate temperatures are melting the ice caps and raising the sea levels as sources of fresh water diminishes as rivers and lakes dry up.
In (#1:26) "Six years before they are ready for harvest", we will be in "climate cooling" with lots of rain returning. No reason to over react as it's all cyclical.
shifting your crops in response to climate, that's called survival, keep trying to grow the old crops when the climate doesn't support it, species ending. Evolution, Change, Moving On, we can't keep growing the same crops in the same places. the Bread Baskets are going to have to move to new areas for successful production.
Since the California government doesn't want to invest in desalination plants to provide their own water, I guess growing cactus and agave is all some farmers can do. It will be tequila soon.

One agave plant makes from 2 to 5 liters of tequila (of course that's depending on the size of the plant and the proof of the liquor).
It’s about time!
Real talk it does look fantastic I wouldn't mind trying it myself🤔

Extract water from the leaves.
The California farmers have to grow crops with less water and growing Agave plants is only one example.
This did not age well 🤣 we are not in drought no more.
"A study out this week" is a great way to cite your source. My 3rd grader did a study saying there's no climate change
Because California will make all kind of things
Mainly misery.
Agave is good 👍😎
Agave is a lot less water intensive than many other crops, this is an excellent move.
Yep...just as I suspected; the reason is: Water.
Tequila!💖
I guess the price of tequila - agave spirits, will go down soon

Right plant right place. A lot of people use agave syrup. But still. Grow what you can.
I love sake lol
They grow rice in Sacramento, so there you go.
Why? For tequila! Ai ai ai!
Drought happened due to farming

I wonder if these plants need to be watered
They do to get them established. Once they are then they require little water.
Why isn't Mr. Ming talking here?

because they won't have to retrain all their workers.
what the weather can grow.
No extreme flooding nor cold.
So you're getting rid of fruits and vegetables so Mexicans can Harvest tequila. How very stylish of you!
You can make other products from agave besides spirits.

Please don't invest your money using your agricultural clairvoyance.
Yeah in six years it will be less CO2 in the atmosphere. It is all cyclical, no worries these is an invention of the cientist Mr. Magoo.
