I'm not gonna lie. I'm okay with the lepin sets where LEGO doesn't sell the set. Is it still illegal? Yes. Is it immoral? Maybe. Does it bother me? Not really.
I'm not happy with it. Lego employs thousands of people and I feel genuinely cares for its employees and customers. The product is I'd say on the slightly expensive scale. But its a very high quality product too. With Lepin you certainly got an illegal product because it is stealing Lego's copyrights. Also because the product is illegal it's highly likely the employment is illegal even by Chinese standards. Buying a Lepin product also is likely to be exploiting child labour, slave labour and just generally driving living standards down anyway. Your driving down worker's human rights simply buying the product. You can argue that Lego places itself out of the reach of the poorest. Well if a company like Lepin exists its placing more people out of reach of products in a fair world they would be able to afford. In a sense if I could picture a single symbol of what is happening. I would show a picture of a Dragon eating it's own tail.
I agree with not buying ripoff sets. But in a country with (best i can tell, I can't find it on paper) 30-50% tax on real Lego and often another 50-100% markup in (even legitimate) department stores, price is an issue even if it isn't a big one. I dont think I have seen any Lepin sets on Aliexpress for a while. But I have seen some unbranded Technic compatible sets of parts (not models) that seem to be good quality based on the reviews and are probably about 80% of the official Lego prices. Does that sound like Lepin? What are your thoughts on buying such sets if I want a good selection of parts but don't want any pre-designed models?
I think it's great that you have done what your conscience led you to do. I'm going to say though that in order to expose counterfeits and scams, it is sometimes necessary to get your hands a bit dirty. I sometimes purposely buy from ads that I know in advance are obvious scams, and a few people have commented to say that I am contributing to the problem by giving money to the scammers. Big picture though - if you buy a counterfeit and talk about it, and as a result of your warning, two people avoid buying the same counterfeit, it's a net win.

You're quite right. Incidentally, yours is the only channel I've ever seen that makes a point of warning potential subscribers of the variety of your content. I once bought a collection of all the old Lego Ships for big money, but (even, after what i learned later) its a pretty da** good deal. Long story short, one of the Ships, the "Black Pearl" wasnt Lego, it was Lepin. I didnt like fake stuff, but i built it anyways because i didnt want to send all the Ships back because of one ship. also it looks good between the other....but dont look to close, because some bricks have really bad quality

I buy Lepin sets. I’m 16 and I like to make mocs and I’ve recently bought 3 MTTs, 5 Gunships and 2 Dropships and tbh there not bad. Only cost me £230 for all of it and seen as I don’t like to spend to much money on my lego mocs and these sets helped me build my felucia (200x200 in size) moc. It’s great for people who don’t have enough money to buy the real stuff. Don’t knock the people that buy it.

Dont feel bad. We all want to save money occasionally, so counterfeit products are the main go-to. I bought about 8 Lepin sets and surprisingly, I loved them (call me what you want, but I refuse to get rid of them and am planning to buy more). Most were actually stolen unofficial MOC ideas, but I was very happy to get a Lepin Koenigsegg that matched an unreleased Lego MOC. It was great, and I still have it today. Despite criticism from Lego and its fans, I grew to love this Chinese company, though it was not legally making toys, but who cares? It's not like I'm buying anything dangerous that can cause physical harm to other people around me in public (I'd understand I I bought a functioning AK-47 that didn't need a license, but this is a toy that doesn't seem to hurt anyone physically). Yes you could make some spike strip to prank visitors, but when used in a proper set, it's harmless to other people's safety. As a copyright critic, I support a counterfeit company's wish to make the world more affordable and encourage any businessman to do the same. I heard Lepin has a successor, and I might try some of their toys in the near future.

I broke down and bought Lepins Poe Dameron X wing just to see the difference. It was only 15 dollars but it hasn't arrived yet and it's been almost 2 months

I hate fake lego like lepin although I think other brick brands can be quite interesting as they can have other licences like mega blocks with halo but I would like to know your opinion on it such as Wilkos brick sets and there "original sets", are they a bad or a good? Because I'm in the middle.
Older times when I was making some amatorial silicone molds of some miniatures i used some legos bought on ebay to make custom boxes for the silicone molds. That legos were a mix o genuine and fake legos, but worked good enough for the purpose

I got a set of pirates of the Caribbean minifigures on amazon for about $10 and thought I was getting a great deal because they were main characters and got them and realized they weren’t real Lego figures. I was disappointed. They look ok from a few feet away but once you get in close you see the colors are off and the sheen and texture of the plastic isn’t right either. I don’t know if they were lepin or not but I suspect so. I keep them as a reminder not to fall for it again.

the only fake lego I'm ok to get myself are some fake lego minifigures. only because we never get these characters in lego form (Like I wanted Topaz or Skurge or more Thor characters... I mostly got missing Thor characyters X"D I need to start on that Thor Moc one day)
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the new CaDa C61041 Masters Super Car. I am no expert, but it seems that CaDa is owned by Lepin, but the brick designs they use have all expired patents which makes them open to anyone to copy. If there are bricks still under license then they make alternate bricks. This model is not copied from an existing LEGO set. They bought the model design off the designer T-LEGO, and don’t market Lamborghini anywhere so so don’t appear to be breaching any proprietary information or branding laws. I used to work in the luxury brand industry so like you I am very sensitive to counterfeit goods, but this seems to be just on the safe side of the line. Maybe you could build one and do a series of videos on the process and your conclusions.
I've been buying the Qman Enlighten bricks sets from AliExpress, mainly because they do a range of ships from the Octonauts show my little boy really likes and so far we've been pretty impressed.
U know what's funny is that people say they are loyal to Lego by not buying lepin but they literally make the set and then they make a slow motion of them breaking it just saying I like Lego more because they are original but I still don't have any problem with lepin

This is the truth and reality: A LOT of people enjoy Lego because they enjoy the building process ! For most the enjoyment becomes a lot less as soon as the build is done. Ofcourse building a B model is sometimes an option. But let's get real here, do we really play with it once it's done ? I am sure most do NOT play with it for hours on end and the majority of builds becomes a sculpture and collects dust. In that respect the cheap knock off kits will most likely give you just as much fun building it and while most end of sitting on a shelf anyway the actual torque and tightness (overall quality) won't matter much. We do see that Lego becomes extremely expensive and they don't always offer a B model as standard so the replay value drops. I think the genuine Lego matters to the collectors and genuine Lego fans but the majority of people won't be bothered by a kock off. As for the price it 's not just a bit cheaper, it very often makes a 40-66% difference which is the difference of buying something or not. I am NOT endorsing it but i can understand the sales and i think Lego needs to come out with Updates on current sets, meaning that after let's say 2 years they release a new model based on that set and giving people a B or C model and upping the replay value. Also the Lego service is far from great, it's like ordering a lunar module from Nasa just to get a simple Lego replacement part. For the current pricing Lego needs to up their game and service.

You have always been very anti lepin and have always made very good videos about counterfeit lego. Anyone with a brain can clearly see your videos in no way promote or condone buying fake lego. Okay, so, my thought is this: if a Lego set is £85 (like the Lunar Lander) Vs Lepin clone @ £15 - the people who buy the £15 Lepin were never going to buy the Lego set anyway. Likewise with IPTV Vs Sky - £10 Vs £50 - those who watch IPTV (and put up with its quirks) were never going to buy Sky. Bootleg albums and films, Pirate bay etc. You're looking at every Lepin sale as a patron stolen from Lego when they were never going to buy Lego anyway. THAT'S where you're going wrong. I regularly torrent new films, HOWEVER, if it's good, I'll get the Blu-ray for my collection (thank God I didn't waste money on Birds of Prey!) likewise books, albums, TV shows etc. - I have hundreds on various display shelves. There's so much crap out there that demands a heavy downpayment, I like trying before I buy and that's where counterfeit comes in.
Personally I wouldn't ever buy lepin, but I could understand parents buying it for their kids as they really wouldn't know and don't care as long as they can play with it. Aswell as that lego is mega expensive especially for the bigger sets.

I wouldn't dream of buying a Lepin set. When you think that Lego is providing good genuine jobs to thousands of people and genuinely cares for it's employees and customers. We have no idea of the working conditions Lepin employees are under and it's obvious they are illegal because the product is illegal. The reality is buying a Lepin set you are supporting some form of employee exploitation. But you fessed up and I hope this video is a cautionary tale for many others considering to buy a Lepin set :)
Why are you ok with ordering counterfeit apple products and watches but not lego products? They’re both huge corporations that overcharge for their products, what makes lego so special? I hate fake lego like lepin although I think other brick brands can be quite interesting as they can have other licences like mega blocks with halo but I would like to know your opinion on it such as Wilkos brick sets and there "original sets", are they a bad or a good? Because I'm in the middle.
Older times when I was making some amatorial silicone molds of some miniatures i used some legos bought on ebay to make custom boxes for the silicone molds. That legos were a mix o genuine and fake legos, but worked good enough for the purpose

Are they really countereit? I don't think so. 'Fake'? Perhaps. 'Illegal'? Quite likely (depends on jurisdiction, I suppose). IMO, not counterfeit - no one is under the illusion they are actually Lego.
Yes, they are stealing IP, yes they are destroying and damaging a brand and yes they are replacing a purchase from the legitimate company, so yes counterfeit is correct.

I got a set of pirates of the Caribbean minifigures on amazon for about $10 and thought I was getting a great deal because they were main characters and got them and realized they weren’t real Lego figures. I was disappointed. They look ok from a few feet away but once you get in close you see the colors are off and the sheen and texture of the plastic isn’t right either. I don’t know if they were lepin or not but I suspect so. I keep them as a reminder not to fall for it again.

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the new CaDa C61041 Masters Super Car. I am no expert, but it seems that CaDa is owned by Lepin, but the brick designs they use have all expired patents which makes them open to anyone to copy. If there are bricks still under license then they make alternate bricks. This model is not copied from an existing LEGO set. They bought the model design off the designer T-LEGO, and don’t market Lamborghini anywhere so so don’t appear to be breaching any proprietary information or branding laws. I used to work in the luxury brand industry so like you I am very sensitive to counterfeit goods, but this seems to be just on the safe side of the line. Maybe you could build one and do a series of videos on the process and your conclusions.
I've been buying the Qman Enlighten bricks sets from AliExpress, mainly because they do a range of ships from the Octonauts show my little boy really likes and so far we've been pretty impressed.

This is the truth and reality:
A LOT of people enjoy Lego because they enjoy the building process !
For most the enjoyment becomes a lot less as soon as the build is done. Ofcourse building a B model is sometimes an option.
But let's get real here, do we really play with it once it's done ? I am sure most do NOT play with it for hours on end and the majority of builds becomes a sculpture and collects dust.
In that respect the cheap knock off kits will most likely give you just as much fun building it and while most end of sitting on a shelf anyway the actual torque and tightness (overall quality) won't matter much.
We do see that Lego becomes extremely expensive and they don't always offer a B model as standard so the replay value drops.
I think the genuine Lego matters to the collectors and genuine Lego fans but the majority of people won't be bothered by a kock off.
As for the price it 's not just a bit cheaper, it very often makes a 40-66% difference which is the difference of buying something or not.
I am NOT endorsing it but i can understand the sales and i think Lego needs to come out with Updates on current sets, meaning that after let's say 2 years they release a new model based on that set and giving people a B or C model and upping the replay value.
Also the Lego service is far from great, it's like ordering a lunar module from Nasa just to get a simple Lego replacement part.
For the current pricing Lego needs to up their game and service.
There is also Cobi which make Lego Army sets

You have always been very anti lepin and have always made very good videos about counterfeit lego. Anyone with a brain can clearly see your videos in no way promote or condone buying fake lego. Okay, so, my thought is this: if a Lego set is £85 (like the Lunar Lander) Vs Lepin clone @ £15 - the people who buy the £15 Lepin were never going to buy the Lego set anyway. Likewise with IPTV Vs Sky - £10 Vs £50 - those who watch IPTV (and put up with its quirks) were never going to buy Sky. Bootleg albums and films, Pirate bay etc. You're looking at every Lepin sale as a patron stolen from Lego when they were never going to buy Lego anyway. THAT'S where you're going wrong. I regularly torrent new films, HOWEVER, if it's good, I'll get the Blu-ray for my collection (thank God I didn't waste money on Birds of Prey!) likewise books, albums, TV shows etc. - I have hundreds on various display shelves. There's so much crap out there that demands a heavy downpayment, I like trying before I buy and that's where counterfeit comes in.

Personally I wouldn't ever buy lepin, but I could understand parents buying it for their kids as they really wouldn't know and don't care as long as they can play with it. Aswell as that lego is mega expensive especially for the bigger sets.
I love Dr Jake’s videos. I have no interest in LEGO or the other fake knock off types, but can’t say that buying fake stuff warrants any type of apology and certainly not to the UA-cam watching public. People just need to get on with their life’s and stop preaching if they come across something they don’t like.

I wouldn't dream of buying a Lepin set. When you think that Lego is providing good genuine jobs to thousands of people and genuinely cares for it's employees and customers. We have no idea of the working conditions Lepin employees are under and it's obvious they are illegal because the product is illegal. The reality is buying a Lepin set you are supporting some form of employee exploitation. But you fessed up and I hope this video is a cautionary tale for many others considering to buy a Lepin set :)

Jake, you may like to look into it, Lepin is still alive and has commenced production again recently, they are now selling with the brands called 'King', 'Queen', 'Jack', 'ZEBRA' and 'Lion King'.
