3 years. 3 years i have avoided every sugar base products that I usually consume and I went from 178 to 145 lbs. I usually sleep 9 hours and weekdays would be 12 hours now I sleep max 7 hours and I exercise 2x in day, eat once and work w/o feeling fatigue during the day. Best decision of my life.
I’m 3 years refined sugar and artificial sweetener free this November. I suffered with Ankylosing spondylitis for most my life but in the last 2 years the pain and inflammation is nothing like it used to be!
I have given up sugar and processed foods because food has taken over my life since the age of 4. I am 56 now and overweight weighing nearly 200 in January. I have reduced my weight to 171 and still going down. But the best part is the cravings and binge eating have stopped. My mood is so much better and no body pain. Sugar was and is a drug that for me was very toxic.
I stopped sweets in January. Afterwards, I consumed about 1 sweet per week instead of 2-3 per day. I lost a dress size in 6 months. After listening to Dr. Casey Means' interview on Tucker Carlson, I have decided to stop ultra-processed foods and I'm going to cut back even more on the sweets and just save them for holidays. The first 3 weeks without were very hard, NGL. But after that, my cravings dropped dramatically and I could look at sweets in the grocery story and not want any. The only thing I still craved was ice cream and cola when I got hot. Now that we're about to go into fall and cool down, that craving should go away and I should be home free. By the time next summer rolls around, I shouldn't want it at all anymore. (It's already to the point that when I do have ice cream, I often don't like it because it's too sweet. At best, I enjoy about half of the smallest size you can order. No more large orders or a whole sleeve of cookies or a 5 pack of fun size candy bars.)

Absolutely. Sugar triggers spikes insulin levels which triggers fat storage AND stimulates cell division. Any nascent stray cancer cells will start to divide and obviously this is what we don't want.

And yes, you're getting older And it's more unlikely gonna kill you, but that's what they want. So they don't have to pay out social security. Been on Carnivore Diet since July this year. I was on Keto for two weeks then transitioned to Carnivore. First three days of Keto is not that horrible for me, sugar cravings are there but I kept on thinking about me being hooked in a Dialysis machine or taking insulin when I get older so that helped a lot for me.
Makes sense. The food industry puts sugar in everything because it is subsidized by the government, so it is WAY easier to relapse because you can't get it out of your environment without enormous effort, Whereas the same cannot be said for alcohol/drugs. Because we've been surrounded by sugar all our lives, it is difficult to have the appropriate emotional response to how evil our food industry and the state are for doing this to us. Imagine how the response from people would change if they had put alcohol in everything and gave it to children so they are addicted for life. One is viewed as normal, whereas the other is horrifying, even though they are the same idea in terms of ethics.
🦋 Dr. Lusting, I was diagnosed with sugar, grain, acid, dust, feather allergies. What I thought to be a curse as a child, turned out to be a blessing. In my 70s, 5'1", 110 lbs. exercise 6 days a week, no pain and no meds. Three sisters who smoked and drank alcohol excessively died at 46, 64 & 65. Genes are only 20% of who we are. My 85 year old sister who doesn't smoke or drink alcohol just started her Spring cleaning.😂 Life is a wonderful adventure! Quality of it is important and not to be taken for granted. Another thing to keep in mind when listening to Dr. Lustig is that he is from Brooklyn and got his bachelor’s degree in nutrtional biochemistry from MIT. So if you’re wrong, he is going to let you know it 12 ways from noon. He is a scientist’s scientist. More power to him.
Over the past two years I thought I came off sugar. It was a response to my pancreas and liver being messed up due to visceral fat caused by consuming too much sugar over the years, namely Cola. I did lose weight, but i found myself returning to a bit of chocolate here and there. Why so? When i really started checking, sugar is found in pretty much everything. Even when i was informed that i should opt for black bread as a healthier option, i discovered many brands contained sugar but under a different term. Now i have gone cold turkey. 3 weeks ago i cut out everything. I only eat meat, vegetables, berries and some fruit for fiber. I know I've cut out sugar totally because the effects are now different. It was never this hard before. The symptoms: feeling like I'm depressed, no desire for anything, want to stay in bed, moody, lack of energy. I do feel I'm getting better: I've lost weight, i can fall asleep without melatonin (having some chocolate before would make me sleep badly and give me restless leg syndrome at night). I do have less brain fog, my taste buds are more effective, i pass MUCH MORE liquid i.e. less water retention. I was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, high levels of insulin, basically pre-diabetic. A lot of that has been reversed but i need another week or so to come out of feeling crap. I also have this feeling of wanting something sweet but know I'd punish myself if i did. It really is insane what sugar does to us. I'd also add that people might think they've totally cut sugar out but still consume some products unknowingly that contain it.
I've learned to cut down dramatically on sugar. The odd thing is that as you cut out sweet foods, everything starts to taste sweeter. Apples are now too sickly sweet for me; tomatoes (garden, not shop) taste decently sweet. When I walk through the supermarket and walk past cereals and biscuits, my stomach churns just looking at it. The bread aisle here in USA smells disgusting, like a nasty caramel smell. I still like real bread, although now I eat it only as a rare treat, but the added sugar bread is just revolting to me now. Garden green beans and zucchini taste sweet to me now. So dont think your food will taste bad if you cut out most sugar. Your taste buds will adapt and you'll get the same pleasure, just at much lower levels of sugar. I would love to drink cola occasionally, but its way too sweet - I wish someone would make a cola with just 25% of the sugar, and I dont mean by adding sweeteners or allulose. So on the rare occasion I drink cola now, I dilute it heavily with soda water. Not the same because all the other flavors dilute also. So its important to be aware that if you drastically cut down on sugars (and possibly carbs, I cut out most of those too), your taste becomes much more sensitive, and your food tastes much better. Fruit and veg in particular.
@@Sweetie8387 If you can, grow some of your own vegetables. Not only will you treasure eating them more, because you grew them, but in many cases, getting the veg from the garden to your plate as fast as possible makes a massive difference. Asparagus, sweetcorn and peas all seem to have much better taste the faster you can cook them from harvest - in part, because sugars convert to starch. Also, the mineral density should be higher. Adding a fat like butter or olive oil also helps.
I was a chronic-bingeing sugarholic. Some days I’d eat a dozen donuts a morning. Other times I’d eat a 40oz bag of skittles in 5-7 days. I had a terrible addiction. I quit cold turkey on Feb. 10th, 2018. I would pass by a sweet snack and would involuntarily reach for it. I would get this surreal feeling kind of like being somewhere that you shouldn’t be. It took a long time to break that feeling. Now, I have 1 cheat day every year. I eat my birthday cake.

@@Rosebud2503 I'm pretty sure alcohol and sugar are quite similar in the harm they do to the body. If one doesn't kill you, the other will. You can stop. It's really not impossible.
I have decided to go on Whole30 for the month of Jan. 2024. I was hooked on sugar, and my hormones have been out of whack these past couple of months. I am allowed no added sugar, no processed food, no dairy, no fried food, no caffeine. My skin is already clearing up. My energy is not high, yet. But it is getting better every day. I will be buying more sea moss gel to take daily. My digestive system is still getting used to this, but it is also improving. I mostly cook at home so I know what’s going into my food. I have found some fantastic recipes for Whole30 so excited for this journey.
I quit red meat & pork, caffeine,sugar, & processed foods only 8 days ago & already my psoriasis is almost gone, brain fog gone and all my aches & pains are gone. I'm never going back! And I lost 8 pounds so far- just water so far but feeling great!
@Paula-or8yh Just Try cutting back.. I try not to eat any added sugar items more than ONCE a week. I stopped drinking Store bought Orange juice for breakfast because of the 25 to 30 grams of sugar in a serving size.

A first-time listener here, and I've only listened to the first half of the podcast, but I absolutely agree with Dr. Lustig. Growing up, my stepfather was a baker and my mother baked cakes, pies, and other goodies throughout the year. We were all sugar addicts. Every time I wean myself off of it, I am less sluggish, tired, achy, and lose belly fat (along with exercise). Inevitably, I return slowly back to desserts. I tell myself, oh just one little piece. After listening to Dr. Lutig, I got up and threw away the cookies I bought yesterday. Now, I'm beginning to dry out again.
I m going on 3 weeks of no process sugar and my friends and family tell me I don’t need to cut sugar out because I’m thin. But in doing it because inflammation in my joints and bad memory. I feel so much better and I actually have more energy and I’m never hungry because I eat fruit and Whole Foods!
@@lindadurand247 Yes and no. Living on fruit is a bad idea, but a much worse idea is living on an identical amount of pure sugar. Drinking orange juice is much worse than eating whole oranges. Because Fiber.
Absolutely top talk. I’m subscribing to this channel. Please hurry and spread this to all UK GPs. My gp laughed at me for going ketovore. However, my bp, which has been high for 35 years, is down 20 points, was 140/95. Now 120/75. A1c down from 38 to 30( UK measurement)That’s all in 8 months. Even my cataract has started to clear. Update. 4 weeks after first post. Eye exam yesterday at the clinic, not the opticians. Cataract gone! I am truly amazed. Could the sugar in my old diet have caused it?
Because you dont have to go keto, if you eat marginally processed carbs like wholegrain bread or cooked potatoes you'll be right as rain. Its the cookies and deep frost pizza that kills you. Thats why a gp would laugh i guess

I'm telling mine. I even told the doctor who diagnosed my diabetes that I hope from now on she suggests diet before drugs. She wanted me on metformin and a statin as well as seeing a dietician. I told her that you only make one change at a time and I decided to try low carb and it worked. I did see a dietician and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs. I'm doing a Carnivore diet and have cut out all sugars the best I can. No bread or grains. I've dropped from 310 pounds to 250 pounds and want to get down to 160. That's what I should weigh for my height. I'm 5' 4" and will be 64 on the 24th this month.
There is no "should weigh for my height". Everyone's ability to tolerate fat is different. Some obese people are healthy, some thin people are sick. Also, the curves have been shifted as he describes for biomarkers. So basically get to the weight you need to be to be healthy, and stay there. Whatever that weight is. Go by the test results, not the scales.
Except the Australian paradox where consumption of sugar and refined carbs decreased by 20% but obesity still increased by 300% in the same time frame.
Just let me say that I loved this podcast. Nothing is more refreshing than to listen to an informed discussion by two accomplished professionals with good delivery skills. I only disagree with one thing you said and that is that it is impossible to enjoy unsweetened chocolate. I eat unsweetened chocolate every single morning. Once I became used to it, I have acquired a taste for it. I liken this to people who drink black coffee as opposed to coffee laden with dairy products and sugar. People expect chocolate to be sweetened but it’s absolutely unnecessary to do so. I so believe in the nutritional benefits of cacao that I am starting to learn savory recipes using it.
I have returned to coffee in the morning over tea to reduce sugar. I put a pint of milk in my several cups of tea and don’t like half and half in tea. I found coffee to be bitter so thought about putting unsweetened cocoa powder in my coffee. It worked! Now the coffee is no longer bitter.
I'm always amazed how dr Lustig is able to pull very specific information and data out of the bag without relying on any notes during these unscripted conversations. It sounds like he really knows what he's talking about, which is why I tend to believe him.
If he knew his subject better, he'd include that alcohol is full of sugar: a person that drinks alcohol may only be drinking alcohol because that's where they get their sugar from.
@@srsr8037 He mentioned that in one of his other podcasts. Not everyone consumes alcohol, but pretty much everyone consumes sugar, that's why sugar is the focus and rightfully so.
Took me about 6 months to get off sugar. I used low sugar high cacao dark chocolate. 1 oz a day. Just 3 grams of sugar and I don't have cravings. Even for the dark chocolate. I don't do keto or carnivore. I just took out ultra processed foods/carbs.
@@nancyferland6044 3 grams a day of what? Sugar? 3 grams of sugar is what is in 1 oz of dark chocolate. What do I eat? Eggs, cheese, keto friendly tortilla, banana, blueberries, Greek yogurt, carrots w/hummus, pecans, and dark chocolate is mostly what I eat.
Sugar is addictive but giving it up by changing to a low carb diet is very easy and you do not miss it ever, just start your low carb diet in the morning and avoid sugar and you will never miss it or crave it ever again.
Robert Lustig replied to one of my emails a few years ago. (over 10 years ago) I have never forgotten him or his advice. I think he deserves a Nobel prize. Yes, I am a sugar addict. It is one of the hardest things to give up. But thanks to Robert and his messaging try.
I quit sugar three weeks ago and woke up overnight. I've watched Dr.lustig videos for ten years and finally did it. 24 hours later I was AWAKE. Now my body is burning fat. Cravings gone. I do a recommend one cookie a week for that mental transition part. Thank u!!!
I did it 8 years ago. Dr. Greger (not fat) got me started. He and another dozen or two-dozen doctors are my "gurus" now. There's nothing like being FREE of the sugar monster!
The best I have felt in my adult life is when I got off of added sugar. Every aspect of my health and life became better. Lost weight, had more energy, was happier, joints stopped hurting, skin was better, it was amazing! Then I made the mistake of thinking I could have a "treat" now and then. I'm right there with you. I quit sugar in June, and the withdrawal was hell, but I gutted through it. It takes an iron will to stay away, but I do one day (or hour) at a time. It's worth it...Good luck to you- be strong!
Basically - but when you do that you also get rid of a lot of extra carbs and bad fats. Very few things (except actual fruit) have natural sugars and no added sugars. It pretty much cuts out packaged foods. @@rodneypayne5124

Moderate carb diet made for me by my dr. I also cut out all white potatoes, rice and the like. Ive lost 21 lbs in 3 months and still going. I feel great! I definitely am addicted to sugar.
I gave up sugar 6 months ago and my chronic insomnia went away immediately. I gave up wheat 5years ago and my chronic hemorrhoids went away in 2 days. All grains give me skin issues.
4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!
@@elizmal533 it was prescribed for diabetes. I have been so successful with my lifestyle/dietary changes that in the near future I will be halving the dose and eventually coming off it altogether.

I am almost 'normal' blood sugar after 5 months, whereas I have met people who remain on meds after years and suffer complications.....plus the horror stories of those who have suffered the worst and even died...but thanks man
Try and research supplements for lowering blood sugar. There are blood sugar support supplements that help, helped my hubby. Also cinnamon. Heard Jarrow is a very good brand.
The thing with fruit is we've bred fruits to contain more and more sugars and they bare no resemblance to the fruit we ate in the past which was much sharper
Last fall my apple trees were full of apples, so I started filling up on apples instead of sugary snacks. As a result, I lost weight and felt better. Store bought apples don’t have that same effect.
I needed to watch this to continue to reaffirm myself to make efforts to get myself off sugar. I am at my healthiest need to maintain this attitude for at least 3 yrs to make it a habit and lifestyle. Good luck to anyone out there working on their health x
Trying to avoid ultra-processed foods, as well as foods high in sugar. Would be great if more food companies reformulate their products to be more metabolically healthy.
I guess the reason they don't do that is because people wouldn't buy their products - we need to change our behaviours first and then the industry will react to what the consumers want. If we all stopped buying UPFs, they wouldn't make them any more! This ties in with the generational shift he's talking about - will not happen overnight!
The industry is starting to wake up. The guidelines need to be thrown away. Then the companies can start to get back to old ways of making things. That die on a shelf in a week. Rather than survive for a year, like a twinkie. Keto movement is pushing this a good bit. Soda companies discuss this and it's impact on sales. Sales are way down and i'm glad. Some day we'll get lard cookies again or butter. Or lard fried donuts. Or water crust pot pies in the frozen section with no trans fats ever again. I pray. In the mean time i'll just make them at home. The saturated fat needs to be taking off off the naughty list.
The part on stress is very interesting. 40:00 to 42:30 the doctor states that if you’re under stress and your cortisol is high, your amygdala is out of control. We live in a society of extremely high stress, no wonder all of us are walking around overweight or obese.
@@TheFeelyourself Take a stress tab. It’s a supplement of B vitamins, C, magnesium, calcium. It works. Take a multi for every day and a stress tab at stressful times.
I’ve ALWAYS said the fatter I am is a direct sign of how unhappy and stressed I am. Some people seem to lose weight and appetite and can’t eat when stressed. It’s always been the opposite for me.
This is a huge concern for me as I have people to support, and in order to earn enough money, I must subject myself to a lot of sustained stress. I was laid off several months ago, have some money saved, so took some time off. I'm trying to cut my sugar and carb addictions out before I go back to work but a big part of it is stress eating. And they only thing I know is to eliminate the stress. But how do I do that and make the income I need?
After listening to another interview of Dr. Lustig on sugar, I stopped drinking sodas, and I have avoided eating all types of sweets. I did it for about a week and I realized I have more energy and I don't snack anymore in between meals. And If I get hungry, I eat like 10 pistachios, and I am good until the next meal. I work at a hospital, and the cafeteria is filled with sweets and ultra processed food. Now when I go for water even though the sweets are attractive I don't have the urge to buy them, even though I usually used to cave in. After like a week, I went on a trip, and I ate a gyro at Arby's, which it just didn't taste the same! And it sat very bad, I indulged a bit this past weekend and I just didn't feel well. I am going to continue to see how I feel in a month from now and see if I lose weight. I definitely have more energy and I feel less bloated

Had tremendous food and carb cravings for a number of days after my husband’s recent birthday weekend. I naturally had eaten lots of carbs and sugar unlike my normal diet. Crazy addictive!
So if you had steak or lobster or pizza during the birthday weekend...and you wanted to eat it again because you were reminded of how much you like these foods...that would mean they are crazy addictive, too?
@@pookiecatblue I know what she means. The combo of sugar and carb does kick off something in the body where you want to indulge. I learned this with keto and it is what prevents me from indulging in the first bite of say cake or donut with my coffee because I will lose that stable satiety feeling and want to have more.
Sometimes being offered something is harder than going out of your own way to not eat something. You just need to tell yourself, the things they are eating do not belong in my mouth, my digestive system. They are eating poison, I don't want poison.
I was blown away by how quickly weight drops off when you quit sugar. I have never been a heavy person, quite slim, but the first time I quit sugar, I freaked out! Dropped a size in clothes within days and went straight back on the sugar. I'm off it again now and am just dealing with the weight loss. It's just so amazing! Size 9 to size 6 in a week! A week maximum! I don't actually want to be this small, but I'm actually toned as now despite all the meat and fat I eat, so i guess this is just my actual size. I'm hoping the newly developed psoriasis will also disappear. The itch etc has gone, but apparently the actual rash takes months to go away. I am LOVING not having the sugar cravings. Have been trying for years and I don't think I've ever made more than two days off it, so in a way psoriasis has been a blessing! I just hope like hell it goes away and never returns.
@@CK-ho7zfit’s likely that her body was carrying a lot of water weight since an excessive sugar diet can cause someone to store 5-15 pounds of water which looks like bloating in the face, stomach for example. that can be noticeable and effect how clothes fit.
I stopped drinking mountain a year ago . Im 30 and drank it my whole life. I was always 155 5foot 11 slim guy. I was gaining weight and was at 199. I stopped soda. Just soda and 30 pounds came off fast than i could blink. Im now 166 and stable. I eat sugar once in awhile but not like i used to. My body/gut went through a crazy transition when i stopped drinking it.
It's definitely hard to quit sugar, but it's possible with persistence and self-control. I've found my food to taste better without sugar. Anything above a teaspoon of sugar seems to overwhelm the flavors. Not to say some dishes don't benefit from some added sweetness, but most are better without. For example, homemade chili, spaghetti sauce, oatmeal, korma, and teriyaki sauce to name a few. It's lovely to read everyone else's experiences and changes they've made for their health. I don’t care if I ever have sugar but I love love love bread, pasta and potato. Basically sugar in another form. Whole wheat bread and pasta does add some fibre. Potato does have some vitamins. I need to have more non starchy vegetables and get off the carbs.
I've never used much sugar, a little in coffee and also hitting chocolate at times, although only the dark bitter type. Now none of it for 2 years. People though shouldn't have any delusions about getting over the effects of it and in my view it takes years to overcome these. Like any of these things you just have to make a lifelong change. Self awareness changes everything.

It’s so easy to realise how much extra sugar we’re getting; once you cook whole foods without any *added* sugar then you barely consume any. But once you add soda, fruit juice, snacks, sauces and so on its well over 50-100g per day!
Now that I look at labels I realize it’s in everything, if not sugar under another name. When I realized ketchup which I love is nothing but sugar I realized I can only eat whole real food if I want to keep my health.
I finally was able to stop eating and drinking sugar , been 5 weeks now and my health as improved drastically..thank you for giving me the inspiration to do this
I have been listening to Dr. Lustig and several others on these diet issues for two years and have greatly benefited from the discussions. He is authentic. We have changed considerably for the better. We are eating lot less processed foods and lots more unprocessed foods. Vegan vegetarian pescatarian or flexaterian as long as we stay away from sugar and processed foods we can do better.
I didn't quit sugar but I limited it as much as possible. Started 2 months ago. Something like 10 grams a few days a week. It's not perfect but the results are HUGE! My face and limbs are not puffy anymore, I sleep much better, have much more energy, my skin is almost perfect, cravings are almost gone. Minus 5 cm in waist!
Noticeable weight loss ( after 2/52) when cutting out sugars, processed foods , combined with recommended portion sizing & balanced nutrition. Returning to a healthy eating plan is a must to maximise health & wellbeing. Cravings gone after 2/52 of breaking habit forming behaviours. Learned so much in this interview. The rates of dental and metabolic diseases in children are alarming. If parents feed them sugar and junk early on, they'll get used to it and beyond the health complication, it'll be harder to get off this stuff later in life.
I'm turning things around and my 12yr old has no desire to change. It's my fault that he has a horribly unhealthy diet. I am struggling to figure out how to handle getting him to change.
@@aboomalacani2732 The fact alone that you acknowledge your mistakes and try to fix them is commendable. Obviously it won't be easy if they're used to or even addicted to this stuff, maybe you can try by restricting the frequency of eating the stuff before cutting them out entirely, or let him have it as a treat every once in a while. Or you could try to explain him the long term effects of eating lots of that stuff by showing him the evidence, maybe improve the diet entirely by introducing more filling foods so the desire to eat these processed things vanishes, replacing it with moderate amounts of fruit etc. I don't have a kid so i can't speak out of experience, but these are the things that came to my mind rn. I'm sure you guys got this.

The change will be allowed when the saturated fats are not the enemy anymore. Take the seed oils out of the desserts. Load them up with saturated fats. The discussion on low fat jacked up the sugar. Lower the sugar and jack up the butter, suet and tallow. Watching great british bake show with the water crust or other pastry soaked in beef, pork or chicken fat is so cool. They were pretty healthy back then. In relative terms. Smoking and alcohol was their drug of choice. I've substituted all the recipes to add in butter and eggs. My health is better for it. My kids are trim/healthy/not obese. And have their fill of good sweets not fake/process/fat free things. If they get candy from sugar, they come home and throw it away or don't take it in the first place. I'll make some cookies, cheesecake or scones loaded with butter/eggs/fiber. Some whole wheat flour in it. They eat way less sweet things when they have their hunger turned off. Take croissants for instance. around 30-40% saturated fat. Good luck eating 10 of those. Vs 10 donuts. Every talk of Lustig presents something new. Thanks again for all of your real work with real/simple results we can put into place at home.

I’ve been adding 3-4 table spoons of sugar per coffee cup for over 50 yrs with zero health issues and I’m not overweight. I drink 6-8 cups of coffee a day. I exercise several days a week and are not diabetic. I do eat low carbs daily….usually under 100g a day.
Lustig by name and lustig by nature, I think. This was an absolutely riveting podcast, thank you so much for sharing it with us. I love that this man is so passionate about what he does and what he believes. I think we're in an obesity crisis and in the same way people are ignoring climate change they're ignoring the sugar problem. We need to make some radical changes in the way we live.
Climate change and Sugar overload in diets are two completely different aspects of life.....one is toxic and extremely damaging to metabolic health and the other is BS.....I will let you figure which is which.
Wonderful video. The guy has all the answers. I stopped eating sugar and refined carbs in may. I still eat good bread. I cut back on processed foods. I am always satiated now and lost over 2 stone in 5 months by doing nothing exceot tge above.

Not only have I cut out sugar but also salt and fat from my diet and I feel incredible, the headaches are gone, lethargy and tiredness all gone. I feel light and all of my blood tests are fantastic. Processed food is not food!
How do you keep weight. My challenge is I’m already slim 124lbs 5’5. I don’t want to be smaller. I already eat clean as in no white anything, no bread, no processed sugar. I only drink real juice I made from fruits, no added sugar and tea with little sugar, cane sugar. but I’ll I stopped even flour because sugar is added, I’ve stopped rice completely. Replaced with grains like quinoa. I don’t consume dairy. I’m afraid I’ll get slimed and wither away. I only eat liver, eggs, and seafood (that’s for the nutritional reasons). Otherwise it’s mainly as natural as I can get. I live on an island
I had to ween myself off sugar it was so bad. I felt like a hypoglycemic. Luckily, I'm to the point we're I'm at keto bread and organic almond butter. So today, I'll try to cut processed foods completely out. This is day 6 of no processed sugar. No juice junk food etc. The reason I'm sharing this is because it can seem very overwhelming to up and quit. I'm no dietitian but HOW I DID IT was I did one meal a day with whatever I wanted. So I got my body use to going durations without sugar. Then instead of my normal diet of pizza, ice cream, etc, I just replaced ice cream with fruit as my sweet thing and pizza with salads adding meat to it, mushrooms, turkey, extra virgin olive oil. So day one the only processed foods I had was keto bread and organic no sugar added peanut butter. I also had pistachios pecans for high healthy fats. I added a tbs of extra virgin olive oil to my salmon can. By the third day I felt completely better. Now all that remains is to remove the keto bread happening today and the organic peanut butter and almond butter and replace it with almonds, pecans, and pistachios, walnuts. After my body needs no processed food on OMAD, I'll do a 3 day fast 2 times a month for detox.
It's been 2 months as of today of a no sugar (actually 30g or less of carbs a day)... down 60lbs and running 4-5 miles a day. Feel like a million bucks.
Its amazing how good the food industry is at fighting this knowledge to get out. Even today, with so many people finding out, you can tell that the food industry is doing everything they can to limit the reach of this knowledge. Cutting out sugar has almost immediately made my arthritis go away. I was in sever pain and im only in my early 30's.
I have kept my sugar intake low for my entire life. Still, I wonder if its dangers are overblown. Carbs are carbs and sugar is not even the highest on the glycemic index. I think it only has become a problem because of our sedentary lifestyle. Carbs are our primary source of energy, and only unhealthy when excess is not burnt off. I doubt if a candy bar before or after a marathon will do any harm. Nor a little something sweet do any harm for anybody who is at all active. Even something like housework probably will be enough to keep glycogen stores from topping off in the muscles and liver. And that is probably the main thing.
@@johncronin5311 No added sugar or desserts for 40 years. And I have never craved sugar. In fact, added sugar makes me nauseous. I still try to keep a balance of carbs, protein, and healthy fats. In fact, I can't imagine keeping my caloric intake where I need it without my brown rice, beans, legumes, and whole grains. One gets sick and tired of a diet of avocadoes, salmon, and chicken breasts.
I was allergy tested & found out that I am allergic to sugar 15 months ago. I do not like eating anymore. I eat when my stomach growls to shut it up. There is sugar in almost everything & going to the grocery store is so hard now.
there is no added sugar in whole foods - foods without labels. I started so many years ago with the original Atkins low carb diet - the first 2 weeks required zero sugar. I now am very happy eating 95% carnivore, a smattering of plants for seasonings
Im on day 2 of no sugar or refined carbs and carbs. Withdrawal is difficult. But determined to get better.. eating low carb high protein low fat diet from a bariatric doctor.

I wouldn’t do carnivore too long. You do need vitamins and minerals of the kind found in plants. But for awhile carnivore is ok as yeast will die off and you will get a better microbiome in your colon which affects your entire body.
@@Dustandfuzz Could be. I'm learning as I go. Thankfully I don't have any autoimmune diseases or anything so I'm probably good to reintroduce some plants at some point. However, it is worth mentioning that there are some people who have been carnivore for many years--some decades--so it definitely seems possible that meat can be enough to sustain for a lifetime. My young and open minded doctor listens. Got him a copy of Dr.Lustig's book _Metabolical_ . He found it fascinating and educational. He better understands my keto and IF lifestyle now also.
Dr Lustig is amazing. I love the way he points his points across. Pretty direct and you can't mess with it! I do have a sugar addiction which isn't half as bad as it used to be bit still there and working on it. Usually only comes out when I'm tired and stressed.
Thanks to this guy - I no longer see Halloween Candy the same way. I see Halloween as an opportunity to hook kids into brands of candy. And then Christmas - then finally Easter. All big chocolate 🍫 celebrations. Thank goodness it’s expensive because that’s a big deterrent. And I always break out with milk chocolate- always. Even in my 60’s. There’s already so much added sugar to everything for taste. Finally Heinz has a sugar free ketchup. But, now they use sucralose As long as the gut bacteria isn’t affected- it may be a better move.
As the doctor floated in and out of the "zone" for the microphone and also ramped up and down his voice without regard to the proximity of the microphone, the resultant audio is all over the place. Hope you get better audio next time. A well-positioned boom or lapel mic might be better. Hope that helps. I'm skipping out on this one. Does it make any difference when you take honey? I mean, I only have 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey on my bread with butter. I don't take sugar in my coffee or tea. Since honey is a natural product, I thought itcould be healthier.....
Honey has some benefits but is processed in your body as a sugar. If wanting to quit sugar totally, no honey I'm afraid. Besides, if it's store-bought honey, it's not honey for sure.
diabetic association is getting its money (mainly from food and farma industry) for producing diabetics. As well diabetics (more is better) are crucial for their own existence. Checking fasting insulin is cutting the branch all of them are sitting on.
3 years. 3 years i have avoided every sugar base products that I usually consume and I went from 178 to 145 lbs. I usually sleep 9 hours and weekdays would be 12 hours now I sleep max 7 hours and I exercise 2x in day, eat once and work w/o feeling fatigue during the day. Best decision of my life.
I seem to sleep BETTER and more soundly while eating sugar and I wake up with a raging boner, so sugar does have some benefits
I’m 3 years refined sugar and artificial sweetener free this November. I suffered with Ankylosing spondylitis for most my life but in the last 2 years the pain and inflammation is nothing like it used to be!

I have given up sugar and processed foods because food has taken over my life since the age of 4. I am 56 now and overweight weighing nearly 200 in January. I have reduced my weight to 171 and still going down. But the best part is the cravings and binge eating have stopped. My mood is so much better and no body pain. Sugar was and is a drug that for me was very toxic.

I stopped sweets in January. Afterwards, I consumed about 1 sweet per week instead of 2-3 per day. I lost a dress size in 6 months.
After listening to Dr. Casey Means' interview on Tucker Carlson, I have decided to stop ultra-processed foods and I'm going to cut back even more on the sweets and just save them for holidays.
The first 3 weeks without were very hard, NGL. But after that, my cravings dropped dramatically and I could look at sweets in the grocery story and not want any. The only thing I still craved was ice cream and cola when I got hot. Now that we're about to go into fall and cool down, that craving should go away and I should be home free. By the time next summer rolls around, I shouldn't want it at all anymore. (It's already to the point that when I do have ice cream, I often don't like it because it's too sweet. At best, I enjoy about half of the smallest size you can order. No more large orders or a whole sleeve of cookies or a 5 pack of fun size candy bars.)

Absolutely. Sugar triggers spikes insulin levels which triggers fat storage AND stimulates cell division. Any nascent stray cancer cells will start to divide and obviously this is what we don't want.

Been on Carnivore Diet since July this year. I was on Keto for two weeks then transitioned to Carnivore. First three days of Keto is not that horrible for me, sugar cravings are there but I kept on thinking about me being hooked in a Dialysis machine or taking insulin when I get older so that helped a lot for me.
Makes sense. The food industry puts sugar in everything because it is subsidized by the government, so it is WAY easier to relapse because you can't get it out of your environment without enormous effort, Whereas the same cannot be said for alcohol/drugs.
Because we've been surrounded by sugar all our lives, it is difficult to have the appropriate emotional response to how evil our food industry and the state are for doing this to us. Imagine how the response from people would change if they had put alcohol in everything and gave it to children so they are addicted for life. One is viewed as normal, whereas the other is horrifying, even though they are the same idea in terms of ethics.

Three sisters who smoked and drank alcohol excessively died at 46, 64 & 65.
Genes are only 20% of who we are. My 85 year old sister who doesn't smoke or drink alcohol just started her Spring cleaning.😂

Another thing to keep in mind when listening to Dr. Lustig is that he is from Brooklyn and got his bachelor’s degree in nutrtional biochemistry from MIT. So if you’re wrong, he is going to let you know it 12 ways from noon. He is a scientist’s scientist. More power to him.

Over the past two years I thought I came off sugar. It was a response to my pancreas and liver being messed up due to visceral fat caused by consuming too much sugar over the years, namely Cola. I did lose weight, but i found myself returning to a bit of chocolate here and there. Why so? When i really started checking, sugar is found in pretty much everything. Even when i was informed that i should opt for black bread as a healthier option, i discovered many brands contained sugar but under a different term.
Now i have gone cold turkey. 3 weeks ago i cut out everything. I only eat meat, vegetables, berries and some fruit for fiber. I know I've cut out sugar totally because the effects are now different. It was never this hard before. The symptoms: feeling like I'm depressed, no desire for anything, want to stay in bed, moody, lack of energy. I do feel I'm getting better: I've lost weight, i can fall asleep without melatonin (having some chocolate before would make me sleep badly and give me restless leg syndrome at night). I do have less brain fog, my taste buds are more effective, i pass MUCH MORE liquid i.e. less water retention.
I was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, high levels of insulin, basically pre-diabetic. A lot of that has been reversed but i need another week or so to come out of feeling crap. I also have this feeling of wanting something sweet but know I'd punish myself if i did.
It really is insane what sugar does to us. I'd also add that people might think they've totally cut sugar out but still consume some products unknowingly that contain it.

I've learned to cut down dramatically on sugar. The odd thing is that as you cut out sweet foods, everything starts to taste sweeter. Apples are now too sickly sweet for me; tomatoes (garden, not shop) taste decently sweet. When I walk through the supermarket and walk past cereals and biscuits, my stomach churns just looking at it. The bread aisle here in USA smells disgusting, like a nasty caramel smell. I still like real bread, although now I eat it only as a rare treat, but the added sugar bread is just revolting to me now. Garden green beans and zucchini taste sweet to me now. So dont think your food will taste bad if you cut out most sugar. Your taste buds will adapt and you'll get the same pleasure, just at much lower levels of sugar. I would love to drink cola occasionally, but its way too sweet - I wish someone would make a cola with just 25% of the sugar, and I dont mean by adding sweeteners or allulose. So on the rare occasion I drink cola now, I dilute it heavily with soda water. Not the same because all the other flavors dilute also. So its important to be aware that if you drastically cut down on sugars (and possibly carbs, I cut out most of those too), your taste becomes much more sensitive, and your food tastes much better. Fruit and veg in particular.

I agree even milk in coffee tasts too sweet to me now. I now have it black no milk or sugar. It tastes so much better.

@@Sweetie8387 If you can, grow some of your own vegetables. Not only will you treasure eating them more, because you grew them, but in many cases, getting the veg from the garden to your plate as fast as possible makes a massive difference. Asparagus, sweetcorn and peas all seem to have much better taste the faster you can cook them from harvest - in part, because sugars convert to starch.
Also, the mineral density should be higher.
Adding a fat like butter or olive oil also helps.
I was a chronic-bingeing sugarholic. Some days I’d eat a dozen donuts a morning. Other times I’d eat a 40oz bag of skittles in 5-7 days. I had a terrible addiction. I quit cold turkey on Feb. 10th, 2018. I would pass by a sweet snack and would involuntarily reach for it. I would get this surreal feeling kind of like being somewhere that you shouldn’t be. It took a long time to break that feeling. Now, I have 1 cheat day every year. I eat my birthday cake.

I have decided to go on Whole30 for the month of Jan. 2024. I was hooked on sugar, and my hormones have been out of whack these past couple of months. I am allowed no added sugar, no processed food, no dairy, no fried food, no caffeine. My skin is already clearing up. My energy is not high, yet. But it is getting better every day. I will be buying more sea moss gel to take daily. My digestive system is still getting used to this, but it is also improving. I mostly cook at home so I know what’s going into my food. I have found some fantastic recipes for Whole30 so excited for this journey.
I quit red meat & pork, caffeine,sugar, & processed foods only 8 days ago & already my psoriasis is almost gone, brain fog gone and all my aches & pains are gone. I'm never going back! And I lost 8 pounds so far- just water so far but feeling great!

I stopped drinking Store bought Orange juice for breakfast because of the 25 to 30 grams of sugar in a serving size.

A first-time listener here, and I've only listened to the first half of the podcast, but I absolutely agree with Dr. Lustig. Growing up, my stepfather was a baker and my mother baked cakes, pies, and other goodies throughout the year. We were all sugar addicts. Every time I wean myself off of it, I am less sluggish, tired, achy, and lose belly fat (along with exercise). Inevitably, I return slowly back to desserts. I tell myself, oh just one little piece. After listening to Dr. Lutig, I got up and threw away the cookies I bought yesterday. Now, I'm beginning to dry out again.

I m going on 3 weeks of no process sugar and my friends and family tell me I don’t need to cut sugar out because I’m thin. But in doing it because inflammation in my joints and bad memory. I feel so much better and I actually have more energy and I’m never hungry because I eat fruit and Whole Foods!

Absolutely top talk. I’m subscribing to this channel. Please hurry and spread this to all UK GPs. My gp laughed at me for going ketovore. However, my bp, which has been high for 35 years, is down 20 points, was 140/95. Now 120/75. A1c down from 38 to 30( UK measurement)That’s all in 8 months. Even my cataract has started to clear.
Update. 4 weeks after first post. Eye exam yesterday at the clinic, not the opticians. Cataract gone! I am truly amazed. Could the sugar in my old diet have caused it?

Because you dont have to go keto, if you eat marginally processed carbs like wholegrain bread or cooked potatoes you'll be right as rain. Its the cookies and deep frost pizza that kills you. Thats why a gp would laugh i guess

I'm telling mine. I even told the doctor who diagnosed my diabetes that I hope from now on she suggests diet before drugs. She wanted me on metformin and a statin as well as seeing a dietician. I told her that you only make one change at a time and I decided to try low carb and it worked. I did see a dietician and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs. I decided to stick with what I was doing and emailed her the results of my follow up test. @@kenadams5504
I'm doing a Carnivore diet and have cut out all sugars the best I can. No bread or grains. I've dropped from 310 pounds to 250 pounds and want to get down to 160. That's what I should weigh for my height. I'm 5' 4" and will be 64 on the 24th this month.
There is no "should weigh for my height". Everyone's ability to tolerate fat is different. Some obese people are healthy, some thin people are sick. Also, the curves have been shifted as he describes for biomarkers. So basically get to the weight you need to be to be healthy, and stay there. Whatever that weight is. Go by the test results, not the scales.

Could be sedentary lifestyle, older age, possibly underlying health issues, not practicing what he preaches. Could be a few reasons.
Except the Australian paradox where consumption of sugar and refined carbs decreased by 20% but obesity still increased by 300% in the same time frame.
Just let me say that I loved this podcast. Nothing is more refreshing than to listen to an informed discussion by two accomplished professionals with good delivery skills. I only disagree with one thing you said and that is that it is impossible to enjoy unsweetened chocolate. I eat unsweetened chocolate every single morning. Once I became used to it, I have acquired a taste for it. I liken this to people who drink black coffee as opposed to coffee laden with dairy products and sugar. People expect chocolate to be sweetened but it’s absolutely unnecessary to do so. I so believe in the nutritional benefits of cacao that I am starting to learn savory recipes using it.
I have returned to coffee in the morning over tea to reduce sugar. I put a pint of milk in my several cups of tea and don’t like half and half in tea. I found coffee to be bitter so thought about putting unsweetened cocoa powder in my coffee. It worked! Now the coffee is no longer bitter.
I'm always amazed how dr Lustig is able to pull very specific information and data out of the bag without relying on any notes during these unscripted conversations. It sounds like he really knows what he's talking about, which is why I tend to believe him.

He mentioned that in one of his other podcasts. Not everyone consumes alcohol, but pretty much everyone consumes sugar, that's why sugar is the focus and rightfully so.
Took me about 6 months to get off sugar. I used low sugar high cacao dark chocolate. 1 oz a day. Just 3 grams of sugar and I don't have cravings. Even for the dark chocolate. I don't do keto or carnivore. I just took out ultra processed foods/carbs.

Sugar is addictive but giving it up by changing to a low carb diet is very easy and you do not miss it ever, just start your low carb diet in the morning and avoid sugar and you will never miss it or crave it ever again.

The best I have felt in my adult life is when I got off of added sugar. Every aspect of my health and life became better. Lost weight, had more energy, was happier, joints stopped hurting, skin was better, it was amazing! Then I made the mistake of thinking I could have a "treat" now and then. I'm right there with you. I quit sugar in June, and the withdrawal was hell, but I gutted through it. It takes an iron will to stay away, but I do one day (or hour) at a time. It's worth it...Good luck to you- be strong!

I gave up sugar 6 months ago and my chronic insomnia went away immediately. I gave up wheat 5years ago and my chronic hemorrhoids went away in 2 days. All grains give me skin issues.
4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!

Try and research supplements for lowering blood sugar. There are blood sugar support supplements that help, helped my hubby. Also cinnamon. Heard Jarrow is a very good brand.
The thing with fruit is we've bred fruits to contain more and more sugars and they bare no resemblance to the fruit we ate in the past which was much sharper
Last fall my apple trees were full of apples, so I started filling up on apples instead of sugary snacks. As a result, I lost weight and felt better. Store bought apples don’t have that same effect.

Trying to avoid ultra-processed foods, as well as foods high in sugar. Would be great if more food companies reformulate their products to be more metabolically healthy.
I guess the reason they don't do that is because people wouldn't buy their products - we need to change our behaviours first and then the industry will react to what the consumers want. If we all stopped buying UPFs, they wouldn't make them any more! This ties in with the generational shift he's talking about - will not happen overnight!

The industry is starting to wake up. The guidelines need to be thrown away. Then the companies can start to get back to old ways of making things. That die on a shelf in a week. Rather than survive for a year, like a twinkie.
Keto movement is pushing this a good bit. Soda companies discuss this and it's impact on sales. Sales are way down and i'm glad.

The part on stress is very interesting. 40:00 to 42:30 the doctor states that if you’re under stress and your cortisol is high, your amygdala is out of control. We live in a society of extremely high stress, no wonder all of us are walking around overweight or obese.

I’ve ALWAYS said the fatter I am is a direct sign of how unhappy and stressed I am. Some people seem to lose weight and appetite and can’t eat when stressed. It’s always been the opposite for me.
This is a huge concern for me as I have people to support, and in order to earn enough money, I must subject myself to a lot of sustained stress. After listening to another interview of Dr. Lustig on sugar, I stopped drinking sodas, and I have avoided eating all types of sweets. I did it for about a week and I realized I have more energy and I don't snack anymore in between meals. And If I get hungry, I eat like 10 pistachios, and I am good until the next meal. I work at a hospital, and the cafeteria is filled with sweets and ultra processed food. Now when I go for water even though the sweets are attractive I don't have the urge to buy them, even though I usually used to cave in.
After like a week, I went on a trip, and I ate a gyro at Arby's, which it just didn't taste the same! And it sat very bad, I indulged a bit this past weekend and I just didn't feel well.
I am going to continue to see how I feel in a month from now and see if I lose weight. I definitely have more energy and I feel less bloated

I learned this with keto and it is what prevents me from indulging in the first bite of say cake or donut with my coffee because I will lose that stable satiety feeling and want to have more.

I was blown away by how quickly weight drops off when you quit sugar. I have never been a heavy person, quite slim, but the first time I quit sugar, I freaked out! Dropped a size in clothes within days and went straight back on the sugar. I'm off it again now and am just dealing with the weight loss. It's just so amazing! Size 9 to size 6 in a week! A week maximum! I don't actually want to be this small, but I'm actually toned as now despite all the meat and fat I eat, so i guess this is just my actual size. I'm hoping the newly developed psoriasis will also disappear. The itch etc has gone, but apparently the actual rash takes months to go away. I am LOVING not having the sugar cravings. Have been trying for years and I don't think I've ever made more than two days off it, so in a way psoriasis has been a blessing! I just hope like hell it goes away and never returns.

I stopped drinking mountain a year ago . Im 30 and drank it my whole life. I was always 155 5foot 11 slim guy. I was gaining weight and was at 199. I stopped soda. Just soda and 30 pounds came off fast than i could blink. Im now 166 and stable. I eat sugar once in awhile but not like i used to. My body/gut went through a crazy transition when i stopped drinking it.
It's definitely hard to quit sugar, but it's possible with persistence and self-control. I've found my food to taste better without sugar. Anything above a teaspoon of sugar seems to overwhelm the flavors. Not to say some dishes don't benefit from some added sweetness, but most are better without. For example, homemade chili, spaghetti sauce, oatmeal, korma, and teriyaki sauce to name a few.

I don’t care if I ever have sugar but I love love love bread, pasta and potato. Basically sugar in another form. Whole wheat bread and pasta does add some fibre. Potato does have some vitamins. I need to have more non starchy vegetables and get off the carbs.
I've never used much sugar, a little in coffee and also hitting chocolate at times, although only the dark bitter type. Now none of it for 2 years. People though shouldn't have any delusions about getting over the effects of it and in my view it takes years to overcome these. Like any of these things you just have to make a lifelong change. Self awareness changes everything.

It’s so easy to realise how much extra sugar we’re getting; once you cook whole foods without any *added* sugar then you barely consume any. But once you add soda, fruit juice, snacks, sauces and so on its well over 50-100g per day!
Now that I look at labels I realize it’s in everything, if not sugar under another name. When I realized ketchup which I love is nothing but sugar I realized I can only eat whole real food if I want to keep my health.
Even vegetables contain fructose, so you're going to naturally eat some sugar, but at least it isn't added.

I didn't quit sugar but I limited it as much as possible. Started 2 months ago. Something like 10 grams a few days a week. It's not perfect but the results are HUGE! My face and limbs are not puffy anymore, I sleep much better, have much more energy, my skin is almost perfect, cravings are almost gone. Minus 5 cm in waist!
Anger and short temper are signs of liver damage.
Noticeable weight loss ( after 2/52) when cutting out sugars, processed foods , combined with recommended portion sizing & balanced nutrition.
Returning to a healthy eating
plan is a must to maximise health & wellbeing.
Cravings gone after 2/52 of breaking habit forming behaviours.

Learned so much in this interview. The rates of dental and metabolic diseases in children are alarming. If parents feed them sugar and junk early on, they'll get used to it and beyond the health complication, it'll be harder to get off this stuff later in life.
I'm turning things around and my 12yr old has no desire to change. It's my fault that he has a horribly unhealthy diet. I am struggling to figure out how to handle getting him to change.
@@aboomalacani2732 The fact alone that you acknowledge your mistakes and try to fix them is commendable. Obviously it won't be easy if they're used to or even addicted to this stuff, maybe you can try by restricting the frequency of eating the stuff before cutting them out entirely, or let him have it as a treat every once in a while. Or you could try to explain him the long term effects of eating lots of that stuff by showing him the evidence, maybe improve the diet entirely by introducing more filling foods so the desire to eat these processed things vanishes, replacing it with moderate amounts of fruit etc. I don't have a kid so i can't speak out of experience, but these are the things that came to my mind rn. I'm sure you guys got this.

The change will be allowed when the saturated fats are not the enemy anymore. Take the seed oils out of the desserts. Load them up with saturated fats. The discussion on low fat jacked up the sugar. Lower the sugar and jack up the butter, suet and tallow. Watching great british bake show with the water crust or other pastry soaked in beef, pork or chicken fat is so cool. They were pretty healthy back then. In relative terms. Smoking and alcohol was their drug of choice. I've substituted all the recipes to add in butter and eggs. My health is better for it. My kids are trim/healthy/not obese. And have their fill of good sweets not fake/process/fat free things. If they get candy from sugar, they come home and throw it away or don't take it in the first place. I'll make some cookies, cheesecake or scones loaded with butter/eggs/fiber. Some whole wheat flour in it. They eat way less sweet things when they have their hunger turned off.
Take croissants for instance. around 30-40% saturated fat. Good luck eating 10 of those. Vs 10 donuts.

I’ve been adding 3-4 table spoons of sugar per coffee cup for over 50 yrs with zero health issues and I’m not overweight. I drink 6-8 cups of coffee a day. I exercise several days a week and are not diabetic. I do eat low carbs daily….usually under 100g a day.

I think we're in an obesity crisis and in the same way people are ignoring climate change they're ignoring the sugar problem. We need to make some radical changes in the way we live.

Not only have I cut out sugar but also salt and fat from my diet and I feel incredible, the headaches are gone, lethargy and tiredness all gone. I feel light and all of my blood tests are fantastic. Processed food is not food!
How do you keep weight. My challenge is I’m already slim 124lbs 5’5. I don’t want to be smaller. I already eat clean as in no white anything, no bread, no processed sugar. I only drink real juice I made from fruits, no added sugar and tea with little sugar, cane sugar. but I’ll I stopped even flour because sugar is added, I’ve stopped rice completely. Replaced with grains like quinoa. I don’t consume dairy. I’m afraid I’ll get slimed and wither away. I only eat liver, eggs, and seafood (that’s for the nutritional reasons). Otherwise it’s mainly as natural as I can get. I live on an island

I had to ween myself off sugar it was so bad. I felt like a hypoglycemic. Luckily, I'm to the point we're I'm at keto bread and organic almond butter. So today, I'll try to cut processed foods completely out. This is day 6 of no processed sugar. No juice junk food etc.
The reason I'm sharing this is because it can seem very overwhelming to up and quit. I'm no dietitian but HOW I DID IT was I did one meal a day with whatever I wanted. So I got my body use to going durations without sugar.
Then instead of my normal diet of pizza, ice cream, etc, I just replaced ice cream with fruit as my sweet thing and pizza with salads adding meat to it, mushrooms, turkey, extra virgin olive oil. So day one the only processed foods I had was keto bread and organic no sugar added peanut butter. I also had pistachios pecans for high healthy fats. I added a tbs of extra virgin olive oil to my salmon can.
By the third day I felt completely better.
Now all that remains is to remove the keto bread happening today and the organic peanut butter and almond butter and replace it with almonds, pecans, and pistachios, walnuts.
After my body needs no processed food on OMAD, I'll do a 3 day fast 2 times a month for detox.

It's been 2 months as of today of a no sugar (actually 30g or less of carbs a day)... down 60lbs and running 4-5 miles a day. Feel like a million bucks.
Its amazing how good the food industry is at fighting this knowledge to get out. Even today, with so many people finding out, you can tell that the food industry is doing everything they can to limit the reach of this knowledge. Cutting out sugar has almost immediately made my arthritis go away. I was in sever pain and im only in my early 30's.

I have kept my sugar intake low for my entire life. Still, I wonder if its dangers are overblown. Carbs are carbs and sugar is not even the highest on the glycemic index. I think it only has become a problem because of our sedentary lifestyle. Carbs are our primary source of energy, and only unhealthy when excess is not burnt off. I doubt if a candy bar before or after a marathon will do any harm. Nor a little something sweet do any harm for anybody who is at all active. Even something like housework probably will be enough to keep glycogen stores from topping off in the muscles and liver. And that is probably the main thing.
Definitely need carbs as a woman and insomnia will set in if carbs are too low.

@@johncronin5311 No added sugar or desserts for 40 years. And I have never craved sugar. In fact, added sugar makes me nauseous. I still try to keep a balance of carbs, protein, and healthy fats. In fact, I can't imagine keeping my caloric intake where I need it without my brown rice, beans, legumes, and whole grains. One gets sick and tired of a diet of avocadoes, salmon, and chicken breasts.

I was allergy tested & found out that I am allergic to sugar 15 months ago. I do not like eating anymore. I eat when my stomach growls to shut it up. There is sugar in almost everything & going to the grocery store is so hard now.
I did not know people could be allergic to sugar! What were your symptoms? Rash, hives, upset stomach??
there is no added sugar in whole foods - foods without labels. I started so many years ago with the original Atkins low carb diet - the first 2 weeks required zero sugar. I now am very happy eating 95% carnivore, a smattering of plants for seasonings

Im on day 2 of no sugar or refined carbs and carbs. Withdrawal is difficult. But determined to get better.. eating low carb high protein low fat diet from a bariatric doctor.
Eating natural fruits will counter the cravings.
The biggest way to make a change stop bringing home bad foods. Buy real food and only bring real food home.

I wouldn’t do carnivore too long. You do need vitamins and minerals of the kind found in plants. But for awhile carnivore is ok as yeast will die off and you will get a better microbiome in your colon which affects your entire body.
@@Dustandfuzz Could be. I'm learning as I go. Thankfully I don't have any autoimmune diseases or anything so I'm probably good to reintroduce some plants at some point. However, it is worth mentioning that there are some people who have been carnivore for many years--some decades--so it definitely seems possible that meat can be enough to sustain for a lifetime.

Dr Lustig is amazing. I love the way he points his points across. Pretty direct and you can't mess with it! I do have a sugar addiction which isn't half as bad as it used to be bit still there and working on it. Usually only comes out when I'm tired and stressed.
I just don't get addiction. I do and live self-control. Moderation with all things in life is key.
Thanks to this guy - I no longer see Halloween Candy the same way. I see Halloween as an opportunity to hook kids into brands of candy.
And then Christmas - then finally Easter. All big chocolate 🍫 celebrations. Thank goodness it’s expensive because that’s a big deterrent. And I always break out with milk chocolate- always. Even in my 60’s.
There’s already so much added sugar to everything for taste. Finally Heinz has a sugar free ketchup. But, now they use sucralose As long as the gut bacteria isn’t affected- it may be a better move.
Salsa with no added sugars is a good substitute for ketchup.
I’ve over 4 hours of Dr. Lustig and he has def changed my view of sugar but I have one question. Why does he appear to be overweight?
As the doctor floated in and out of the "zone" for the microphone and also ramped up and down his voice without regard to the proximity of the microphone, the resultant audio is all over the place. Hope you get better audio next time. A well-positioned boom or lapel mic might be better. Hope that helps. I'm skipping out on this one. I've seen dozens of Dr. Lustig's videos already-he's fighting the good fight. I bucked sugar and processed food 8 years ago.
Does it make any difference when you take honey? I mean, I only have 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey on my bread with butter. I don't take sugar in my coffee or tea. Since honey is a natural product, I thought itcould be healthier.....
Honey has some benefits but is processed in your body as a sugar. If wanting to quit sugar totally, no honey I'm afraid. Besides, if it's store-bought honey, it's not honey for sure.

diabetic association is getting its money (mainly from food and farma industry) for producing diabetics. As well diabetics (more is better) are crucial for their own existence. Checking fasting insulin is cutting the branch all of them are sitting on.
