Had I met this guy before I went through nursing school, I would’ve change my major to premed and stalked him until he became my mentor! He’s awesome at explaining in the most simplistic way and he keeps it interesting!

I'm sitting here with a quite a few twitches firing in my muscles, 5 years after getting peripheral neuropathy from fluoroquinolones (cipro). None of the 23 doctors I've spoken to on my journey even know that cipro causes peripheral neuropathy. Forget about trying to understand how the damage occurs or how to fix it! They don't even know that 's caused in the first place! I wish they knew what this guy was talking about. I complained to my doctor and nurses that it felt like things were bubbling under my skin 2 days into my cipro course, and they told me it was nothing and to keep taking the drugs. Maybe if they knew anything about antibiotic side effects I wouldn't have permanent nerve damage today. Thank you for spreading this information.
While on cipro, I also had a sudden, acute joint separation in my shoulder (confirmed with MRI), and an all-day EKG shows that I now have about 100 heart palpitations a day, which started around the cipro use. None of the doctors I spoke to think they're connected to the antibiotics. But they also think my twitches are "benign fasciculation syndrome" even though they were clearly caused by cipro. The real kicker is I never showed signs of a bacterial infection, cipro was just given as a first/cheap line of defense.

Holy Hell!! I never thought I’d see this! A person in healthcare, an actual doctor, who sees actual living patients... and teaching.... he’s doing all this AND being human!! I have the urge to reach through my screen and pinch him to see if he’s real! You know... it could be a case of those alien-pod-people!!
Okay... I should have put a disclaimer ahead of that advising that my comment may contain a lethal level of smart-ass sarcasm.... but that just takes the fun out of it!
The true point is that I wish more people in healthcare, all levels... from the person in coding and billing through the most highly trained neurosurgeon, could be real! Don’t tell me what you think I want to hear. Dont just write me a BS prescription when there’s nothing wrong. Talk to me as a person... just how you would want for yourself or your family! If you see someone who has an obvious issue but you have no clue what it is, tell me “I don’t know, but I’ll work with you to figure it out and if I’m not the best doctor for you, I’ll tell you!”
I’d love to have a doctor be honest and real... I’d love to hear and see the humanity! I’d love to hear a doctor tell me “I’m writing this prescription... it does have some chances of rare side effects... I’ve seen one guy go bat-shit-crazy, but right now it’s the best treatment we have! I could handle that level of honest, humility and humanity!!

My doctor never once mention to me that I should never took a fluroquinolone antibiotics if I am on benzodiazepine, now I am floxed by the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and still suffering both mentally and physically. Pains on my back, Achilles ,my thumbs , depression and sleep disturbance. I could barely walk without feeling the pain in both my knees and stand for a min doing any house chores. It's literally a living hell. Fluroquinolone are nothing but posion ,they should be banned from the market and companies who made them should be sued for causing harm to the consumers.

All fluoroquinolone antibiotics are topoisomerase inhibitors just like chemotherapy and have many of the same long term effects including debilitating pain, permanent and progressive Peripheral Neuropathy, and even death.

I have been injured multiple times! First was Levaquin, then a few years later, Cipro before I knew it was these medications! Then I found out and told the drs and all of them have either damaged me further or looked at me and sent me back to my primary! I have severe nerve damage, small fiber neuropothy, connective tissue disorder that’s non hereditary! Torn tendons, brain tumor, pain that’s non stop! This is a slow death!

I developed a chest infection 4 weeks ago and went to the doctor after suffering for 2 weeks. She prescribed antibiotics which I took for 5 days with no improvement.
I went back to the surgery and saw another practicing nurse who prescribed a different antibiotic.
I took the first pill when I got home and not much later went to bed.
During a restless night I developed slight pain in certain points in my body and decided to get out of bed.
I was completely taken aback when I tried to stand up.
I couldn’t stand due to the pain in my left leg and my right ankle and toes.
In addition, my right elbow was swollen and painful along with sore hands.
I finally got through to ANOTHER doctor who prescribed another drug called amoxicillin, and told me not to take any more. I told him they were already in the bin.
The antibiotic which caused the pain in my joints was Clarithromycin.
Let me say at this point that I had no joint or muscle pain before I took this drug, and I was shocked by the amount of damage it caused.
I am now on my second day with Amoxicillin and Ibuprofen for the pain…..fingers crossed…OUCH!

The link to FQ and MG, something similar to statins and ALS. Many studies, none with certainty but I worked at UTSW and many patients came in healthy, no prior medical, no family hx, only change was starting a statin. Its interesting to consider that maybe a gene mutation that can make you higher risk and the medication can induce that.

In one of the other lectures on CME, they mention that "floxing" episodes last an average of 14 months, and documented cases lasted up to 9 years. However, here it was mentioned that it typically resolves with cessation of Abx therapy. Which is the case?

I think these people with severe reactions to fluoroquinolones like ciprofloxacin are underdiagnosed, it can def last much longer than 3-5 days

Nerve damage is usually permanent. I have full body daily muscle twitches caused by less than a week of cipro use. I've had a strong twitch in my left hand for the last 3 weeks straight.

They have no damn clue because hardly anyone reports in to the FDA or CDC anymore! I have, but it'll get thrown in the circular file. But just wait. Changes are coming, and heads will roll. I guarantee it.
