    I really liked that Alice got right back to work too! I didn't see it as her "not learning anything" because - as you said - this isn't a cautionary tale against camming. It's more that she refused to be scared off or allow something she loves doing and does well to be stolen away from her.
    People take issue with Lola not calling out married viewers interacting with her stream but, like, their marital issues are theirs, not hers. Just what can she do about it?
    I think James' criticism of the nebulous explanation are pretty valid, but I also really agree with Chelsea's explanation too! It's so nice hearing such respectful, level-headed film discussion in a media landscape so dominated by absolutes.

      @@WhaleManMan MJ Red The way I read it was this: Fake Lola stole Alice's account that she has put hundreds of hours to cultivate, and with it all of the income that she earns and lives off of. Fake Lola tells viewers she loves them, gives a walkthrough tour of Alice's home, and puts a picture of Alice's brother on video - breaking rules that Alice has in place for very real safety reasons. Alice is furious and wants this shit to end, and who could blame her?
      If Alice shrugged and went and got a "normal job," Fake Lola would still be out there stealing her identity for money, doing anything viewers wanted, putting her and her loved ones in danger. I thought being willing to break her nose and delete her account was pretty brave of her in that respect, not selfish.

      Sara Shockey the thing is, she can’t actually win because the top earners are bots. She’s not just doing it for money, she’s seemingly doing it to be the best but that’s a futile endeavor because not only are the top all fake, her acct is going to get stolen again if she gets popular. So it doesn’t work in the ending

  • @shawn.badass
    @shawn.badass 5 років тому +54

    I think the premise of the movie revolves around the idea of AI taking over the concept of deepfakes. Deepfakes is when people take all the pictures they can and Photoshop it on to a different video. So the fake Lola is basically an AI using deepfakes technology to become real Lola. Kind of shows you the horrors of the internet and how technology can grow to be harmful. And the ending she explains that if she gets copies again then she'll just make a new account with a different persona. Her intentions could be that she wants to cover the site with all her accounts.

    Yay! I’m happy you guys liked this movie and I knew you’d have this view on it(being that sex work is still a very valid profession that should be respected). I think it’s hard for a lot of people to understand the point of the film because of all the negative stereotypes we have about that kind of work. I commented on FoundFlix video saying the same thing, imagine it being a UA-camr.
    And I agree, I think the explanation was a little unsatisfying but at the same time, I guess it’s really not the point. I almost considered it some sort of manifestation of what Alice would become online if she continued to stray from her rules(like doing the vibatron show). She would make it to the top but it wouldn’t really be her anymore and she’d lose control of what she liked doing(which is creative and fun shows). If that makes any sense.
    And I feel like the ending seen where she breaks her nose was to show the audience that she was an authentic person but the fake Lola was just that, fake(with her digital scars). And I think it almost taught Alice to be herself and stick to what she believes in because that’s what her audience liked about her.

      Jama Jama yes I think being a UA-camr is a valid profession because they put work into editing and budgeting videos, taking many hours. All sex cam workers do is wear something sexy, and do random sexual shit. No editing involved. But just my opinion.

    • @ashleywilliams4665
      @ashleywilliams4665 5 років тому +10

      Andrew M fair enough. It is your opinion. I don’t know anything about working as a cam person but the character in this movie seems to put a lot of work into what she does. I don’t see it any different than being a performer for some type of show(maybe a singer or comedian). She buys the costumes and props,plans and then puts on the show all on her own. I don’t think editing determines whether it is actual work or not.(not to undermine those who do edit their work, I’ve watched James edit and I know him and his assistant editors work really hard on the kill counts).
      There are of course cam people who just turn on the camera and start talking or taking their clothes off but there are UA-camrs who just vlog their day and upload what they have. It just seems very similar to me, it’s still a job.
      But I’ll agree to disagree😁

  • @annegrey3780

    I really like how Chelsea points out that the things that happened to Lola could have happened to a UA-camr. I never really got the sense that the movie is trying to say "this is what being a cam girl is" I always felt like the movie was saying this is who Lola is, and in Lola's view I think she does view her work as very similar to what a UA-camr does. And I also find it interesting how Lola only sees her cam work as violating is when she's no longer in control of it. Even before fake Lola isn't breaking Lola's rules (even when fake Lola is upping Lola's viewers), it still really upsets Lola that she's not in control of it. Which is interesting in an age where so much is online but where people also tend to have this mentality of "if its on the net it's your fault if other people take it" (a tone actually voiced during the movie as Lola tries to get help). And I'd imagine that that is actually something UA-camrs also have to deal with (though maybe not as much as cam girls).

    11:20 recently watched this movie for myself and I felt this. The scene where she answers the door in her cam clothes and then frantically covers up, I forgot she was even in any kind of compromising clothes because it had felt so comfortable so far. She's a camgirl, loves being a camgirl, and it seems like the movie is really lax with how she's presented instead of constantly repeating how "wrong" it is to be a sex worker.
    Despite being a horror movie, I feel like the environment of the characters and their relationships is really loose and relaxed and I think that's super cool. She has a loving relationship with her mother and even her brother approves of it.

    I saw this movie at the Fantasia Film Festival this past summer in Montreal as well and the director and writer were both there. They definitely talked at length about the colour grading and about wanting the cam life and the regular life to be visually distinct, and apparently the colours for the cam life scenes were pretty tough on the eyes haha. I agree with everything you guys said about this movie and I was really disappointed with the complete lack of explanation for wtf is happening.

    It seems to me like the "thing" that pretends to be Lola is meant to be a simulacra of sorts. (Simulacra are creatures thats can perfectly replicate a living being , the most know instance of them in media would be the game "Simulacra" which uses it in a technological way that basically sets up a mythos for the creatures existing within the internet/another universe that can be viewed through the internet.) It seems like the movie either took inspiration from their mythos or inteded to depict the alternate lola as a simulacra (if that's true then idk why they never stated that explicitly tho).
    I may have gotten some of the specifics wrong about simulacra, but I did find out that they are named for the word simulacrum which means ,A representation or imitation of a person or thing. So thats kinda interesting.

    • @Siegberg91
      @Siegberg91 5 років тому +2

      That would explain why the creature has no physical form what is strange is that the copy can not see itself in her maybe she is more of a sucubus which can get in her dreams that would explain why she can see her home a sucubus has the bonus that they look like the people want them to look

I love your podcast and you are very nice couple and your voices are very easy for the ear, very good "readers" (don't know if there a real term for it). My hubby hasn't actively listened any of your videos or watched kill-counts, but now he keeps checking my monitor everytime he hears either of your voices, but especially when hearing both of you. :) Have a nice holiday season, waiting for more videos and podcasts before you couple take break. I usually agree with you guys but I did not like this movie at all. The protagonist didn't learn anything in the end and I thought she was really hard to root for. To be clear not because she was doing cam work but just the way she treats her mom and the fact that she's always trying to pursue "fame"/notoriety.

    • @ethanwilkins5001
      @ethanwilkins5001 5 років тому +36

      Isaac Kangas I respectfully disagree. She learned how to talk to her mom about her life honestly, and decided to do camming at the end because it’s what she loves to do for work (a type of work that inherently requires you to work for a type of popularity/fame). I think it’s clear that fame wasn’t as important to her as her reclaiming her identity/sexual consent due to the fact that she physically broke her nose so she could delete her account she worked so hard for. I loved that the resolve was her getting closer to her mom through honesty and getting rid of her shame of sex work. (This movie was super accurate btw. I’m a current gay cam model and can relate)

      @@ethanwilkins5001 I think you bring up some really good points but I still do think that there's plot issues at the end. In the end she decides to delete her account because it got taken over by a bot but she didn't solve that problem. Like she didn't delete the program or anything, it's still out there taking over accouts on this website. Furthermore she didn't even really expose this program on a bigger level to the news or tell other cam girls who are climbing up the ranks themselves. I thought the movie implied that someone might be killing these girls once they can take over their accounts so is she just neglecting to inform these girls of this life threatening shadow program? It just feels like nothing was learned. At the end she starts another account on the same cam website to try and move up the ranks again but what happens when she gets to the top again? Will the same thing with the bots happen? What's to stop them? Idk, I respect your opinion but the whole movie just felt like it had major loose ends that made the plot feel a little redundant.
