Inline 5 Cylinder Engine - Explained
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- The five cylinder engine isn't too common in the automotive industry, though it is an interesting engine choice. It offers more cylinders than an inline four, at less length than an inline 6, giving it good packaging abilities for FWD vehicles, and the potential for good power. Although the primary and secondary reciprocating forces are balanced vertically, there is a plane imbalance, requiring the I5 to have a balancing shaft in order to cancel out the vibrations, if desired.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY!
Driving a 5-cylinder car myself, being a Volvo V70. And let me tell you from personal experience, I'm never going down to a 4-cylinder engine again. The smooth power delivery and wonderful humming of the engine is so wonderful. Yes, it consumes a bit more fuel, however that's a price I think I worth paying for how much you get on the other end. It gives such a comfortable ride and just in general it works. Every time :)
my 5 cylinder jetta has 30/41 mpg. amazing gas milage for a 5 cylinder
@@cyruskaviani3990 I don't measure in miles, I'm afraid. But I'll take your word for it, and I'm glad to hear 😁
The sound of I5's... Ohhh my. I'd like to own an I5 car someday just for that reason.
Me to, got to be the best sounding engines
Born in the nineties and from Sweden, growing up with a car interest the 5 cylinders from Volvo where always what you wanted, always turns your head and makes you smile hearing that perfect exhaust note from a 5 cylinder turbo engine, and today I own a S60R and every time I turn the key and step on the throttle there is nothing quite like it.
+JS92GoW2 All focus st owners say that, cannot drive that car without a smile. Sadly the greenies took over and now they're only making inline 4 engines. Lame.
+Roy Rki Focus RS* They're the ones with 300 hp. ST has under 260 hp.
+Roy Rki I know, I miss the 5 cylinder on the focus st and rs
You should've add "best engine sound" to pros
^ this , i drove volvo and it has a great sound when you pushed the pedal down :D
boedhaspeaks
Agreed, my first car was a '93 Volvo 850 with an I5. Thing sounded like a V8 when you floored it.
yesss! such a shame they are not being used that much anymore..
I knew I wasn't the only one who loved how the volvo 850 I5 sounds
Jet IceBane when I bought my Audi 80 2.3 inline 5, the sound was like the 5th most important reason for the choice. It's my first car, I've had it for 3 weeks and so far it's perfect :-D
You forgot to mention on the Pros the sound that it produces that is awesome :D
I love my 2.5 vw beetle. Smooth and zippy when needed. I'll be sad to see it go.
I5 Engines sound way better than any I4 or I6 imo.
i6 the best
i6 sounds great but when you listen to the rally quattro you know nothing beat 5 cylinders screaming and echoing through forest. It has it's own distinctive beautiful yet demonic sound when let's open
Now best of both worlds is the vr5.
@@dieselgeezer18 nope

Excellent video. It does explain why it has been, and in some respects continues to be, a popular engine choice with European manufacturers. Getting the increase in displacement and power over the I-4 and the smooth power application provided by the overlapping power strokes makes a lot of sense for a car like a Volvo or a Mercedes-Benz.
My chevy colorado has an 3.7L 5 cylinder... which sounds killer with the borla.
"When would you want to use an Inline 5 engine?"
When you're building a rally car from Audi.
Or the 3.7l Colorados and Canyons. Great trucks.
Yeah. Audi RS3. Give it a lifted suspension. Quattro does the other part
I previously owned a 2.5 Acura TL, was a good lil car. Ran well and I was impressed with the power and fuel economy.
I've got an 08 Volvo C30, and it's I-5. Gotta say, that sound is amazing 😍
Love the 5-cylinder in my RS3, such a special little fire breather.
the og audi 5 cylinder is the only good sounding one they made. the modern version doesnt sound as raw
I got a 1999 Volvo S70. When you step on the gas, you just go! But, there's no over the top sound to wake up the neighbors and I don't burn half a tank getting to work ha
Love my Volvo's. The feel, the sound, and the power (2010 XC60) are awesome. The non-turbo (2001 V70) has very smooth power delivery, but is a little under powered IMO, to only get 23mpg. But hey, as a mechanic, the last thing I want to do is work on MY vehicle after a week of working on everyone else's, that's the real reason I drive volvos.
I have a 2004 non turbo V70 and while it is adequately powered, fast is never a word I would use to describe it. But it's very smooth, sounds great, and mine being a 5-speed manual helps make it feel faster than it really is.
im buying my 1st I5 in a chevy colorado, I noticed the slight movement at idle & didnt know if this was normal, thank you for this video,
Owning a 89' Honda Accord Inspire , i have to say it's I5 engine sound like a beast . love it when revving the rpm . Although having the 2.0L one , instead of 2.5L i have to say the engine is pretty cool to own . if only it came with a v-tec...unicorn farts would be everywhere...
I love the I5 in my Jetta. Pretty good low-mid range torque sounds good when you let it rip
Myself an automobile engineer in 🇮🇳 and I am watching your UA-cam Channel regularly.
I have a chevy Colorado with 3.5 I5 , always wondered about that engine. Thanks for the video
Thanks a lot for answering mine and I'm sure many others question! Found this really interesting and really cool. Although they are not too relevant these days, it's a very cool concept, anyway thanks for the explanation!
Got a 2000 Volvo S70, love the I5 engine, sound great, smooth and great low end torque!
Dude I love your channel man, I learn so Much just from this UA-cam channel of yours, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MAN!!!
You should do some more upgrades on your car review!
Hi EE! I am student of Aviation Academy in Belgrade, Serbia. I am a hardcore petrolhead also and I love mechanics too. I love your videos, they are really awesome and full of info. So I wanted to ask you if you can make a video about inline 7 cylinder engines. How do they work, pros/cons, firing order, crankshaft design, balance of primary and secondary forces, etc. Big thanks from your loyal subscriber
I have a 2005 VW Jetta 2.5 and I always was wondering how a 5 cylinder worked! Thanks for the video!
My 1994 single cab chassis VW Transporter has a 2.5 litre inline 5 Cyl. Still going strong. slow revving but smooth power with low rpm's
giving you views like its my job right now
z33ny Appreciating the views like it's my job. Well, it is.
haha you do a great job explaining you deserve it. Are you an engineer or just someone who loves this stuff?
I've seen half a dozen of your videos and they are all great. You are very good at explaining things.
After looking at the firing orders for both the I-5 and V10 engines I was right, the firing interval of an I-5 is half that of a V10, that's why they have such a similar sound. If only straight-6 engines sounded like V12's :p
A friend of mine had an Audi RS2 avant with a 5-cylinder motor... that thing was a fast beast and it was probably the best sounding engine I've ever heard below 6 cylinder sizes but still better than a few inline sixes and v8's out there.
2.5l turbo T5 engine found in the Mk2 Ford Focus ST over here in the UK is a monster with the 5cyl, run just over 300bhp with a simple remap and amazing torque.
I really love I5`s ..
All the coupes from Audi i`ve had, have had Inline 5 ..
At the moment a close friend has two Audi 100`s (C3 and C4) .. both packed with Inline 5 .. Really great engines, reliable.. doesnt bring such problems as V6 from 90s.. (2.5 TDi from audi, everyone)
And better power then I4`s I`ve had .. Only engine i`de give advantage would be I6 (for day-to-day usage) .. But favourite for me would be quattro+I5+massive turbo spinning the shit out of that engine :D (note - this i mean about old cars and projects.. i still woudln`t mind new V6`s or even V8 ..) ;D
Anyways - great video, enjoyed :)
Oh, and did i mention the sound ? Just wonderful .. you dont need music for a drive in car with I5 .. just roll down the window and enjoy the natural sound of wild I5 ;D
Just dropping a comment here in 2021 as I just watched the video. I was always curious but never did any research at all.
Thanks for the video.
Considering how much people hate the sound and feel of 4-cylinder engines in luxury cars, I'm surprised turbo 2.5L I5s haven't started becoming popular as a premium engine option for small to midsize cars. They burn less fuel than a V6 while feeling and sounding more special. What's not to like?
Seriously, thank you for taking the time to make all these videos.
Christian E Just for you! :)
Ford Focus ST/RS, Volvo engined 5 pot burble
Amazing cars
The sound of it is a major plus also!!
Having owned
I2,I3,I4,I6,F6,V6,V8 engines I've never owned an I5 but they're the best sounding other than a V10.
Flat plane crank V8s and V12s also sound amazing 🤩
i have understood much about working of cars by watching ur vedios.
nice explanation
thanks
Thanks man, I had been curious about this for a long time! :)
Interested in more detail on the primary and secondary forces, what causes them, and how they end up balancing. A video on that would be pretty awesome but if somebody could link one that already exists or even just type it up. I would greatly appreciate this!
Volvo is love volvo is life
#l5mooselife
*Chevy
Chevy has an i5 too
Best youtube channel ever !
2.4 20v JTDm here and i love it 💪
Thank you for explaining this I have long been Baffled by the advantages of this engine ( mostly because of old AUDI I5 making 1k+ HP w/ turbo when modified) I didn't understand how they could balance firing order and it not self destruct let alone make 1k+ HP.
the land rover td5 is a great engine for the job it has to do. thank you for the video i was thinking you shod do a Inline 5 Cylinder Engine - Explained Yesterday.
I have a 5-cylinder in my Chevrolet Colorado. It's great!
For Diesel motors this configuration was great. Mercedes has built a lot of them, mainly on 50's with the 170 cars, well into 60's, then later lending them to SsangYong vans and pick ups. They were wonderfully smooth. Dont know if they still build them.
love the sound of my i5 in my focus st way better than any i4
Could you do a similar video on the V5 layout that VAG use? Thanks!
My brother has an I5 in his Volkswagen Rabbit (Golf). It's an interesting engine, and somehow beats my 3.1L V6 in top speed. It's a pain to get parts for, but that's how modern German cars tend to be.
Ever see a Fairbanks-Morse engine? Now that is a different kind of arrangement altogether.
You should make v5 explanation, love your videos :)
can you please add the actual working of the engines ? i mean apart from the theory, how they really look like and how they actually work .other than this the video was too good !

Volvo enthusiast unite! Ghehe.
Audi's 2.2 20v Turbo. Damn it's good
Even the 2.5 Turbo used in the current gen RS Q3, RS3 and TT RS are great!
I would like the videos be longer, not only the basic principles but some thing about which company uses in line 5 and are they any good on cars? Some more personal judgement about this technology would be more interesting
+Yang Gao that's not his intention in his vidshe wants to explain how things work, not who uses it or whateverthis would also create high risk of people being upset if he forgot a brand or model , etcwant more info? google or youtube
Thanks, The inline 5 has the same Rocking Couple as an in-line 3!
Your videos keep mentioning "when you want larger displacement." Do you explain this displacement limit per cylinder in any video?
Also a pro is, that its possible to fit it in cars with power delivered to the front sideways allowing also for a shorter car if you wish. Therefore it will rock the car a little of course.
An I6 however wont fit sideways easily, especially in cars with power delivered to the front. Most likely you will put is parallel to the driving direction requireing a longer hood.
Therefore an I6 counters all primary and secondary forces and doesnt rock allowing for even higher revs. I6s are easy to work on making them one of the ideal engines for tuners.
i love my 2.5 i5 in my vw rabbit :)
Maybe next time you hook up with HumbleMechanic you could explain the VW VR5? Mostly i want to know why vw would've offered it in a car that also had an inline 5 option, inline 4 option, and vr6 option. I like the way the VR5 sounds but i can't wrap my head around its existence
The advantages of VR6 are already described in an other video of him. The reason why VW did that is obvious. Because they had the know-how and the right materials to do it. So, depending on the time it was produced, it could have been a decent step to spare dimensions and "recycle" some existing material that are, whatever, mass produced for other cars in the portofoglio.
didnt one of the focuses have one of these
Nobody does 5 cylinders better than Volvo! Too bad that Volvo isn't going to make them much longer.
+97I30T Respectfully, I must disagree. Volvo makes (made) outstanding ones, but MB's OM617 and OM602 are hard acts to follow. Indeed, the 617 was the first I5 ever used in production cars... and one of them still uncomplainingly hauls me 50 miles to and from work every day, 32 years and 211,000 miles later.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM617
I have a Turbo 5 in my Volvo and it is a very strong engine.
Keep it up. Thanks for all your videos. Very informative.
hard question: which is the most technically elegant car engine in your opinion. And which engine do you prefer (not necessarilly a make and type, just a layout). Thanks.
The venerable Audi AAN. Such a well designed motor. Capable of 450 hp on stock internals.
Hey you should do a video on water methanol injection by the way your videos are pretty awesome
The poor man's V-10.
+The Naked Argonian For some reason this made me think of some lyrics from the Stone Temple Pilots song 'Creep': "I'm half the man I used to be"
Yeah exactly, my 2006 Volvo s40 is pretty dirt cheap and sounds really good for that kinda money
Yuck
I like I5 more than V10
Just like a 4 banger is the poor man's V-8. Personally I think V-6's are the way to go.
Just bought an Audi RS3 it has an inline 5. The sound is amazing. And it makes 400hp
That plane imbalance must be why GM told me that the it was normal that the 5cyl in my Colorado sounded like hell VS the V6 in my S10 and the V8 in my Silverado.
As a Volvo s60R owner i support this video haha
+1. .. Fond memories of the Audi inline 5cly 2.2l turbo used in the mid-nineties models UrS4 and UrS6, both sedan and kombi. .. RS2 enhancements at an owners fingertips. ...
i love the smoothness of my stilo abarth 2,4 i5 at low rpm and its sound and power past 4500 rpm
Audi Quattro Inline 5 Cylinder= best sounding engine.
so if adding a balancing shaft robs power, how much of a trade off would it be? would this make the added power vs an I4 moot even with the larger displacement? seems like a lot of hassle for little benefit. great video again EE. thanks
More displacement for a naturally aspirated engine will more than make up the loss through the balancing shaft. That said, I4's make a lot of sense. They're smaller, lighter, cheaper, and with forced induction displacement isn't as much of a concern. Volvo is looking to make their whole fleet I4's now, with forced induction for the more powerful models when needed.
Are you also going to make a video on three cylinder engines?
Indeed I am!
*****
Especially when they're put in motorcycles aka Triumph Daytona 675/ Speed Triple/ Street Triple, MV F3 675/800 etc.
Many have said it: It also sounds amazing!
ur amazing bro! I have anew cars channel and i just subbed to u!
great work!
the vr6 has 957k views , the inline 5 has 86k. 2.5 v-dub motors are good and potent
I would like a little more in depth version of this video
Hello your work are absolutely awesome...
I have a request it you could explain mw how does the silvertop 20v engine work ...
Thanks a lot
I love my B5244T!
I just wanted to learn about the Vibration level Vs No of Cylinder Engine. Could you explain the same
Best frickn exhaust note ever
Honda also had the G series engine. They abandoned it in 1998. There could have been a VTEC I5.
All your videos are awesome, I was just curious about Electric engines. Bmw I series, telsa and many more seem to be on the way. As an engineer what direction do you think the automotive industry is going to take? Also are you going to start making videos on electric engines?
Patrick Smith I have a big playlist on the subject. I believe they're definitely going to start becoming more popular. I'd love to have one as we already have a car with good gas mileage, but it'd be cool to have an electric for around town to not use any fuel. I'm also a firm believer in progressive energy sources, so I'm all for it. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/play/PL2ir4svMoaYj48N0VWoic25P9LaU2wlbA.html
Will you do a video on the VW W-8!?
love yor werk mate thanx
i5s also sound really good, almost like a V10. At least the one in my 07 Colorado does lol
Audi & Volvo like this!!
Hello. Could you research and make a video about the VW VR5 engine? How do they manage to balance it etc. Thank you in advance. Greetings from Greece
I really like this chanel. Thank a lot. Sir
Audi´s i5 don´t have a balance shaft. at least the i5 i had/have (NG2 and AAN) they balance the engine with some unbalances in the flywheel and in the timing belt wheel.
plus they sound sweet
looking at that crankshaft head-on diagram, it seems to me like they should go 14253 instead of 14325. Like the firing order on a radial. I'm guessing either there's a vibration effect not immediately obvious to me or maybe an enhanced torque delivery like with a 270 degree twin.
balancing shaft
For the record they go 12453
Not to be picky, but I thought it was 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation for any engine to have a complete cycle. so a V8 would have 90 degrees, and and I5 would have 144?
Some of the Chevy Canyons came stock with an in-line five. I thought that that was weird but I guess it makes sense because an in-line four is too small and a V6 or in-line 6 isn't really that fuel effecient.
Chevy Colorado. GMC Canyon. And, yes, they did have 4cyl engines, too.
What if you put everything together. Cilinder 1 at TDC , timing gears on the right position of the marks. Both when you check the compression of all cilinders, and the cilinder one doesn't show any compression.
On this case what could be?
Please, if you built an inline 5 cylinder engine with the center cylinder having a larger diameter than the other 4, such that it had twice the displacement of any of the other ones, could that engine use the inline 6 natural balancing piston movement pattern? (Outermost move synchronized, then 2 and 4 move synchronized, then 3 moves alone?) Would this work just as well as an inline six? Thank you for all your videos!!!
Question: why has my in-line 5cylinder Not a balancer shaft?
VW Quantum (Passat 32B by us in Germany) from year 1987
