How to fix the Oil Pressure Gauge in a 1966 Mustang

- In a previous video I had an issue where the Oil Pressure Gauge was not working. It's time to dig in and find out why the gauge is not working. During the process I find other issues and learn a little more about the wiring that the previous owner had done.
The car is a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a factory V8 and 4 speed transmission.
This video is a How to diagnose why the Oil Pressure Gauge is not working on a 1966 Mustang
Shot with GoPro Hero 5, edited on Davinci Resolve 16.

you know you show stuff i run into daily, you actually made this on my BD lol, i've got a shop doing my wiring now and this is what he ran into
Thanks, but it's probably clever editing that makes me look smart. :)
Another quick fix for me. Figured my cluster didn't have a good ground since the engine compartment was fitting nice. My dash was painted as well. When you mentioned that I opened it up. I saw that the ground connector was cracked in the back of the temp sensor. EZ
Nice work!
you have come a long way in a year.
Thanks!
@@AndyKruseChannel and thank you. Your videos are very helpful. Speaking of which, if the gauges work after testing the wiring, then most likely the sending units are bad, correct?
@@bofa83 Good question. If the needle on the gauge moves when you ground the wire that goes to the sending unit, but the needle does not move when connected to the sending unit and the car is on, then yes, your sending unit(s) are bad.
Every time I work on my Mustang, I remember why Im a MOPAR guy...
It's not for everyone. :)
That rear port that had the "oil temperature sensor" might have been a vacuum port. Does it go into the engine valley or intake port? I wonder if the previous owner used that as a plug? Was it hooked up?
Nice video by the way!
Thanks!! I feel so silly as I learned quite a bit while making this video, and I say things throughout the video that I later correct as I figure stuff out. That part of the manifold is the runner for cylinder 8, that's why I made the comment wondering if they were using that sending unit as some type of air intake sensor. They had it plugged in but wired to the oil temp gauge, it's making me wonder what else I'm going to find as I continue to work on this car. :)
Late response BUT that coolant temp sender is blocking the flow of mixture to cyl #8 just install a pipe plug there. What you removed from the front of the manifold was a busted mechanical temp gauge bulb. Just FYI.
Thanks for the heads up. :)
Hey Andy on my 66 that's the vacuum port for the power brakes 🙃..
I'm convinced the previous owner(s) just plugged stuff in where ever it fit. :)
That back port is for the vacume hose for the power booster if you had power brakes. I own two 66 mustangs. One with a 289 and the other a 347 and built them both. I ran new under the hood wiring harnesses rather than splicing wires. Their not that expensive and look much better.
I wish I had that knowledge going into that video, I felt silly calling it related to oil. :)
so basically this previous owner as I'm finding out on mine, they just don't care just stick it together, guess was just a sensor that fit the hole, screws missing doubleback tape instead, lazy i don't get it, mine oh we cleaned motor, the spray painted everything
My pressure gauge gos too hot when I put my key on the on position on my 1966 ford mustang
If you mean that your oil pressure gauge maxes out when the key is on, then your oil sending unit is likely done and you'll need a new one. :)
Good video.. hey the water temp sensor didn't leak ?
Not yet :) But I have another coolant leak now that I have to deal with (two actually).
Where do you buy your parts from? Do you have a “go to” source related to doing research about the different projects you tackle? Thanks. Michael
Most of my Mustang specific parts are ordered from CJ Pony Parts, with the some purchased from Ebay and other part sites. My experience with CJP has been mostly good, plus they're a West Coast company so I get my parts quicker. :)
Ok perfect, thanks for the response! Keep up the good videos, and work!
Andy you know what gear I need to make speedo work with 17" tires
I can't find it right now, but there are websites that allow you to enter the diameter (or circumference) of the tire and the gearing you have in your rear end and it will tell you the number of teeth you need on the Speedo gear. 17" tires sound really small, you probably mean 17" wheels, the tires will be more like 25" or so.
Thanks Andy yeah I meant wheel size sorry but I did find a article 4 step method to figure out your rear in Gear’s
WARNING!!!!! Behind the gauge cluster, the wire going to the Temp gauge is RED with a light WHITE stripe on it.... WARNING!!!!!! The wire going to the AMP GAUGE is SOLID RED.... YOU GET IT????? After 50 years the thin white stripe is pretty faded... DO NOT PUT SOLID RED ON THE TEMP GAUGE.. you will burn up the gauge and possible the voltage step down regulator.... I HATE what Ford did in the wiring in this car, it looks like a 5 year old.. that like the color RED, wired the car... HEY FORD.. there ARE OTHER COLORS.... USE THEM... STUPID!
Thanks for the heads up.
