My father was stationed there on Tinian island during WW2 he was a BB Loader on the B-29 A/C. Wish I could find a video of him loading up the bombs on a B-29, but heck I might not even recognize him back then. I sure do miss him!

      Hi Alan,
Our dad was in the Signal Corps on Tinian and took several photos of bomb-loading. You can view these on our website, ihbwink.com/. The bomb-loading is in the Tinian black & white at ihbwink.com/tinian-black-white-images/ Hope you can find something with your dad in the picture. Good luck. Ben

Priceless Americana chronicling a moment time and space whose actors are mostly gone, but not forgotten. Although we salute our nation's achievement, we mull that success with prayers that such a passage will not soon return. A great post and thanks for it.

I got to meet Bill Rogers, who signed off the Elona Gay to fly with the 1st Atomic bomb. He was a great fiddle player also.

I was on Tinian in the mid 80's there was just a small industrial pier to service tuna boats a little town, a bar and on the other side of this small island there was the old USAAF base, which had nothing but the crushed coral runways, the base grid (roadways) and 2 bomb pits. The pits weren't even marked just cement lined pits. I have seen later pictures and the pits are now marked and have plaques and somewhat of a tourist fashion. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were interesting trips as well.

WHY THE LITTLE BOY NUKE WAS FIRST AND THE FATMAN NUKE WAS THE SECOND
The Little Boy bomb was chosen to be first because it was simple and guranteed to work however it took 2 Billion USD to enrich the Uranium for it and four long years to enrich 240 Pounds of Enriched Uranium to do the job. However the Fatman Bomb AKA the Plutonium Bomb only required six and one half ounces of Plutonium to the same damage as Little Boy. However the Fatman bomb was allot more powerful than the Little Boy bomb plus Fatman nuke was cheaper to build and did not need to be enriched since Plutonium was a a generous by product of running a Uranium Reactor. It only took six and one half ounces of Plutonium to equal the power of 240 pounds of Enriched Uranium used in Little Boy bomb. The Fatman Nuke was more bang for the buck and some of the less intelligent British scientists wanted use 240 pounds of Plutonium to equal the power of Little Boy. However if they had used 240 pounds of Plutonium the entire island of Honshu would have been destroyed and have a half life of 75,00 years making it the worlds worst Nuclear Foot Print. Eventually Fatman was the chosen to be the Production Atomic Bomb cheaper to build plus the detonation design was simplified and very dependeble and less exepensive to build. It cost 2 Billion USD to enrich 240 of pounds of Uranium for the Little Boy Bomb vs the six and one half ounces of plutoium that is by product of running a Uranium Reactor this made the cost of building the Fatman Implosion Bomb much cheaper with more for the buck. BTW if you read more you would learn the Little Boy Bomb was dangerous to arm and unstable plus they had three or four instances where it almost exploded in the USA and on Tinian Island in the Pacific. That is the reason they armed the Little Boy Bomb after taking off 100 miles from Tinian Island. If the Little Boy Bomb had detonated on Tinian Island it would have destroyed the entire B-29 Super Bomber Fleets and would have been a huge major set back on the war.

If the US won the war by nuking Japan by the Enola Gay taking off from Tinian, then why did we wage the battle of Okinawa? Okinawa is much closer to Japan than Tinian, so what advantage did we gain from taking Okinawa from the Japanese? We lost over 12,000 dead in that battle. Why didn't we send the two bombers from Okinawa? Seems like a waste of American lives to even take Okinawa.

There was no guarantee the bombs would make them surrender. The plan was still to invade.

And Okinawa was the staging point for the invasion

You must realize that soldiers were literally treated as pawns, If the generals/leaders needed something done they didn't care how many people died

The atomic bombs were made by the Germans during the 2nd war, not by the USA. The allies stole them, because of these, USA. and the USSR developed the nuclear age, these were manufactured in Norway.
A detail of the pump is the square box tail, for greater stability and precision, the Germans had that technology in the bombs, be precise, like the ones launched by the Junker Stuka 87 aircraft.
