It all depends but either way this game was meant to be goofy and offensive so idc. It’s also old as shit
Y'know, my idea of what is an "Immersive sim" is that it's not a game genre, but rather a byproduct of how the game is. That being a linear game that allows and accepts multiple ways to succeed in it, including those that the devs did not intend. It's completely consequential and attempting to intentionally make one leads to poor results.

Great video. It's hard to describe Postal 2 - a game unlike any other - it has something that makes it appealing despite it's over the top antics. A big kudos for posting the games and music featured - that was an excellent touch as I wanted to see both as I liked one song and one game.
I first played this game when I was 9 years old at a friend's house. I've had so much fun playin it throughout the years, especially after the updates. My favorite part is the mall cause I steal all the food and feed as many dogs as I can and then have them kill for me. I still can't believe how this game is even allowed on Steam, but I'm glad that it is. lol
The aggression is already there. People would be violent either way, and video games have nothing to do with it. This is only a debate because of pearl-clutching idiots in the 90s
I remember getting this game on release, I had to buy it direct from RWS' website and hope it would get past customs. It did. To this day my favourite thing to do in Postal 2 is to make someone puke then cut their head off, creating a vomit fountain.
honestly just the trigger warning has me extremely interested in playing this game. 🤔 like... this is definitely not the most hard core thing ever, i can guarantee i've seen worse, but like. I wonder *where* it would scale...
Im surprised Taika Waititi hasnt made some sort of skit about a New Zealand gamer getting the defense force at his door due to him having a copy of Postal 2.
Ayyyy i'm on time for once, and a coverage of one of the most classic cult followed games out there? Charlatan you spoil us! Keep up the amazing videos!
About the whole violence thing, most people who play video games don't play them just for the violence. This is why hatred is largely forgotten while postal 2 is remembered as a cult classic. People who don't play video games see them at a very surface level with no context, which makes them seem like senseless violence for the sake of senseless violence.
I kind of want to go and try to play through this with as little violence as I can, just because it's both such an anthithesis of what the game is about and the devs made it possible.
This was an absolutely PHENOMINAL review with a lot of good takes! This is my first experience with your channel and I hope this kinda stuff is kept up!
Wow - I bought and played this when it first came out, and found it hilarious!! I had no idea the franchise was even updated to run on newer systems; much less still "alive" with a (not crappy copy) sequel in development. Oh, and subbed. 😁
We cant have games like this anymore. I was watching old school comedy movies I watched as a kid like Team America and South Park BLAU and was thinking "this stuff would never fly today"
The whole "if you play violent games you'll be more violent" assumes the human being is way more simple than it actually is For starters, getting a taste of participating in violence unlike movies where you are just an spectator, give you a clear look to the real consequences which most people don't really pay that much of a mind towards If you still think that murder is ok after seeing what it is in a closer aproach, then the issue is in you as a person, not in the game, and if anything might help as a diagnosis tool Kids are more impressionable, yes, but if a game can convince them violence is good, what makes you think a movie or the news themselves won't? that's where parenting has to take charge It is often smart to show kids bad things about the world when they are ready (including violence) so they can be tough about it more effectively It's not the same to simply say "don't do drugs" Than to show the kids the consequences of drugs and then tell them "this is WHY you shouldn't do drugs"
I appreciate the emphasis on transparency in regards to your thoughts concerning "Do violent video games cause violence?". In my opinion, I think the most probable/reasonable answer given all the factors in place is a general "No" . And at least when it comes to the sociology/criminology majors I met in university. They came to the same conclusion. It's the same with movies/books/etc. (Though I understand that in this particular case, games are a very direct medium due to its interaction.) The "cause" when it comes to acts of violence could better be traced to issues concerning the individuals who could potentially commit the crime. Instead of the games themselves being the determining factor.
There's also a million other theories at play here like "aging out of crime" paired with how a lot of people who play video games tended to be younger, but I have neither the time now the proper certifications to go fully in depth on all of them.
also you forget this game was referenced in a law and order SVU episode when a guy talks about using a cat for a silencer in a video game more on videogame violence: maybe instead of just looking at eric harris's WADs we can listen to sue klebold's work in understanding her son dylan, who was the other columbine shooter. she has done a lot of work on understanding everything and has spoken and written about it extensively with all profits going toward further research, and she is not of the opinion that videogames were particularly relevant to what happened. shes a badass

Videos like this are always interesting to me. I'm currently in my late-20's and Postal 2 launched when I was an impressionable 11-12 year old. It was indeed part of my childhood, but I never actually played it until 2013. Gaming media wouldn't shut up about it back in the day, you never saw it on store shelves and never knew anyone who actually played it, but boy howdy, you couldn't turn on G4 without eventually seeing a segment on "that offensive shooter" and how insane and controversial it was. Point being, I don't think a lot of people bought it necessarily, but it's existence was definitely mainstream knowledge. I feel like I understand most of the game's humor. I can assure you, it still comes off as absurdist and nonsensical even if you do get the references. It's very much in line with what adult humor was back in the day. At the risk of sounding like the whiny millennial I am, some of it does rub me the wrong way ... partly because I do understand some of the historical context. Not to say that I think the game should be censored or anything, but just to say that sometimes a something stops being funny when you understand the general attitudes that probably lead to the inclusion of it in the first place. Postal 2 is an interesting game. It never strived to be anything but a stupid albeit fun sandbox shooter. Yet in doing so, it became a strange time capsule of 2003. "Kitschy trash" is probably the single best term one could use to describe Postal 2, and yet it leans sssoooo hard into being nothing but that, that it became historically significant in it's own right.
I've actually come to like the bell system. I have a lot of channels I'm subscribed to but there's only a few I want to be notified about. Notifications for those videos I want to watch immediately but the subscription feed for when I'm bored and I've already watched all the notified ones.

Do note that its not good to be completely not offended to anything, today being offended carries a negative connotation depending on where you’re from but if you are totally immune to such + get angry at others who are reasonably offended by something, you’ll kind of be a deadbeat.
It all depends but either way this game was meant to be goofy and offensive so idc. It’s also old as shit
I love how "waiting in line" and "events of the early 2000s" are in the content warning
Yo habla ingles??
I'm surprised you said "your former employers" as a hostile group. They're literally the only "interest group" by the end game that won't gun you down on site!
They actually help you out if you’re attacked
Postal 2 is the definition of free speech, and it's brilliant. Also, I love anti-sponsors, so please do them as often as possible!
Postal 2 was sold in Germany. It was until 2017 when german Steam moderators went on a purge to remove violent games. Around 25 were removed and the first 3 Postal games were one of them
ah postal 2, a childhood game for me, although my dad banned me from playing it until I was old enough to make decisions on my own I still snuck in to play it anyway while he was at work. fun times.
16:48 omg that's literally the story of Postal 1. Although Postal 1 is wayy more serious and dark than Postal 2.
Unfortunately, to quote a wiser man than myself, the outrage train can't tell the difference between actual violence and over-the-top gonorrhea-spewing satire
Postal had an atmosphere that kinda made me feel queasy, 2 had me laughing while pissing on ceilings
@@DJstarrfish In fact, it's the opposite nowadays. Remember the "Summer of Love" and the "Fiery, but mostly peaceful protests"? Those aren't considered "violent" by the same outrage train, but dare have satirical violence, oh no. It must be taken down.
For my fellow zoomers that are confused about the beef from England I’m pretty sure it’s in reference to a controversy surrounding a lot of beef companies in England using horse meat instead
I thought it was mad cow disease?
In Germany we heard a lot about the mad cow disease or Rinderwahnsinn and how it could eat your brain
No, it was a massive meat recall that took place after finding out some of the meat was infected with Mad Cow disease.
Definitely a reference to bovine spongiform encephalitis, or mad cow disease. From what I recall there was a huge outbreak because the Brit’s were feeding ground up bits of dead cow they couldn’t sell, to cows, which included cow brains, which caused the spread of BSE. Sure other places were doing the same thing, but the Brit’s had a whole scandal with regards to it, there were cover ups and government fuckery as well if I recall correctly
Fun fact: Postal 1 turns from a shooter to a pshycological horror because of the ending. It makes it one of the most darkest endings in video game history (i think)
Wait until the robbers show up and then raid the vault. You can slip past while they're distracted
Wait. The game takes place in a desert state adjacent to California... featuring a postal worker... going on a mass shooting.

"The types i mentioned come from a fringe group that come from a certain forum known for exploits so toxic that most of the gaming community at large disavows them"
Reset era? rpg codex? 4chan? Reddit?
I... Would like some clarification too...
lmao 4chan isn’t “disavowed” by the gaming community as a whole. 4chan *is the gaming community.*
It’s definitely Reset Era. 4Chan and Reddit have their toxic elements, but neither of them doxxed Atlus employees for not making changes to Persona 5 Royal to makes it more “acceptable” for western audiences or that one time they led a successful harassment campaign to get the Western release of Dead Or Alive Extreme 3 cancelled because of “muh sexism” and “Boobs bad”
reset era disgusts me
"This can't be good for me but I feel _GREAT._" is basically the most Postal 2 way to express how I feel about this game.
This absurd game kills me every time. It latches onto all the edgy early 2000s humor that everyone was throwing around in middle school. This game feels so nostalgic yet i only found out about it a year ago. The official server is deadass the chillest meme filled place ive ever been in. Youd think a server centered around all of these controversial subjects would be so toxic that there is a political debate around every corner and etc but no... Even controversial subjects arent even spoken about like ever. (Not to say the fandom and content is the greatest all the time. God there are moments where i go wtf)
I still can't believe how this game is even allowed on Steam, but I'm glad that it is. lol
Next do some postal 3 (also known as 400000 psychic damage)
Did you mean 4? There is no 3
Postal III doesn't exist. Just a shared nightmare, in fact, I don't know what you're talking about. What's a Postal III?
Also known as we don’t talk about that one
What postal 3?
You mean Paradise Lost?
@@tnevadi8370 yeah that one
The aggression is already there. People would be violent either way, and video games have nothing to do with it.
This is only a debate because of pearl-clutching idiots in the 90s
The issue with these videos is that I'm constantly distracted by how bad I want to pet that good boy.
This can't be good for monetization, but I feel great.
Im fucking thrilled how active and loved this series is still today. We have 4 ffs! We dont even have HL3 yet

Postal 3 and 4 are a duo. Postal 1 and 2 are two very different games.

It did.
To this day my favourite thing to do in Postal 2 is to make someone puke then cut their head off, creating a vomit fountain.
holy shit you can do that!?
Lmao vomit fountain
honestly just the trigger warning has me extremely interested in playing this game. 🤔 like... this is definitely not the most hard core thing ever, i can guarantee i've seen worse, but like. I wonder *where* it would scale...

About the whole violence thing, most people who play video games don't play them just for the violence. This is why hatred is largely forgotten while postal 2 is remembered as a cult classic. People who don't play video games see them at a very surface level with no context, which makes them seem like senseless violence for the sake of senseless violence.
Oh right, hatred exists
as a wise Dude once said
"Buttsauce"
The game is an actual masterpiece. Like, actual quality design and gameplay.
I kind of want to go and try to play through this with as little violence as I can, just because it's both such an anthithesis of what the game is about and the devs made it possible.
Many young generations won't remember this national treasure and that makes me sad :(
This was an absolutely PHENOMINAL review with a lot of good takes!
Hey! I just found your channel and love your editing style, especially how you use your cat to portray you, I find it comical. Anyway keep it up :)
"waiting in line" that was the deal breaker for me.

I love how you said “former child stars” as a warning
I would so sign that petition at 6:00.
Keep up the phenomenal work, Charl
We cant have games like this anymore.
I was watching old school comedy movies I watched as a kid like Team America and South Park BLAU and was thinking "this stuff would never fly today"
The whole "if you play violent games you'll be more violent" assumes the human being is way more simple than it actually is
For starters, getting a taste of participating in violence unlike movies where you are just an spectator, give you a clear look to the real consequences which most people don't really pay that much of a mind towards
If you still think that murder is ok after seeing what it is in a closer aproach, then the issue is in you as a person, not in the game, and if anything might help as a diagnosis tool
Kids are more impressionable, yes, but if a game can convince them violence is good, what makes you think a movie or the news themselves won't? that's where parenting has to take charge
It is often smart to show kids bad things about the world when they are ready (including violence) so they can be tough about it more effectively
It's not the same to simply say "don't do drugs"
Than to show the kids the consequences of drugs and then tell them "this is WHY you shouldn't do drugs"
Played Postal 2 hundreds of hours in my childhood.....I REGRET NOTHING
For a large number of people, Postal 2 has become classic because it was discovered in childhood.
Postal Dude actually has 2 weeks of going insane.
Seriously, no study made by serious universities or research group proves that video games actually cause violence so
Yeah people are just bitches because people play games with violence. They say this and then they watch the most fucking violent movie/tv show ever
"Advanced hanging out techniques." Ah yes, something that many people did, *but no one watching this video has done.*
What game is he referring to?
@@buttons551 I dunno, I just caught onto the fact that this is another way of saying wacky wacky bed fun co-op mode.
@@buttons551 it's called subverse from what i reckon, and it's basically a mass-effect porno spoof as was mentioned in the video
(Though I understand that in this particular case, games are a very direct medium due to its interaction.)
The "cause" when it comes to acts of violence could better be traced to issues concerning the individuals who could potentially commit the crime. Instead of the games themselves being the determining factor.
There's also a million other theories at play here like "aging out of crime" paired with how a lot of people who play video games tended to be younger, but I have neither the time now the proper certifications to go fully in depth on all of them.
damn the star wars opening crawl got a yt account

also you forget this game was referenced in a law and order SVU episode when a guy talks about using a cat for a silencer in a video game
more on videogame violence: maybe instead of just looking at eric harris's WADs we can listen to sue klebold's work in understanding her son dylan, who was the other columbine shooter. she has done a lot of work on understanding everything and has spoken and written about it extensively with all profits going toward further research, and she is not of the opinion that videogames were particularly relevant to what happened. shes a badass

i played this when i was like 12, i seriously did not fount it that disturbing, i guess my brain was too undeveloped back then
Videos like this are always interesting to me.
