I have been looking for this program for years. I remember it when I was a kid. The opening music and the loneliness of an empty set. Always felt so melancholy.
Richard Burton(like his contemporary Lee Marvin) always amazed me because even though he stayed drunk most of the time, still found a way to be a great actor.
And a superb natural actress, NOT some airhead bimbo. Stanely Kubrick and John Huston two of the greatest American directors both thought she was essential for key roles in major motion pictures.
"HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS" [Mondays, 9:30pm(et)] was sponsored on alternate weeks by Purex (makers of detergents and cleansers) and Timex {"More people buy TIMEX than any other watch in the world"} in the 1963-'64 season.
This is priceless rare find of a documentary of behind the scenes, on location, about one of the greatest directors, casts , crew(mostly native Mexicans) of one of the finest films ever . Amazing how much money, time and effort was put into the making of the movie version of Tennessee Williams play The Night of the Iguana . One of many questions comes to mind : Did they pay for many miles of electric lines from whatever grid in Mexico to this remote location or did they use gasoline powered generators ? anyone know ? please any and all replies !
@@jakeenan I live very close & can see the movie set from my balcony. The ruins are somewhat ghostly, but totally recognizable. When I see videos like this, the whole movie comes back again. Many people still talk about the movie & in the village of Mismaloya there are still hints & pictures of Richard Burton & Liz Taylor. This movie put Puerto Vallarta on the map.
@@JBorg-fb3un John Huston retired down in Puerto Vallarta, didn't he? Lovely part of the world. You are lucky indeed. I got my own semi-retiring spot, inspired by the movie, but its on the other side of the world and that's another story. I am amazed nobody ever fixed-up the movie-set where tourists could come stay....there must be a valid reason. It is one of my fav movies and I watch it every year. I adore the Maxine character, Shannon too....I believe they saved each other and had a great life down there. And I always wonder what became of the Hannah Jelks character.
@@jakeenan Yes. Huston had several homes in the P.V. area. I actually visited his place in downtown P.V. It's still beautiful with a lot of his original interior designs. He also lived south/east in Las Caletas a short boat ride away. I often walk over to the movie site, but it really gone to ruin. Someone tried to make a go of it by running a restaurant, but it failed. You'll notice in the movie there's a dock where everything was delivered as well as the actors & crew while making the movie. A few years ago that too was removed as it was rotting. It is sad to see. The house on the hill where the movie takes place is still there & I see it everyday, but the area is fenced off & no one can trespass. Where is your little paradise?
If you enjoy this little film check out the other documentary that is in COLOR . I made me wish the film was not B&W: ua-cam.com/video/pvwAo78_w4I/v-deo.html
Ava Gardner's no. 1 toy boy on location topped himself after everybody packed up and left. I got this info from the woman of the American couple who moved into the house she had used. Among other signs of disapproval, a pig was tied to their door and rubbish was thrown in their garden. Gringos had left a sour taste among at least some of the locals.
Que horror de película y que insulto para el gran director, productor, escritor y actor Emilio "Indio Fernández" Icono del cine mexicano salga aquí de cantinero en una cosa tan fea, lo unico bueno es la fotografía del gran Figueroa y los paisajes
Wow. I could watch these all day long. Thank you so much.

Originally telecast on March 2, 1964. The film was released the following August.
I got out of active duty in the Army in late July,1964 & I believe, saw it that month! Sometimes, the Army
got films before their premiere date!
Imagine the days when places like that that hadn't been developed still existed...
I was there in the remnants of the old world and believe me, the 21st century is NAUSEATING.
@Melizma Tea And so began the process of (outwardly) "benign " gentrification .Coming , soon- "the NEW Acapulco".
Thank you for posting this! Been looking for this a long time now.
Mr. Kronick, I am impressed. 👍
RIP Sue Lyon 1946 - 2019
Fabulous peek into the history of this Import Part of Puerto Vallarta history.

Was in our movie theater..had no idea so much work was involved

Ava looked interesting to me
Ava Gardner and Sue Lyon together the life is beatiful

It would have been a trifecta if they got Tampax to kick in...
Thank you!
Thank you.
I've visited the set and area many times...

I should think gasoline powered generators- would’ve been cheaper.
@@roysaxon2619 you're probably right . thanks for the reply
Good people 🙏📖⛪👍🎄🔔. I wonder if the set became part of the town ?
Sadly, the Set is a ghostly ruins today. There are pictures on the Internet. The Town is a more built-up and hip place these days though.

"I doubt that I shall" few others aside from Burton could get away with a lint like that!
Go head Liz! I believe Liz Taylor was there to keep a close watch on her man because of that Sue Lyon.
Absolutely. 💯%
Wrong. Elizabeth was jealous of the devastating beauty of Ava Gardner & her reputation. Sorry internet pedos
Lyon couldn't stand him.
Cilito lindo
Poor quality video. Can't find an online version of the actual movie in high def either.

Is it true that Sue Lyon was chased by a pack of iguanas during the filming of this movie? I hope someone got it on video.
*Not* defrocked.
Disgraced at the very least...
Sue Lyon here revealed as the proto-Elle Fanning.
🤮

The show's other sponsor was, in fact, Timex

No estoy de acuerdo. La obra de Tennessee Williams es magnífica y llena de poesía. Ava Gardner es espectacular en su papel.
Sue Lyon said Burton was repulsive. He was so drunk during their scenes she could smell it across the room, and his bottle breath nearly choked her.
Richard Burton drank alcohol? Elizabeth Taylor drank alcohol? John Huston drank alcohol? Ava Garder drank alcohol? Shocking!!!!
@@esquibelle imagine that. But Burton was such a lush that Lyon nearly gagged.
