Hi Paul and Rebecca, lovely to see you out and about,I live in Swindon and didn`t even realise Devizes had a railway, thanks for opening my eyes on that. looking forward to the next video already.Stay safe.
Lovely to see you two guys out and about again, and enjoying yourselves. Lovely video as always. Gorgeous scenery, too. Thanks, Paul and Rebecca. Cheers for now, Pete.
Thanks for posting. Today Devizes is a town of over 30,000. Crazy that it has no railway. There is a proposal to make a park and ride at Lydeway but that's still several miles out of the town.
Wow, lovely to see Devizes again. Thanks for the tour of the line, it brought back memories. I have walked over that bridge at Pans Lane Halt many times. Thanks Paul and Rebecca.
This brings back memories. I have travelled over the Devizes branch on a diverted West of England express in the latter days of steam on the Western Region. Loved the video. Keep up the good work.
Great video, brilliantly edited, really impressive. Loved Wooton old station, looked beautiful. The picture of the locks was certainly showed the gradient!! Looking forward to the next one.
Brilliant nice to see you too to really well and see you back on track see you in the future and new filming and new railway stories thanks for keeping me amuse with your good stories about the old times good luck in good health and stay safe thanks Jimmy
Oh yes I enjoyed it all right. Stations, beautiful fields and trains, love my trains. That was just fantastic, thanks for taking me along. Please stay safe
Just magic to see you two out and about again. Your faces at the start just summed up you new found freedom that a lot of us are starting to enjoy again. Great vid!!
Great to see you on the devizes branch, didn't quite make it to Holt junction at other end. Never mind brought back lots of memories of living in that area. Well done, look forward to seeing more. Stay safe though!!
I live locally to the west end of this line and only today discovered the embankment and a surviving bridge abutment at Semington. The abutment is on the east side of the road and not easily seen as it’s behind a solid barrier. You can get a better view by scrambling up the embankment on the west side of the road. You can also see the embankment clearly from the driveway to the Air Ambulance Station.
Another fascinating video about a very little-known line. I liked your lockdown video on the Strathspey railway in Scotland and hope you do some more of these but getting out and seeing the real thing is much more satisfying. For over two months I have been doing my daily exercise from my home. But now the lockdown has become increasingly frayed and it is clear that our lords and masters believe that there is one rule for them and another for us. I finally gave up on Bank Holiday Monday and drove to a quieter corner of the Quantocks at the other side of the county where I live, for a different walk. I did think long and hard before I finally picked up the car keys! I shall have a look to see if you have done a video on the Somerset Coal canal as there are quite a number of significant artefacts. Keep exploring and stay safe!
Well done for getting out Tony. I agree it's all a bit shocking really. But whatever is done we still intend to play by the rules for the safety of those around us. Take care.
Lovely to see you both out and about again and in sunny Wiltshire, I live close to Devizes and throughly enjoyed the video, if I had known I would have bought a flask up to you! !! Keep up the great work. Best wishes. Chris.
you certainly had to do a lot of homework on this one. very interesting and loved the scenery.. nice for you in this lovely spring weather.Even I have been out on the railways 4 times in 2 weeks. Lovely jubly.
I was lucky enough to enter the tunnel a few years back, as they do ballistics testing in there, and a friend needed some armoured door plating tested. Good to see you back out and about.
Brilliant Video! loving seeing some of the GWR Class 800s passing by as well! There was something announced about Devizes that it made the first round of the Beeching Reversal Fund that the Railway could be reinstated but via Lydeway, so there could be a Railway at Devizes in the future as long as it passes the next rounds, as for 0:33 I was like that when I went to my local station on the 13th May, all happy and smiling when I returned to my local station, remember walking across the footbridge and just yelled 'I (Bleeping) miss this!'
Enjoyed a visit to Devizes and the canal locks two years back. The Branch from Patney & Chirton was still intact but closed when I first worked on trains between Reading and Westbury from 1965. Likewise The opposite junction at Holt on the Swindon To Westbury line was still obvious when we worked trains that way too and from Taunton, via Trowbridge and Westbury. Wooton Rivers station was also still in tact as was Savernak lower station and the branch to Marlborough.
Loved it, a part of the countryside where I used to boat quite reguarly with freinds. I trust you visited the delights of the Barge at Seend Cleeve. Looking forward to more, thanks.
I live in this area and had the same thought as you when walking from Woodborough through the garden! The golf course is funny. I had no idea there were so many stations in the local area
Great to see you out and about again, Paul and Rebecca. We are still in lockdown in Scotland, but I was out and about on my mountain bike, on my daily exercise, and found a disused railway that I didn't know about. It looks like a long disused colliery line, I'll need to see what I can find out about it. It's always good to see new content from you.
Great stuff guys 😎. I'm missing summer already. We can't wait to be travelling again and visiting your country whenever that will be. Cheers from New Zealand.
hey paul and rebecca , great video and yay freedome lol , i love seeing the old photo's of how the stations looked back in the day , great to see you both out and about again :)
Glad to see you two out and about again! I love that view from on top of that hill, I have nothing like that where I live, it's all flat, and to the north it's just water (Lake Ontario). So that entire line was shut down in 1966, was it really losing so much money that nothing could be done to improve it? Seems a shame, all those villages becoming isolated, all those businesses losing access to their vendors and customers. They all had to go out and buy cars and trucks which meant millions spent on roads, petrol that had to be transported and stored etc. They are just as isolated and the businesses are gone so people move out. Doesn't seem to me that anything was improved?
Great to see you out and about again. Stay Safe 👍 I watched while wearing headphones and noticed old-fashioned LP crackle on the music around 4:30. Not sure if deliberate but it added a nice atmosphere! Thank you 👍🙂
Lovely vid as always. On my lockdown walk I have been intrigued by the old Barry Railway which ran close to where I live. Amazed to scout out the entrance to the mile long Wenvoe tunnel and the old Wenvoe station , which is now a private dwelling. Keep the vids coming.
I also live in the Barry area and used to drive up the Taff Vale a lot for work. So much incredible history. There are disused railways heading north from the cement works at Aberthaw (a very, very early railway, you will maybe remember the old bridge pillars on the St Athan Road near the river which were demolished recently by Griffiths during roadworks?) and the unmistakable Penarth branch from Cogan to Cadoxton, for which the cutting and bridges still exist. Developers in Cosmeston are looking to reopen the railway cutting now as a pathway to Penarth Station. We're privileged to live in an area with such a dense, rich railway history. Just a shame there's not much left running today. Edit - The other thing that's fascinating to me, and it's a shame almost none of it remains, is the sheer size of the Barry and Taff Vale railway yards that ran something like 14 tracks wide between the Docks Offices and Cadoxton station before the junction of the same name. A lot of evidence of the Victorian infrastructure is still lying around the existing two tracks.
in my years of van truck bus and coach driving i am always on lookout 4 old railways canals etc if you ever get the chance check out the barnsley canal that then leads you to royston sheds then your addicted best wishes to both of you stay safe
. . . . and they're back on track!!!! Good to be out and about in the sticks with this excellent weather, so, why the scarf and jacket, not warm enough for you yet!!!!! 😃😃😆 Six vids in the pipeline - can't wait 👍👍
I think you'll find Rebecca is usually in a nest, going by her own channel name. I like how they said they were wearing trousers this time. My first thought was that I must have missed the video that Paul was wearing a skirt in. 😜
Lovely to see you out and about again ticking off the stations. Hope you'll be able to continue doing this and we don't get a second wave which will put us all back to square one!! Whoops, must think positive!!
Almost Patney. You can see the station bridge in the video, which is a right of way. Interesting in that it is the old station bridge, and you can see where the stairs went off to the centre platform blocked off.
The route Paddington - Reading - Newbury - Devizes - Bath - Bristol was the shortest, but by no means the quickest, route between Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads. A number of London to Bristol trains ran daily over the Devizes branch, and in 1959 when these expresses were finally taken off, there were three each way daily. Pans Lane Halt did not close with the other stations on the line. It was built solely to serve an isolation hospital outside Devizes and closed when the hospital closed in 1941.
I hadn't realised there used to be so many stations on the mainline between Pewsey and Westbury, that's a long bit of track, albeit through a very rural area, with no stations now!
Another great video! I've stopped at Woodborough Loop a couple of times for water on a steam railtour. Devizes looks nice, seems a shame its not a got a railway station anymore as it's not exactly a tiny place.
Wonderful to have you back outside. Great film - very interesting. Looking forward to the next one. Stay safe please - COVID 19 is still very much alive and kicking
Very timely. I gather Devizes may be getting back on the rail network according to an announcement today. I doubt it will be in the same location though.
An interesting fact (possibly the only one) about Patney & Chirton station: It's located on the edge of the village of Patney. When they came to name it, they included the nearby village of Chirton in the name to avoid confusion with Putney in London. A less interesting fact about it: It's about a mile and a half from my house.
Good to see you back on the road again, but the exploring from home was really interesting too. I hope this newfound freedom doesn't interrupt Rebecca's Nest production though.
Hi Paul and Rebecca another enjoyable video did you manage to watch the train link I sent you the train cab ride to Dundee Well done so interesting it’s great to see old lines and new lines coming back Well done Paul in Orpington
I dare not show this to my wife. The only places she has been to for months are (a) hospital car parks and (b) the inside of a few deserted spaces inside the hospital. X-ray and blood test rooms, where a few masked and covered polite and gracious attendants sorted her and sent her on her way. Another exciting hospital event next week. Somehow, your chance to walk through the sunlit open lands is far more appealing. Now, with all the brou-ha-ha about global warming, I wonder if sweeping the infrastructure aside, and not just closing its use till the wind changed, might have been such a wise turn of events
You should try bridgenorth for a town too high for it's railway, tnow closed northern exit from the station used to go right under Hightown, and there is the incline railway connecting hightown and lowtown.Of coure we all know Bridgenorth is the northern terminus of the Severn Valley Railway.
Another great scenic line!Too bad they took down that lovely old Woodborough station in the photo. I like that the tunnel under the Castle was repurposed and being used! Have you or could you do a bit on the Beecham? railroad cuts and any other scale backs that closed lines and stations? Thanks!
Good grief ... that flight of locks ... how many days would it take to get up there?! I thought Bingley was bad with a 3 and then a 5, but that looks like 28 if I've counted right. I would have thought the canal would have been closed before the railway...
Fascinating. To be honest, I don't call Devizes "too high", it's almost on the flat compared to t'Pennines, I'm at 724ft. Would love to see a video on the Ironworks.
Our first explore in what feels like forever. Rest assured we now have 6 more filmed, and there are some really interesting ones to come! Railways, tunnels, canals and more! Subscribe if you haven't done so and smash that notification bell.

Great job. Thanks
Thanks Rinus, back out doors and we love it!
I do love a good cloudscape, and this video is full of them. Thanks Paul and Rebecca.
Look what you two can achieve when left to your own Devizes.
That's better than my one!

Well done - nice to see you've "escaped" from your four-walled-prison to get some well deserved fresh-air and exciting past train-track views!
Glad to see you both back out on the old disused and area's of old halts on today's railways. Thanks for the video!!😎🐓🐓🇬🇧
Thanks Christopher.
Wow, lovely to see Devizes again. Thanks for the tour of the line, it brought back memories. I have walked over that bridge at Pans Lane Halt many times. Thanks Paul and Rebecca.
Thanks Sandra. Quite a nice spot. We weren't expecting to find all the wildflowers

Excellent to see you both out again and thanks for this, I knew nothing about what looks like a fascintating branch line.

Takes about 8 to 10 hours to do.
Fascinating. To be honest, I don't call Devizes "too high", it's almost on the flat compared to t'Pennines, I'm at 724ft. Would love to see a video on the Ironworks.
Very true relative to the rest of the south of England it's not too high but relative to its local geography it's a different story
