    Do you think they showed what OCD really looks like? What other shows should I do?

      It's a bit upsetting that most if the media And even some health professionals misinterpret ocd. Most of the media seems to downplay how stressful and mentally draining can be.

      I love Monk but I don’t feel it truly captures how disabling it is. An inner dialogue explaining why he’s doing those things or even him just expressing his thoughts to others would have been more believable.

      I love the show Monk, he's so funny & I love how you therapized him, great video. I think they showed perfect examples of OCD because some of the things he does I do.

      I already know it’s a bad representation of OCD but a few clips Omoi from Naruto could be entertaining.

    I LOVE the show Monk. Some people with OCD find it offensive but I have OCD and find the humor therapeutic.

    • @kaylak456
      @kaylak456 Місяць тому +4

      You said my thoughts exactly!
      I'm so confused by people who are offended by it, because of course his behavior is exaggerated and dramatic -- it's a TV show! I don't relate to everything about his OCD portrayal, but I don't expect to. If it was too accurate, then the show would be just boring and depressing (not a comedy). 😂😅
      I started watching Monk only ~1 year ago, and happened to get diagnosed when I was a few seasons in. I haven't finished it yet, but it is still one of my favorite shows, because even well before my diagnosis, I immediately related to Monk and felt seen in such an acute way that no other media had made me feel. I find it so humourously humbling and (like you said) therapeutic! 😂

    I think they kiiiinda got it right. His OCD seems absolutely crippling and severe. They probably would have sold me on him having OCD if they had an inner monologue of his thoughts instead of him just being awkward every other minute.

      Very true. I'd love to see what's actually going on in his head. This way we could distinguish OCD vs OCPD.

      @@ocdandanxietyplease make a video on correlation between caffeine and OCD. I have observed on myself that my ocd goes haywire when I consume any caffeineted beverage,

      Would you say that it‘s common someone has all those obsessions at once? To me it always seemed odd that they basically threw a bunch of ocd themes at this character. I can only speak from my experience, but when I was inpatient, all my fellow patients worked on one, two themes at the most.
      Although in the examples you pulled, there are of course a lot of themes missing.

    The stove thing reminded me of a time long ago when I was talking to some friends about double checking things, and the hair straightener came up. I asked them if they had to do things a certain way so that they can remember they unplugged it and everyone said "no" and I said "Oh, I have to unplug it, hold the plug in my hand and say out loud 'the straightener is unplugged, I unplugged it, here is the cord' and then point at the outlet, and usually I peek into the room one more time just to be sure". And everyone was silent and somehow I still had not figured out that I had OCD at that point lol ^^"

    A very accurate portrayal of OCD I found in Friends where a group patient says something like "I have to switch the light on and off 7 times or my family will die a painful death." Though, it is played for laughs

    I used to love this show. Even though I've never had contamination OCD, I just identified with him so much. Then I learned about autism. I'm pretty sure he is also autistic, whether the writers meant to portray him that way or not. If you watch several episodes of the show, it becomes pretty obvious. Also keep in mind this show was made before there was any kind of real OCD treatment. Even now, it can be extremely difficult to find a therapist who has even heard of ERP, let alone knows how to do it.

    I really liked this video! I've never seen Monk, but my husband has seen some of it, and he said that apparently there's an episode later in the series that reveals that Adrian is doing a lot of the compulsions because of something bad that happened. So that sounds possibly like Real OCD? If so, I would love to see a follow-up video where you review that episode specifically and talk about that. Love your channel!

      His wife died in mysterious circumstances. As a cop, he spent years trying to solve her death, but the his emotional trauma was severe. Hence, his obsessions are only focused on his wife’s death.

      I’ve seen most of the show, but it’s been a little while since the last time I did. I think he had compulsions before her death but it got worse afterwards. I think it’s what led to him being kicked off of being a detective.

      Rewatching Monk now. He was always OCD but Trudy dying was so traumatic that it really kicked up a lot of his OCD triggers and compulsions. His brother is also OCD, and agoraphobic.

    I watched some Monk on TV when I was a kid! It never really struck me as anything special back then, but I was also dead convinced that I didn't have OCD until a couple of years ago despite dealing with it nearly my entire life.
    As for suggestions: It's an anime but I would be interesting in seeing your thoughts on Death the Kid from Soul Eater's OCD portrayal. I don't remember it being particularly good, and it was played off as a gag most of the show, but at the very least I could see it being an interesting, over-the-top, bad example. He is fixated on symmetry, from what I remember.

    Yes, and Monk has OCD, and I could add a few behaviors to it.
    I like your videos. Maybe you could give me some advice and encouragement. Today is my birthday, but it doesn't seem like it is, because today I have to finally make a decision as to what used car at a dealership I want to buy. I HAVE to leave that dealership today with another car, because the car I have been driving for 17 years and has 220,000 miles on it is about to fall apart in the street, and I just can't afford to spend any more money having it fixed.
    I have terrible OCD, and my biggest fear is that I am going to leave something behind when I leave an area. I over-check tables, chairs, the floor, etc. when I leave a restaurant, not to mention having to make sure of information I have been given, etc.
    Today, I am so afraid that I am going to leave something in my old car when I leave my car at the dealership as a trade-in. Even if I check my car five times to make sure everything is out, I'm sure I will still drive away in the "new" car and be forever tormented that something I want is still in the old car.
    Any advice ???

    • @ocdandanxiety
      @ocdandanxiety  4 місяці тому +2

      HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🥳 Congrats on looking at a new car. Most of the time people have to make a commitment to not "check" again and accept that if there is a problem, they will solve it when the time comes. It's practicing ERP in other areas. I often have people sit somewhere, stand up and leave. Risking they left something. Feel the distress and use the right responses. "maybe I did, maybe I didn't." "I sure hope I leave something in my car. That'd be so fun to problem solve that."

      I’m the same way about acting like I love the feeling. I find the uncertainty/maybe statements more effective. Maybe I am going to feel this way forever. Maybe I am contaminated now, it’s never going to go away, and I’ll contaminate everyone I meet. Maybe I did leave the stove on and my house is going to burn down. After doing it consistently every time the obsessive thought comes up, my brain eventually just gets bored of that line of thinking. I’m still working on some things, but I’m not nearly as consumed by some of the obsessive thoughts that used to take hours of my life.
