  • Paul Spriggs:
"As an architectural student I wrote a dissertation on Ernest Gimson, a disciple of William Morris who lived and worked at Sapperton near Cirencester around a century ago. His work was already familiar to me through a family connection. His chairs interested me; I thought of them as a starting point for my own designs, for which I was sure there was a market. I never set out to copy his work, but rather to absorb the spirit of it and make my own stamp, with chairs and other furniture.
I have been a maker for over 30 years now and never regretted the change from architecture. I work in English hardwoods, ash and oak mainly, and harvest rushes for the chairs myself. In design and execution I try to apply that attention to detail that makes the work that bit special.
My work has been featured in various publications. It is mostly domestic, although I have helped furnish various churches, a cathedral and museums."

Hooray another wonderful true craftsman who is devoted to detail, quality, design , functionality and his training and the Guild is a wonderful combination.. i adore this series. Its so encouraging that Guilds strive to maintain these vanishing skills….

It’s great to be able to see great craftsmen like this working in their shops. Such videos are highly inspirational.

Gosh, it sure would have been nice to really watch Paul wrapping the cane on the chair instead of the darting camera work.

Great video and very nice chairs indeed. Would love to be able to make chairs like that.

Very nice process from start to finish with everything 'seeming" so simple , even the finished chair looks so simple , I imagine it takes many years of practice to get that simple clean look!?!? : )

Really cool but fark the music is just plain annoying.

Two issues. Paul must expend as much time on the covering of the seats as the making of the chair themselves. I suspect he likes one as much as the other, hope compensation is acceptable. I tried steaming green walnut but had no success so I boiled the wood instead. That worked quite well.

The camera work makes these videos unwatchable. Please read and consider the multiple comments addressing this issue.

I'd like to know what it was that Brandt (last name?) said that so influenced him. I've never heard of Brandt and can't seem to find anything about him...

Such terrible, annoying and aren’t-I-clever camerawork spoils what should be a delightful film watching a true master at work. This whole series suffers from this student-like approach - such a shame.
