  • Sinbad the Sailor (1935)
Producer: Ub Iwerks. Director: Ub Iwerks.
Special thanks to Blackhawk Films Collection.
Ub Iwerks, the “hand behind the mouse,” designer and animator of Mickey Mouse, parted with Walt Disney in 1930 to create cartoon series for MGM, and later assorted shorts for other studios, during that decade. Between 1934 and 1936, Iwerks studio produced a series of “ComiColor” musical cartoon shorts for distributor Pat Powers. Each one was of a different subject - usually a fairy tale, nursery rhyme or a legendary storybook character - not unlike Disney’s “Silly Symphonies.” Iwerks’ crew included famous animators such as Grim Natwick and Frank Tashlin, as well as musical scores by Carl Stalling. This particular short is an action-packed adventure, with lots of thrilling adventures and visual delights. It also makes great use of a limited color palette provided by the two-color Cinecolor process.

Wowza this is incredible. The colorization and music 🎶 are magnificent. My Grandpa Bob Effros performed trumpet with Carl Stallings Orchestra. Thank you Jerry Beck and UCLA.

I love the luscious Cinecolor pallette in this cartoon and am pleased that an amount of gray-greens and olive greens come through.
That being said, was this restored from a composite print? I ask because there are quite a few alignment issues. If it was from BW seperations, much of this could be fixed digitally (though not "easily!"). Maybe this was a photochemical restoration from the best surviving elements. In any case, thanks for the upload! Nice to see some Iwerks in HD.

I can't help wondering if this cartoon wasn't a one-shot, but a pilot for a Sinbad series. Iwerks tried doing it with the Regular Fellas comic strip, but it never took off.
