PARCHMENT VS WAX PAPER!! KNOWLEDGE, TIPS AND TRICKS!!

- Today I am sharing some great information regarding the burning question of parchment paper vs. wax paper. Are they the same? Are they different? Can they be used interchangeably or should they have a designated spot in your kitchen repertoire? We are going to cover all of those questions that I have received from many of you over the years as well as offer up some great tips, tricks and hacks that you can use in your own life using both of these products.
The "get down to business" answer here is no, parchment and wax paper are not the same. While they can both be used to collect messes, avoid a lot of clean up and help with certain tasks, they are not identical in those tasks.
Parchment paper has been around for centuries. However it only gained popularity in the kitchen beginning in the mid 1800s when a couple of fine French gentlemen developed a way to coat paper with a substance that would allow the paper to become greaseproof and essentially non-stick. This was the birth of what could be referred to as "kitchen paper" and has evolved into what we know today in the form of parchment paper on rolls and individual sheets that help us bake great goodies without worry of removing them from the pan. Parchment can be used without problems, in the oven up to 450 degrees and can be used to line cake pans, brownie pans and to make dishes such as fish, chicken and vegetable en papillote or in a bundle.
Wax paper is what our grandmother's used to wrap leftovers and pack brown bag lunches before plastic bags came on the scene. Even my own mother used it to wrap sandwiches for my lunch when I was small. Wax paper was laid out in long swaths upon the table at Christmas when homemade chocolates and other treats were dipped and awaited drying time. Wax paper has it;s place, but one place it should never go is in the oven. This kitchen paper is coated on both sides with wax which will and can melt depending on the heat intensity and you can run the risk of this igniting under certain conditions. To be safe, this should never be used to line cake pans, or cookie sheets as it can be very unsafe.
Wax paper can be used to slick up your can opener, shine up your chrome fixtures and even slick up your metal or plastic sliding board! You can use parchment to line cookie and cake pans, make cornets or cones to pipe icing, old school, in place of a disposable piping bag or use it in a myriad of ways in the craft room! Parchment or wax paper can be used to line the table in place of newspaper when crafting, painting or doing any sort of messy work and can even be an aid when rebuilding equipment or cleaning your Winchester. A clean work surface is the best place to start and these tools are a great way to do that.
I hope this was informative and helpful and maybe even a little fun for you to learn about the differences in both these kitchen staples. Use one or both depending on your needs!
Happy Eating!

We never heard of parchment paper growing up--I would've loved it for making cookies back then! We had lots of uses for waxed paper: wrapping sandwiches or fruitcake, lining a cookie tin, pressing leaves (made them shiny), coating a closet rod (hangers glided better), rolling out pie dough, sifting dry ingredients like flour for cakes (& you could pick it up to dump in mixing bowl), grating cheese on it or even wrapping a block of cheese in it for storage. We loved it for crafts, too. I can't live without either one these days.
Thanks for reminding me about rolling out dough. It's been a while since I've baked a pie. Used to enjoy doing them until age brought up diet issues. I still use wax paper for a bunch of other things.
Parchment paper is my "GO TO" helper for safely transferring my homemade fresh pizza to
& from the pizza peel & the hot oven pizza stone.
Thanks for the knowledge, tips & tricks.
I've been looking for this answer for YEARS! I'm now a subscriber! Thanks for taking the time to explain, I really appreciate it!
Every field trip I went on as a child my food was wrapped in wax paper, but even more special was that it was one of the rare times I got to have a soda pop! My Momma would buy me a can of foot beer and put it in the back of the bottom of our old Frigidaire, and wrap it in aluminum foil so it would stay cold in my paper brown sack until lunch. Went great with my pb and homemade jelly, carrot sticks and her homemade chocolate chip cookies!! So wonderfull!!!
Me: is hear to see which way is up on my wax paper so i can put my pizza dough in the oven.
”wax paper isnt for use in the oven”
me: 👁👄👁
I remember the parchment wrapped sandwich, mine was always accompanied by the flavor of esty lauder perfume my mom would use every day before making our lunches 😶. God bless mom's! Thank you Noreen, you're a well of information.
My mom used Este Lauder also. She would use everything they made, lol. Bath oil, body lotion and perfume. My brother always said the bathroom was going to blow up, it was so strong. Thanks for giving me a happy memory of my mom. She’s been gone almost eight years. ♥️
I've got to try the trick with can opener! I just wish I still had the the dexterity and strength. Maybe this will help. Thanks for sharing.
I’m with you on the hand over electric can opener.
i always line a cake pan with waxed paper (so did mom and every woman in the western world) and nothing caught fire. of course, you bake a cake at only 350 unless you want a 9x13 briquette.
My mom did and I do too but what I think Noreen meant was not having the wax paper “out in the open” in the oven. I believe having it covered with cake batter is OK. I sure hope so because it’s been done in my family for four generations now that I know of!
teresa moon i understand where noreen was coming from because wax paper out in the open is not like parchment paper, wax paper will actually brown, and crisp in an oven so if enough heat is applied it may actually catch fire. I know wax paper is used in hospital kitchens for microwaves as well. However i prefer wax paper for wrapping sandwiches , wrapping cheese especially.
Thank you so much for this comment!!!! You saved me a trip to the store 🤣
I have had wax paper catch fire in my toaster oven. It was just lining a sheet and some was in the open air of the oven.
Seriously, very good information!
The wax paper is the most delicate tool that I know of that is the closest tool used in archery for tuning of arrow flight being shot off the bow , the delicacy of the paper and wax can direct information about adjustments are needed to determine arrow adjustments for getting the fligh like a bullet, all those creases, it's kinda like micro tuning
Awesome tips! Thank you. 😊
I've recently used parchment paper on top of my cutting board when peeling & cutting fruits/veggies. Clean up is soooooo much easier. I just crumble it and throw it out afterwards.
I've found a new trick with parchment paper, you can get it wet and it helps to make it more pliable. Wrapping up a loaf of leftover bread in wet parchment paper also helps to steam/freshen a dry loaf.
Yes, my Mm wrapped everything in our lunch with wax paper. We also put it in the bottom of the round cake pans and the bread pans when she made minced meat fruit cakes.
Mom wrapped my sandwiches in wax paper! Also used in the bottom of cake pans.
The problem with regular baking paper that you’ll find at the supermarket is that it’s packed with a number of toxins that make it perform the way it does. Some of these are:
Bleach and Dioxins.
8:01 No one got her pun?? " TO WRAP THINGS UP" 🤣🤣🤣.. i don't think she even noticed🤣🤣
Thank U so much! So instructive for newbie like me 😀
I don't own an electric can opener either. Most used version is a safety side open can opener that allows cans & lids to be reused for other projects. I keep waxed paper in my shop to protect surfaces from paint, stains, glue, and oils. Good, especially, when working with melted wax. Have used it with painter's tape to mask areas that won't be painted. Wax paper is a good tinder to help start fires. Saving paper that has been slighty used for other purposes to start fires is a good way to recycle same.
It can also be used as a shelf liner, especially with things that can get messy, such as a syrup bottle. Or when there's the potential for cans to rust (canned fruit!). That mess is hard to clean up.
Parchment paper is my go-to for lining sheet pans for baking spaghetti squash, for example. It also makes good pattern paper for all sorts of projects from sewing walker bags to intricate work on a scroll saw.
Thank you for sharing all the ways you make life better by using these papers.
I forgot about the wax paper/slide trick. Thx for the memories! I use a piece of parchment paper to line my bread pans (length wise). Works great to help get bread out easily.
The first time I saw parchment made into a circle that way was watching The French Chef with Julia Child. (Genius). I line my potsticker frying pan with parchment for super easy cleanup (Just make the circle slightly larger than the pan base so the oil doesn't leak underneath the parchment paper).
Wonderful video and Thanks for sharing all the tricks and tips I never thought of.
I did the same with wax paper on the slide when I was a kid. If Mom had some extra paraffin, we would rub it on the runners of our sleds. If no paraffin, she'd give us a ball of waxed paper. Worked great! We used it for arts and crafts, too.
Loved the ice cream tip!
I wish i had known this a week ago. I thought they were the same and used wax paper when making brownies for a local event. Luckily they didn't catch fire, but there was definitely some burning as it seemingly fused the pastry to the pan.
l managed to get it out with a knife, but the results ended up being more brownie bars than anything. 😭
OMG! HOW PERFECT ARE THEE!!!😃 Love how you make everything simple. A 👍 and newly subscribed! And that’s JusA_SliceOf_SweetPotatoPie
Thanks for the information. I always used waxed paper to line my cake pans. O but I will never do it again😳
wax paper is great for arts and crafts , you can use it between sketch book drawings, or mixing acrylic paints without having to clean your palette !
You are a FINE TEACHER....thanks for sharing. I learned a lot.
The last time I made cookies, I made the mistake of lining my cookie sheets with wax paper as I didn't have parchment paper and thought they were the same thing. Filled my apartment with smoke to the point that it set my fire alarms. Thank God the wax paper didn't ignite. Definitely going to invest in some parchment paper. Learn from my mistake, people! Do NOT put wax paper in the oven!
Great video! I just learned a new way to line my cake pans! Thanks sweet lady!
Just used wax paper in my Dutch oven today in my oven of 450 for an hour. 😅
Thanks a lot from Kyiv, Ukraine. A really didn't know the deference between them. But felt that there's some for sure. )
Wax paper can withstand the freezer. Use it for meat product wrapping in the freezer. This way meat can be separate. Parchment is for the oven and withstand heat. Use for cooking.
I had no idea, thanks!
I have a small stockpile of parchment paper because I use it all the time when baking! Wax paper is something I rarely keep on hand.
I’m gonna try baking with wax paper tonight! (It was cheaper, wish me luck!)
SUPER COOL
Yes and sandwiches wrapped in wax paper are much better tasting there is something that allows the bread to stay fluffy and not soggy it allows the flavor of the sandwich filling to permeate the bread without liquifying the dressing and making a smashed mess...my kids taste the difference and until you try it dont knock it.
Tamara Kennedy also wrapping cheese, especially when my mom would buy those entire rounds of gouda from costco, it sealed in and made the cheese last for months on end, in the fridge.
Danny P good to know. Now I have to try that.
I just love your channel you dont miss anything..
I remember using a balled up sheet of wax paper and rubbing the bottom of the sled runners, and later the bottom the "New" aluminum snow saucers all over.. Yowza! What a difference! Results were not only speed, but distance! From N.H. Patricia 👵🏻🤗😳😆😉
AWESOME!!
Yes! my sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper until the alligator baggie with a twist tie replace it.
@KnittyT , I still love a good old fashioned twist tie baggie for certain things.😉
Great information. Thank you.
yes and you dont know what the "thermal difference" would be from one section to the next, that anyone would use
My grandmother used wax paper and I do too for ginger bread
Good tip on can opener thanks Noreen!
Thanks for this. I was about to use wax paper instead of parchment paper to make cupcake liners. So I was about to put wax paper in the oven and you saved me from potentially making my cupcakes toxic or causing a fire
…I don’t want to say that I subscribed because of this video, but I did. I kept watching other videos after this and I’m hooked. I posted this either as a warning; or encouragement.
Essentially, I really appreciate and like this channel and hope that others will subscribe because I know for i fact that it produces accurate and good content
We used to wax our slide too when we were kids.
I'm glad I came here before I used my wax paper in my oven, thanks!!
Thanks for the info
I love the ones you can buy that are precut. So much quicker. Thanks for the tips.
I use a TON of parchment!! My Sam's club has been out of it for the past 8 months!! They have the best price for it. Christmas came early for me when they finally got some in last week! I was literally jumping up and down in excitement. If that wasn't embarrassing enough for my 10yr old daughter I took a selfie holding the rolls like a new born baby LOL
I buy mine from a restaurant supply in a box of 1000 sheets for around $35.00
@@noreenskitchenchannel Thanks! I'll have to look in to that
I learned that Wax paper and Parchment are different the hard way after putting in cauliflower pizza with wax paper in the oven and it came out beautiful but completely stuck...sigh!
same here on the can opener!
Great tips Noreen, thank you :-)
Spray slide with can furniture polish works too to.
Thank you. I always wondered this.
OMG, I just finished baking some cookies using wax paper. Never again, thanks 😳
funny Heather at Kneady just started talking about doing a video on this the other day !
People have something other than a hand can opener? I don't know if the wax paper would work on modern plastic slides anymore.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks love this video
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you👍👍💗💗💗💗💗👍👍
I was just about to put wax paper in the oven,.
I simply loved this video! Thank you..... never knew the difference between them..... only now did I find this video because I just baked a vegetable pie with wax paper and it stuck completely to the pie...... :-( Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! I hope I can find parchment paper in my country!
Parchment is also known as grease proof paper in some countries
I live in Ukraine, we have it as silicon paper in Metro Cash & Carry, Wax is here as well.
Sometimes it's also called baking paper or baking parchment.
Thanks for the tips ❤️
Thanks 😊 👍👍👍👍👍
My royal icing transfers keeps sticking to the parchment paper is there a reason for that? Also should I use a little shortening on the parchment paper before piping the decoration?
I have zero idea. I have never done or used a royal icing transfer. Sorry I could not be more help.
@@noreenskitchenchannel no worries.... Thank you
I've never done royal icing transfers, but as far as I know, the icing is chilled, so maybe you need to chill it longer?
Thanks the info
Wax paper cannot be used on Sublimation, RIGHT???
I know nothing about sublimation transfer. So I cannot comment to that regard.
I needed this video
well now I’m pretty sure my fiancé has accidentally melted wax into our oven cooked food for the last 5 years so it’s no wonder I’m chronically sick but hey thank you for posting this video lmao
also you scared the heck out of me yelling like that in the beginning dang sister!
never mind on the yelling part my volume was just too high and I am stupid
I am not yelling. You can always turn down the volume
@@noreenskitchenchannel I know!! That’s what my second comment said lol
I’m very soft spoken so it just threw me off my b!
I did not see your other reply. For some reason the Gods of People YT blocked it. Lol.
so thats what i made wrong.. i cannot find parchment paper at the grocery store.. and i used wax paper.. LOL.. i put it in the oven lol..
it is my first time to bake and i though why is it not easy to remove.
Idk who told me these were the same. Now I know better
Can I use wax paper in a steamer
I do not recommend that. The wax still melts at a fairly low temperature. Wax paper is not really designed to withstand any type of heat. Parchment paper is impregnated with food grade silicone and can handle the heat. Best to stick with parchment anytime you are applying heat.
oh thank gosh i searched this up first,i was going to put wax paper for my cookies
please just say the difference between the papers
Thanks 2024🎉
I learned that wax paper is not good in the oven the hard way the stink is awful.
So that's why
There is no possibility that i used wax paper for cookies and then the oven started smoking and the cookies got stuck to wax paper... that's would be crazy 😅
👍
Works really well on slide, BUT, don't rub the side rails, oops. Peace.
wish you told me this before 😳
Lol what i say is parchment is oven wax is for printer
No wonder. I didn't know! How embarrassing... 🤭
Good info! Your the craftiest!
