On the rear of the CD unit there appears to be an XLR - what might that be used for? I'm just now getting back into Hi-Fi audio (been away from most higher end since the late 80's). Great information on this pair - thank you for the overview!
Thank you! The XLR output is a AES/EBU digital output used a lot in professional audio. S/PDIF and optical via Toslink are more used in home audio and are also included. Don't feel like you need to use the XLR digital output in order to get the best output, both the S/PDIF and Optical connections will do a very good job!
The CD does sound good and is great value at £699, however the DAC inside the 4040A is better quality, which is unusual to see in a CD/Amp combination! The upside of this is that anything you connect digitally to the amp is going to sound great as a result rather than theoretically having to add connections to the CD player for the best performance or have the CD player be better than the other digital sources of this system.
