  • Gerda Weissman Klein was only a teenager when Nazis invaded Poland and she was separated from her family and sent to a concentration camp. After being liberated by American troops, Weissman Klein spent her life keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive, eventually being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Sunday TODAY’s Willie Geist remembers a life well lived.

I just found out that my hero, Gerda Klein, has passed. What an inspiration to mankind. Gerda & Kurt's love story is unforgettable. She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, and the family she lost in the Shoah. If you have not read Gerda's book, or watched her testimony, you absolutely must. Her legacy will live on. Blessings of love & comfort to the Klein family.

I found out today that Mrs. Klein died last year. I just sent a donation this morning to her charity (Citizenship Counts) and was looking her up on Google to see what she was up to. So sad....but she is with her husband, Kurt, her parents and brother, and friends like Ilse, now. RIP, dear lady.

Ohh, I felt very sad to read that Gerda Klein is no more.
What an amazing, unbelievable survival she exerienced.
Gerda went through terrible torcher at the hands of the Nazis.
Her dark years ended and bright rays of hope and joy entered her life with liberation at the hands of young American soldier and her saviour Kurt Klein!!They fell in love and were married later.
Happy that Gerda is now reunited with her husband Kurt in heaven.
    RIP Klein and Gerda.

Gerda Weissman Klein thank you very much for all your speaking on the holocaust thru your interviews, videos and book(s). You are an example of someone who never gave up with things got so bad and somehow you made it thru and went on to thrive.

Oh my goodness,I remember when she made a speech at the Oscars years ago,I was so enamored of her .
I will never forget my first experience with the Holocaust,I was in the fifth grade ,we were in the multi purpose room ,then the lights went out and the film started to roll,I’m now 73 ,I will never forget what I saw that day.
Years later I would visit the Simon Weinsenthal museum in Los Angeles with a group of my colleagues at the beg of the tour we were handed a plastic card which we carried throughout the tour ,and the end of of the tour we were asked to place the card in a machine and a paper with the story of the person who’s name was on the card ,I still have it to this day ,afterward we had the privilege of meeting a beautiful, noble woman a Holocaust survivor ,she showed us the tattoo on her wrist,I will never forget her or that day ,and to think that some still think that the Holocaust was a hoax RIP sweet woman RIP .

The greatest revenge is living a full life after trauma. Put those things behind you while never forgetting and living on.
