Well explained Arch ed, as fellow Architect we need to inform our client that it does not mean that if the structure is aesthetically beautiful means it is a good design. Architecture is a science and Art there are scientific reasons in every detail that we put into our design. please create more informative videos like these!

Hay, salamat Lord! Nakatagpo din ako ng Pinoy Architect who espouses Tropical Filipino architectural design. I have long been following Design Seed Malaysia, and have been in awe of Malaysian and Singaporean architects who seem more enlightened in terms of incorporating the elements of culture, climate & history (e.g., the Kampong houses) in their architectural designs. Iniisip ko, after Mañosa, why haven't I heard more Filipino architects promoting Filipino art, design, culture & our local climate in architecture? You are the answer to my search, Architect Ed. Excited to learn more from you! (Subscribed, notified & liked. 😂)

There are Architects who loves tropical designs like Ar. Conrad Onglao, Ar. Marvin Marianas,Cebu, Ar. Ronnie Yumang and others. It's just that nowadays as per Ar. Ed mentioned- few Architects have a design visions on how to be with Nature or live with Nature.

Looking at the events in Cebu after typhoon Odette, where many parts of the city is without water, it is so important to really consider rain water collection. We cannot depend on government to fix essential structures as quickly as we would like or even the private companies charged with maintaining our water and electric grid. It's really important for disaster prone areas to develop self-sustainability.

For example, paano ma apply Ang tropical architecture principles sa lot na 5m x 15 meters or 75 sqm sa neighborhood na meron Kang katabi? Two meters setback front and back. Fixed orientation. Dapat nga these basic concepts must be part of our early education coz it has a direct profound impact to our way of life. I hope the architectural community will also make a massive education campaign about these basic sustainable principles. This basic knowledge should be part of being a Flipino. The government and its friend-corporations are obviously not interested with these ideas for its not beneficial for them.

Sa wakas Architect at meron nag discuss tungkol sa design na nababagay sa isang tropical area kasama na ang tamang orientation ng isang bahay para ma maximize ang pagiwas or paggamit sa sunlight at shades para maiwasan or magamit and natural lighting at source of heat, hindi yung nakiki uso lang sa design. Not to be negative about sa mga designs ngayon. I am not an Architect, I simply like designs na gumagamit ng practicality, innovation at ginagamit ang mga available na materials without causing hazard sa paligid at minimized if not walang sinisira sa terrain. I'm a big fan of genius plumbing and drainage system, pati na rin sa magandang air flow sa bawat area ng bahay. One day I wish to use my gained knowledge para marenovate ang old house namin dito sa Benguet province.

I would be curious to see how passive cooling is designed in cities given with presumably existing concrete buildings around. I am also curious about how this style translate to multifamily homes in urban environments. The examples in the video seem to single family homes that are not in an urban environment. I would also like to see what modern tropical would look like for low-income housing.

I live in Metro Manila all my life but our old house looked and felt like you're in the countryside. It was like the 60's version of a bahay-na-bato with jalousies. Because we're the only ones living in manila, we used to host all relatives and sometimes their other relatives so we got a lot of people staying for weeks or months, and ventilation was never a problem. Passive cooling was made possible by my parents and grandparents who all have green thumbs, so we got plants all over. Our neighbors jokingly call our house a jungle, lol

Hi architect it’s so refreshing to find a professional architect that recognise what is the best for our country. This idea is to consider places susceptible to get flooded, which is needed t (I think) will you be able to design a house convert to an arc but anchored ? When the typhoon comes? I have attended several building seminars and it’s really interesting. I hope you will able to design a housing project using our resources that we have in the philippines to build houses that are appropriate for our climate. We need to educate our people, that it’s not only aesthetic but with purpose. Unfortunately some people no judgement here ,tend to showcase their house as they come from abroad they have to show case their houses However why not make a report or a sustainable housing project( maybe you already did) specially flooding area like what they do in Amsterdam they live surrounded with water. Cheers D

Especially if you consider building a beachfront or an overlooking house on the top of the mountain. House is a personal choice. I wouldn't criticize someone for choosing what they want but I understand your point. As the saying goes "If you can buy a Ferrari you shouldn't worry about gas mileage." I don't think people owning these type of houses are too worried about their AC bill.

Architect Ed, thank you sa video mo. Thermal mass at bad air flow any mga very common na problema sa pinas. Dahil sa concrete blocks Ang basic materials na ginagamit at majority NG designs ay pinipilit nila ang western architecture para sa tropical site.
    Thank you again

Totally agree ako sa mga ideas mo pero most of the designs leaning towards tropical architecture is susceptible to damage pag dating ng bagyo dahil sa shape nito na parang layag ng bangka. But kung matibay naman ang materials at design ay ok naman ciguro. Just a thought. I like your ideas Bro. Thanks.

I agree but I think this video should be addressed to your fellow architects, not to the clients and they should provide a professional and sound advise no matter what design the client wants, I’m sure architects know these already. UAAP should do something serious about this too.

Thank you very much Architect Ed for that very informative and practical information. Watching all the way from San Francisco, California. I will definitely consider all the science you have mentioned when I will have to construct my dream house in Batangas. By the way architect, would you consider wood cladding as a good source of insulation for concrete walls? Thanks very much and would appreciate greatly your response.

The problem with humanity is a narrow minded set people.
They always look for alternative way to make suffering a little less than finding the way to STOP suffering. For instance our food sources: Natural grown food is diminishing from pestilence and natural disasters. Instead of finding a way to stop famine, they have to go by engineered food or use synthetic agricultural products without thinking the negative impact of it in the lives of the people. Another example is refrigerator. The people saw that food rots in just a few hours for laying in the room temperature, they had to invent refrigerator. They did the same thing with air-conditioner unit. Weather temperature in summer times became unbearable. People are embracing their problems to their bosom instead of asking their Creator why things are happening to them.
You showed them different designs of houses which you might think it will alleviate their problems, but I see that these designs cannot stand in floods and typhoons. Remember that house is like an investment. People work hard to save money for it in many years. If you use panel for walls, hurricane, flood or typhoon comes and sweep away these houses away to nothing. Concrete may be warm, but there is an alternative for it. High ceilings and wider windows can help cool off the house in summer times. I would use concrete for walls. Another things that every home builder needs to know, anything made of natural stays longer than the synthetic one. Why do you think material made of natural ingredients is the best product to use? There is a God, our Creator, and His Son Lord Jesus. He is the God of truth. When the people live in lies, they will diminish. If they live in truth, they will live for an everlasting time. The truth that the Lord God is talking about is His laws and commandments. The Law of Moses commands you shall not lend with interest. You shall not tolerate sins of sodomites, honor your father and mother, remember the Sabbath to keep it holy, do not look at man or woman to lust after their beauty. When you transgress any of of His commandments and you are rebuked for it but did not repent, you will come down. It is already been prophesied by the holy prophets the Lord God will destroy both the house and the one who builds it.
    Ezekiel 13
Therefore thus says the Lord God: “I will cause a stormy wind to break forth in My fury; and there shall be a flooding rain in My anger, and great hailstones in fury to consume it. So I will break down the wall you have plastered with untempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be uncovered; it will fall, and you shall be consumed in the midst of it. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.”
    Matthew 7
But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
Temperature imbalance is the cause of these storms, pestilence, sickness and unstable weather to come and destroy lives. The cause of temperature imbalance is your sins towards God’s Law. The good thing is there is a restoration of all things. Prophecy foretold the Lord God will replace the world with His Kingdom where His people will no longer suffer sickness, weather temperature, famine of natural food and death. When the weather temperature is in the perfect balance, bacteria can not grow nor the wood or metal rot. Natural food can grow abundantly even without farmers. People can rest from endless building and repairs. Life in the Kingdom of God is beautiful, it is all about rest, peace and joy, but you have to be worthy to be able to enter into it. Obedience to the Law of Moses in Christ the Lord, fear of God, love and mercy for poor, using natural materials for building homes and product making and staying away from every sin of the world are what make you worthy.
    Isaiah 1
Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, learn to do good; Seek justice, rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together says the Lord, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
    The Spirit and the bride,
    Daughter of Zion,
    Mount Zion, Heavenly Jerusalem
    Gabriel, angel of the Lord

Isa pa sa napansin ko Architect, karamihan sa mga bahay ngayon puro napapalibutan na ng semento or tiles which is di ako agree, kaya mas lalong mainit, we still need soil, grass and plants sa paligid at kapag umuulan ng malakas may sisipsip parin ng tubig di ganun nagbabaha.

Trully sad na mashado tayo gaya gaya. Whereas our Asian neighbors keep things very original with their own Asian style and heritage.
Also, I really dont get the designs today of "sagad" sa lot. Halos wala nang garden space. And this even goes to large sized lots ah.

Thank you for this very informative video. What type of insulated wall panels would you recommend here? I have not really seen any suitable materials available locally. In NCR insulated sandwich wall panels with EPS in the middle or Polyisocyanurate (PIR) or Polyurathane (PU) seem to be available - sandwiched in between fiber cement board or steel plate.
I have never seen any such panels used in residential construction for exterior walls. I would also be concerned about the fire resistance of the insulation materials, as well as resistance to rats or roach infestation. - Are there specific brands or products which you could recommend that are available nationwide and proven in residential applications?
Close to 95% of newly built middle-class residential homes here use high thermal mass CHB infill walls either with concrete or steel post & beam structure. Sometimes we see fiber cement board used, but without wall insulation.
