Damon Wayans was actually on the 85-86 season of SNL . He got kicked off because he went off script during one of his sketches , including Randy Quaid. Damon played a gay cop which wasn't cool still back then, and Loren Micheal didn't like he was out. Also Damon said he didn't like the environment there he thought they would have more freedom to push the envelope. He also created the character HandyMan during his time there, and they didn't like it. So Kenan talked to Robert Townsend about Damon's idea for an alternative SNL they got the backing from some of the elder black legends of comedy and some non like the smothers Brothers ( actually singing and helping write the music for the Brothers Brothers skit) . Anyway, Damon thought of jim right away he said if they did this, they needed to put Jim in the cast . Damon and Jim were really good friends and did a lot of the same comedy clubs as well as them being in the movie " Earth girls are Easy" together. He also was on Johnny Carson, so back then, that was a star maker for comedy
His impressions are dead on. Jerry Lewis had no sense of humor about it but Jim and Bob Saget were best friends for years after this. Tells you who takes themselves seriously. RIP Bob Saget.
