    I'm going back into the classroom after leaving the profession in 2015. I am excited, nervous, scared, and afraid that I won't do a good job. I've been watching your videos to help!

      You got this! I would be nervous too. But you know you'll be right back into the routine, and it will be like second nature again. Good luck :)

    I look forward to your emails and videos with tips and suggestions. Thank you! I truly believe that having a routine allows me to have better management. I cannot move on until I have full control of the room. I will STOP, march my middle schoolers outside, and Practice! Practice practice!

      You got this! Remember that learning is a journey, and progress may not always be linear. Practice is the key. Celebrate the small victories and improvements along the way.

    You're quickly becoming my fave educational UA-camr since you keep showing you are truly informed and experienced in the content which is made clear w/ your notes about common sense which I've always known so knowing you have similar thoughts is a blessing. 💙When one really thinks it through, the truth is there is no thing as actual common sense since there's numerous and varying cultures/communities/societies etc. w/ different norms and expectations and those have to be taught by numerous people.
    This video is very useful about the content which allows teachers to plan and I'm a realist so I subscribe to the notion of hope for the best but plan for the worst. So, I'm fully aware of the growing number of students not doing what is instructed and still expecting to pass, being verbally belligerent, and getting physical therefore, how do you advise teachers to create routines/procedures and discipline as well as behavior plans with those issues as a baseline?

      Great question. I have worked with extremely challenging students. And they were 17-19-year-olds who did not want to be told what to do. I was also 27 when I started, which presented its own challenges. The method I describe in this video has worked wonders for me. The key is to not move on to anything else until they get the routines and procedures down. In my first year of teaching high school biology, I had to practice coming into the room for 3 days. That is all we did. They finally got it. I did not move onto any lessons until they were meeting my expectations for behavior. I remained calm and kept going. It takes practice for the teacher and the students.
      You have to approach classroom management with the same effort you approach teaching lessons. Without proper classroom management, learning will not take place.

      @@KathleenJasperEdD Niiice answer. 😊 Now you're really gaining my favor since your background has a similarity to mine in that I also started at an alternative high school for students with behavioral issues so I had to utilize the same management strategies you mentioned which has helped me at other schools which are seeing the same kind of issues but from a larger amount of students, so your answer is a confirmation to me about how to manage the behavioral issues many schools are experiencing.
      I'm definitely looking forward to more of your content about these kind of management issues and relative strategies as well as hoping you drop content about how to create scaffolds for long essay question tests for students who struggle with reading and writing composition.

    Hi, I have a question: for esl class is it better to explain procedure in their language? And also write down in thiei notebook in their language maybe? Then DO I have to Model so I do the action?

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  Місяць тому

      Yes, I think procedures should be done in the home language. That is a great question. And yes, modeling is an essential part of the process. You may want to do a handout with the procedures in their home language on one side and English on the other. You want them to fully understand the procedures, so home language is key. Thanks for watching 😊

      Many thanks. For modeling do you mean that I am the one to perform the action a few times and then they do the same, right? And for the ones that don't follow the procedures after modelling what do you andvice in concrete? At first I'm used to praise the good ones but what about the others? Or adhd, SEN students? Do you have any videos about how to deal with them?

    Hello Kathleen, in my elementary school the teacher is the one that go from one classroom to another. What routines do you recommend for that moment when I get to the classroom?

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  Рік тому +1

      You can establish how you want students to act once you walk in and start class. You can practice by walking out and letting them talk to their friends or partners, and then you can walk in and see if they stop. I would definitely employ the “eyes on me” signal. You can do any procedure you want. Think about what you want them to do and then write it all down and practice. Practice, practice, practice 😊
