      "That old guy" is not the shoe in the Stude'. The driver is a much younger fellow wearing a blue tee shirt that can be seen in Stude' introduction starting a generator. The gear he is running utilizes the great low end torque that the Chevy LS3 402 bb puts out.With a 3:37 gear a tiny bit slower in the 1/4 but the Chevelle will leave the Studebaker behind.Even though it was a little detuned that big block was underrated.Hp was rated at lower rpm's.

    • @Zekais
      @Zekais 2 роки тому +1

      @@turdferguson4124 Not Ted Harbit level Studes, but I have had a lot of Studes, and for their displacement, they have killer torque. A helluva lot better torque than a 289 Ford or 283 Chivvie, in my experience.
      My '57 Golden Hawk (factory supercharged like the later R2s) had the ancient Flashomatic and 3.31 gears, but you could make driving in 1st gear a smoke show any time you wanted. VERY puny ports and valves. Great for torque down low, but with a blower they will really run harder than they have a right to. In 1962-63, a production R3 Avanti ran just over 170MPH at Bonneville, as Studebaker, under Andy Granatelli's supervision, set something like 338 production speed records there, and more in '64.
      Ted had worse than his normal R/T, and the Tomato was spinning off the line like crazy.

    The Studebaker Lark's South African history was chequered to the n'th degree. They were assembled in the Eastern Cape and served admirably as awesome South African Police 'chase cars' that could simply not be beaten. They were replaced by Australian built Chevrolets at the end of their extremely distinguished careers, which were extremely well built, dependable, with a myriad of great features, but lacked the 'brute' acceleration and power of the Studebaker. The only vehicles that can lay claim to the title of 'chase car' today are the top of the range BMW's and Golf's in present service. But that's exactly 60 years of motor engineering later!. To all intents and purposes the LEGEND lives on.

    What people don't seem to realize is this. The Chev with it's huge cubes makes gobs of torque. That grants a given off the line advantage. But wait there's more.... By 2/3 the travel down the strip the Chev is all pooped out. No longer accelerating - doing steady state movement.
    The R2 without that initial bang boom torque is accelerating all the way. Stude produced the true early version of a
    " Grand National" coming
    25 years later in vogue as small block forced induction. Stude the leader anywhere from (1953-1957) forward and ahead of the big 3 by 30 plus years. And the 53-4 coupes decades ahead in styling, and the Avanti also decades ahead of the big 3. Studebaker literally DRAGGED the big three into the modern era of performance, styling , braking and much more. Studebaker by itself ended the era of the big 3 barges bathtubs and refridges.

    I’m sure both took advantage of whatever upgrades are permitted but theLark might not be able to handle more compression -- unless higher octane is allowed. Period-correct pump gas ⛽️ in ‘63 was higher than ‘72.

    402 is an SS motor and drive package for a heavy chevy,but heavy chevy was the next up scale model going towards SS!! It could drive as good as an SS it's just a different model!!...In my eyes that Chevelle's always the car for me if it's a 72!!

      Next model up was the Malibu 400.My father ordered his in October 1971.Big block LS3 402.He had ordered it with some special goodies from the dealer.Different heads which upted the compression a bit and a slight bigger cam.....Also had bucket seats horseshoe shifter with console and sweep dash....turbo 400 trans with torque converter.....12 bolt posi/w 3:33 gear.Flat good and stock hubcaps
      ...The ultimate sleeper!.I learned how to drive (and race...lol) in that car......beat everything anybody had on my high school.....miss that car!

    Bet that in 63 the ol guy would run 106 airplane fuel with Nathalene moth balls and that Lark was running 11 on the 1/4 .. he had better reflexes 2

    No way in hell that Chevelle was stock. That's 454 times, not a 396 smog motor.

      A 4:56 rear gear in a 72 Chevelle of any kind wasn't a stock rear gear either!! 4:10 i think was the best a 72 could offer stock!!

      You can see that the smog crap has been removed.That helps a bit.Also re curving the timing and proper tuning of the big quadrajet carb can make a difference.

    SEEMS LIKE THE STUDEBAKER WAS REALLY SLOW GETTING STARTED OR REACTION TIME IS SLOW BUT THAT UGLY THING WILL REALLY FLY ..... CHEVELLE WITH CAST CRANK AND CRAP GUTS RUNNING FASTER THAN SOME L78 CHEVELLES WE'VE SEEN ON THE ZEBRA .... WTF !!!

    • @PatrickjazzguitarBro

      I hear the nodular iron 3.76" crank are good to 600 horses, much better than the plain iron crank. Early oval port heads (I think they are open chamber in 1972) work much better than large rectangular port heads in these RPM ranges which explains the quicker times than the L-78 engines which are closed chamber, btw. That is the reason I don't put my 074 Winters heads onto my 396/402. It's all about the combination of parts.

      @jimmeyer7632 2 роки тому

      @@PatrickjazzguitarBro COME TO THINK OF IT ...
      YOUR RIGHT.... THE L78
      WASN'T AN OPEN CHAMBER HEAD ... AND
      YES OVAL PORT HEADS FLOW BETTER THAN RECTANGULAR HEADS ...
      I ALSO THINK THE OVAL HEADS PRODUCED MORE TORQUE ... YES IT DOES ALL BOIL DOWN TO THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF PARTS ....

    Any R2/R3 Studebaker...don't mess with them. A 12 second 1/4 mile in the early 60s..from some way overpriced and ugly car. Perfection. There is no better sleeper. If you put drag tires on it..they do wheelies and hit high 11 seconds. 335 hp my ass

    • @michaelseibert634
      @michaelseibert634 Рік тому

      Andy Granatelli built the r3 engines, and said he wouldn't let them out of the shop if they didn't make 400 hp on the Dyno. George Krem has Brown Paper Wrapper, which is an r3 Challenger. I believe it made about 460 hp on the Dyno. As I understand it, Ted runs Stude Tomato in a Class that strictly limits how much modification can be done to the car. I believe everything they use had to be available when the car was built. But you better believe that Ted has that r2 engine tuned to perfection.

      In 1964 I just bought a 1959 Impala that had the 348 with factory 335 horse and factory 4 speed. Won a lot of street races with that 348 engine. Never seen a real Avanti before and raced one only once. 1st gear shifts at 6,000, I don't see the Avanti, second gear shift and the dam Stude is right next to me. Nothing but respect as I swallowed my pride, still loved that 348 though.
