In 1981 I used to own a `71 super beetle and now that I am in my 50`s I am feeling so nostalgic! If you guys decide to sell her, I would love to bring her home.

Classic for sure. Had a 2003 Beetle. It lasted just 10 years. My 75 Super is still going strong as my everyday car! 💟🙃

But what I miss too is Mike, where is he gone and is he coming back to TFL?

I've always been a huge VW enthusiast myself and love the Beetle. I'm not sure if anyone in this comment section has owned one of these newer Bugs or even sat in one, but I actually own one of these, a 2015 Turbo, and it is a very fun little car. It's actually got the Classic trim package on it, so it has those 17-inch heritage hubcapped rims, color-coded interior trim, brown leather seats with white stitching and checkered cloth inserts, and even a little rear spoiler. It's got an extremely retro vibe to it, even more so than this Final Edition model. I've put nearly 40,000 miles on it since buying it brand new and I've only ever had a couple of minor hiccups with it that were easily fixed myself or with a quick trip to the dealership, and even then it continues to trundle along and get smiles wherever I go since it's the only Beetle like mine in the area. Sure, it may not have the same charm as the aircooled models, but it's still quirky in its own way and great way to stand out amongst a sea of bland crossovers and SUVs that are slowly polluting our roads.

I own a 2014 Beetle TDI, and I have had it for about 4 months, and I really like it. Mine is actually a fast little car and I get a lot of looks to it which I didn’t expect . I wanted to get a fender edition model but I wasn’t able to find one with low miles. So I just got the tdi with fender speakers 🙂

@@deedee6064 I love those old VW TDI's! I know everyone gets upset about the whole Dieselgate scandal, but they got amazing MPG and ran very smoothly for diesels. My dad bought a new Passat TDI SEL Premium after I got my Beetle, and he easily got between 45-50mpg driving back in forth to Texas for work. He had to sell it back to the dealership unfortunately but he ended up buying a used Jetta Hybrid. He always says how much he misses the Passat though, and that it was the best car he had ever owned.

I own a 2013 Beetle, and let me tell you it has been a great, reliable, daily driver. It's been put on coilovers, and tracked quite a bit and I couldn't be happier. The old one is a must some day, but for now I'll enjoy the one I got!

People that owned original Beetles got used to checking the spare regularly. There were two advantages to the VW washer system -- It never broke and, there was so much pressure, it was almost impossible to clog.

I love the video! I like both beetles. I would choose the new one because it's safer, has more power and has all the modern amenities like air conditioning, cruise control, and back up camera. That being said, I would love a 1950's split window beetle if I had extra cash and a garage.

The middle beetle, or I guess the original new beetle? It doesn't have that trunk problem with the lip. The back seat cushion folder forward and up and the seat backs tucked into the space it vacated. It even had receivers on the back of tge seat cushion for the headrest to keep large cargo from sliding forward off the bed. I loved it. I fit a whole DJ rig in there once plus more, a full size oven several times, all kinds of stuff. Definitely the most role adaptable car I ever owned.

I've had a 74 and 2019. The 2019 is a great handling car with really good performance in the twisties, blast to drive. The 74 is a super low power car with the handling of a car designed in 1930.
The original will outlest a new one, but damn the new ones are fun to drive and luxurious by comparison.

I rented a new Beetle. One big problem with it, is that it wasn't designed from the ground up and it shows, particularly in the interior ergonomics. To get that rounded shape to wrap over Golf underpinnings made for some interesting compromises. The dash is about a mile deep and the front seat belt mount has a different zip code that the front seat.

The new one doesn't have the battery under the rear seat . You don't have to scrape the insides of the windows in the new one in the winter unlike the old one . You can't put a 6'2" guy in the well behind the rear seat in the new one . I learned standard on a 72 Bug .

There is no comparison, the new beetle turbo is based on the GTI platform, same engine and trans, slightly softer suspension. Performance is on par with the muscle cars of the 60's only with great handling, 200hp compared to the originals 36hp and 34 mpg compared to the originals 21 mpg, excellent heater and air conditioning compared to a heater so bad you had to scrape ice off the inside of the windshield in the winter and when the heater boxes start leaking pumped exhaust fumes into the car, great stereo radio and cd player compared to a crappy am radio. I had a lot of fun in the old bugs, but nostalgia can cloud the memories of the past.

The Super Beetle of the seventies was defined by its curved windshield and improved front suspension. The tail lights were also larger. The 71Beetle show here has the classic flat windscreen regular front suspension and the older style tail lamps. It’s a Beetle, just not a Super Beetle.

    • @michaelconverse5127
      @michaelconverse5127 4 роки тому

Actually: vw offered the super beetle sedan from 1971-79 model years. 1971-2 had the flat windshield and same dash as a standard beetle. 1973-5 sedans and 73-79 convertibles had the curved windshield and deeper dash
All convertibles from 1971-9 were based on the super beetle. Standard sedans were sold along side the Super sedans and continued through 77 model year in the USA.

When they were designing the me beetle, one of the options for engine layout was transverse mounted under the back seat. That would have been pretty damned cool and made for a fun balanced car to drive. Guess it was too expensive

The difference between old and new are irrelevant. I love the fact that you are so taken with how the keys differ and the fact that you have to manually lock and unlock the doors, and you called the 'instrument cluster' old-school. There is no 'cluster'. It's a single item that was self-contained. Beetles didn't need a tachometer because you just drove them. I owned a '74 Super Beetle with sunroof (BTW, they were an option back in the day) and it was both amazing and horrible at the same time. It went no matter what. It was loud and cold in the winter, and loud and hot in the summer. It smelled like vinyl, gas and oil, but it was so much fun to drive. 0-60 basically happened when it happened, not on someone's stop watch. New cars are all about being babysat by technology. I drive a Honda Clarity which is nothing more than a video game on wheels. It's where I am now in life and I like it. However, if someone tossed me the keys to a vintage Bug, I'd be all over it! Kids today know nothing about driving......or how to really drive a car.

If Ive designed the Beetle Ive done it in a very different way. At first the car has no more need to be cheap but not too expensive too and performance like a GTI. Ive used a stripped version of the 911 platform with a striped version of the 4-cyl boxer from the Boxster. The general configuration similar to the Type 3 with hatch back. The design should look more as the models before 68 with som carefully changes as a New Mini. However with the new id-platform its possible to build an ev with this look.
