Stories like these forget that most Aliens aren't Hive minds. They would also have "extremists", racists, anarchists, etc. As long as they are capable of being individuals, it will be there.
There's a difference in culture. If a medieval army fought a modern one, they'd be outraged at how barbaric and uncivilized they are. War before WWI used to be organized and meant to inflict only enough injury to incapacitate a fighter (if possible) - which is why bullets used were always solid metal slugs, and mushrooming bullets were banned by every major country because they caused undue suffering and injury.

A lot of these stories glorify how utterly ruthless, brave and proficient humans are at war and killing others. I’m not sure if this is a message I want to keep hearing time and time again. It gets really old really fast.
The stories of inter-species comradeship and co-operation are far more preferable, in my opinion.
