2:03 I don’t really think you can actually hold a door open using traffic cones they are pretty light. This landlord is so dumb as he hasn’t used any logic into this sign. And if he has a problem with homeless druggies then why can’t he make this building a bit more secure

Problem may be because some of the idiots who live there let the druggies in, the caretaker must be trying to do a thankless job and needs more support from the housing officer.

I like that. You find one lift that works, and they've messed it up.

IME, most apartment blocks built in the last decade - and I've lived in a lot of them - have some fairly serious issues. They're not built to last, and tend to be maintained to the minimum standard. There are still some really nice ones out there - Warwick managed a solid 10/10 complex I lived on a few years back (although that had its own serious cladding issues) - but most "modern" blocks do have issues with plumbing, security, lifts, cleaning or *insert non-structural issue here*. I'd wager that most of the stuff that's gone up in the last decade will be demolished way before its lease is up.

One thing I don't really understand is the benefits of owning a lease. I can understand the advantage of owning a freehold, and I can see the advantages of renting on a monthly basis. But to me owning a lease seems to be the worst of both worlds. A lease often costs not much less than the equivalent freehold, so not much cost saving. You still have to pay a maintainer fee, and depending on the contract this can sometimes be a bit of a con, and can sometimes be open ended (for example the residents are forced to pay the cost of the cladding being replaced). Then there will be loads of conditions and rules set on the lease.
Freehold advantage - Its yours to do whatever you want with.
Freehold disadvantage - If lots of maintenance is needed you have to pay the entire thing yourself. Expensive to buy.
Renting advantage - Flexible if you like to move area often. You don't get hit with a bill if maintance is needed.
Renting disadvantage - Rent is expensive. You are tied down to the landlords rules. You can be kicked out.
Lease advantage - I can't see any other than it is harder to be kicked out.
Lease disadvantage - Expensive to buy. Maintance bills may suddenly be put on you. You are tied down to the landlords rules.
Leasing seems to be the worst option. Am I missing something here?

I worry about the actual structure of many of these buildings. Looking at the new buildings going up in London there is little redundant strength in the design. If this is combined with the neglect seen here we will be looking at possible collapses in the future. It's sad for the younger generation who can only afford a lease in such a place.

@@benolifts No, you’re right. I bought a lease flat a couple years back purely because I was sick of private landlords, and the flat was cheap. But now that better renting options exist such as Quintain etc, I’ve sold up and started renting again.

The worst kind of landlords are the investor types that buy up old houses and milk them. They typically buy them because of the low interest rates, and want to maximise their property in a run down neighborhood for super high rent prices for the unlucky tenants that have no other option.

    Great video.
Maybe you could do a video on the top 20 metro/commuter rail systems that you haven’t been to? I’d like to see Sydney on there as we have our really old V set and K set trains down here. The V sets are over 50 years old! Both trains have some awesome old Camshaft and chopper motors and can go up to 115kph. Then you have the Tangaras, an awesome old series of trains that have tons of different refurb variants sprinkled throughout the system kinda like Riga.

So we presume that the landlord's shittiness is at play in regards to the slow lift speed as well -- but why would management intentionally slow the lift speed down like that? (Unless you're presuming that the slow speed is due to it being in such disrepair?)
