I can onely imagine one excuse for the first module... It was a homebrew the writer plaayed with his friends, and THEY had a great time bull*ing around. Onely without that exact groupdynamic the module is dead weight. A cutt out from a Campaign where we lack the context that makes this little adventure somewhat interesting.

Just for Info. Not all modules run are official modules made by Wizards of the Coast.
A majority is just stuff made by Players.

13:12 Worst part? Aperantly in this DM-ing club or whatever you as a DM are NOT alowed to modify the modual in any way shape or form. So even If you know that it's bad you can't do anything abouth it for the players.

      yep
another dude who...sadly seems doesnt make content anymore, Spoony
once told a D&D about DMing for a like Adventurer's league thing where he modified an encounter to not make it so embarrassingly weak (and this was old school D&D where people were expected to carry extra character sheets
ok so the original encounter was 3 wizards basically wielding sticks, with 1 spell, magic missile
and at least 3 of the players at his table were min-maxing nerds who made the most OP battle clerics so they would have used those wizards as toothpicks, not to even mention the other 2 or 3 players
all spoony did was change the spells, gave 1 wizard sleep, the other was like ray of enfeeblement and the 3rd was like charm person or something, all in all still 1 spell per wizard
long story short the heavily armored fighter in the party was hit with the ray of enfeeblement and could barely move in his own armor much less properly swing his own weapon
2 of the clerics never woke up, got their skulls bashed in and the 3rd was busy dealing with the rogue that got charmed
eventually the party won because hey its still just wizards, a stiff wind could kill these guys, and there was the standard saltiness of loosing a character but overall Spoony said everyone enjoyed the challenge
the admins however pretty much banned him from DMing for changing the module and killing players

Iirc because games are shared or played at the same time. So changing them would be bad for continuity if a players talked about something and for two different experiences

Never played Adventurer's league but some of their rules seem utter nonsense to me.
Like this puffin story. If one of the goals of the _League_ is to get players into D&D... then why did they gave Puffin a completely garbage one shot campaign with no gameplay at all and he's not allow to change anything at all because it's suppose to be a _standardized_ experience? Literally what experience? not only the module does not have any combat but also the players didn't use any _talking mechanics_ (investigation, deception, bartering) which was supposed the module central theme, solving a mystery. They just literally sat down to hear a bad story and the DM can't even attempt to fix anything. Not to mention the core rule of the game is that the DM can change anything he doesn't like in the first place (It's even in the handbook).
If that were my first D&D game I'm never playing again.

Airier, I highly recommend watching JoCat.
His video on DM-ing is really fun and informative.
Though I recommend watching all the Crap Guided to DnD videos because they are all short and fun

We ran Hoard of the Dragon Queen when 5e was still new. We had fun, but we figured out the hard way how janky it was.
It may have been revised since then but we encountered Shit like enemies that clearly weren't balanced, encounters making wild assumptions of player behavior and my favourite: Getting to fight two bosses at once in unfavorable terrain with no preparation because we succeeded too well on previous checks and fights.

Airier, for more tips on what NOT to do as a DM, watch XP to Lvl 3's video on The Tomb of Horrors. Arguably the worst dungeon ever created

    • @Johmpa
      @Johmpa 2 роки тому

It's a horrible dungeon but the story goes that it was made by Gygax himself for the express purpose of taking his players down a peg.
Many of the dickish things in that dungeon were made to screw overly knowledgeable players using broken mechanics.

Since you've seen the Curse of Strahd player review podcast, I'm curious as to what your reaction to finding out Gouda's character wasn't 'playing' at being oblivious. That she took months after the game was over to figure out 'Magic Dad' was evil. What do you think of that Unicorn Ranch ending?

In terms of the locket the module should've said about playing the previous module so that things could help make sense, however it should really help the DM with what is happening.

Since you've mentioned being new to the hobby, I just wanted to mention that you should check out some of the more narrative systems* like FATE and Chronicles of Darkness.
*As opposed to DnD, which the mechanics incentivize playing as a combat simulator with roleplaying tacked on

I actually side with Brennan Lee Mulligan on this one: D&D not having mechanics for roleplay helps it as a roleplaying device.

That's, a fair assessment. It gives the DM more freedom to shift their narrative around, but it also tends to give them more responsibility for keeping the story and characters on track.
