The practical points presented in this video are probably the best and most useful things I have seen on staccato in 25 years of playing and learning from multiple teachers.
Excellent and practical! I agree with Eyal - don't waste time practicing motions (like at 3:20) to "prepare" for this when the actual technique will be a different motion!
completely forgot about this video, it helped me so much; now i changed my bow and rediscovered it you can easily put evevrything this guy's saying on a blackboard and keep looking at it
I've been working on my up bow staccato for many months, although it is better than before, I couldn't really get the technique and mechanics behind the whole thing.
I must have watched all the you tube videos there is to see regarding the technique, this is by far the best which actually worked for me instantly. What I realized was, I have used both light and heavy (index and ring finger) together while trying to achieve a steady up bow staccato, which confused my mind and produced an utterly unstable electrocuted sound. Thank you, I can't believed the solution I've long struggled with was resolved by the video!
I dont even play the violin and couldn't stop watching.
Paganini 21 anyone?
Thank you so much for the clear and helpful teaching of this technique.
Wow, thank you very much! I'm going to practice like that from now on!
Excellent instruction and understanding of the matter! Thank you!
Thank you sooooo much!!!
I gave up long time ago on this technique but now I do want to try one more time!
He's a master. This is the best explanation, most helpful video. :) I'll try this today.
(And, unrelated, he's very handsome too.)
Sir you are excellent. I’ve watched hundreds of videos, because I was interested in how one teaches it. Yours is by far the best and the most productive.
Dear Eyal, just discovered it, it is brillant! Yossi
Thank you for detailed explanation...I should use your exercises with students starting their familiarity with flying staccato...
Excellent video! Thank you for the lesson!
Thank you very much for the Lesson!
Heifetz way of teaching slur staccato -- When practing arpeggios, practice slur staccato when you do second time. Then double staccato each note.
Another words no secret but to practice daily when you do scale practice.
Thanks so much! Brilliant advice

edwin barreno downbow staccatto is a very different technique, which, to be honest, I rarely use.... but maybe I ll get to show this in another video. my chinrest is handmade, got it by chance too many years ago
i heard u snuck in a tiny passage of zigenerwiesen in there, great video by the way :)

Hi,Is a good tutorial your video; This is a very light up staccato ...I work the 3rd mouvement of Saint-saens violin sonate n1 and is not exactly the same staccato up-bow. I think..In a summer course they told me that I should use only fingers-wrist flexibility mouvements and almost without any arm mouvement..How is working for you..?Is a different bow staccato than this you show here?Regards
popi toto many people play differently, especially this technique. It is all about controlled chaos :) that is why we can not just imitate Heifetz and be done with. That said, my technique works for me...
For the double tap you started by showing line staccato. When you change to flying staccato, I understand you are using your third finger rather than the first? Are you actually tapping/adding pressure with the third finger it in this exercise? thank you for your help with this. I'm going to watch all of these videos since this is a technique I was never taught, haven't mastered (yet), and have avoided! I had been trying, as you mention here, with impulses from the first finger which is never going to work. So happy I've found your videos!
Also, having watched more of the video now, are you starting the flying staccato from the string or sometimes from above the string? I think it was from on the string but the second exercise made me wonder about this. Thank you for your help with this. Wonderful videos and I'm so pleased to have found them!

Am I wrong to think that flying staccato is easier than regular staccato?
Thanks Paul Rudd! (Its just a joke)
saint-saens havanaise anyone?

who's here for la capricieuse elgar?
I lost my ability to do staccato due to a medication...
At 3:50 the double-tap. You need to be more specific in HOW to do the double tap. Take us through the motion in detail, and THEN demonstrate it.
