    As a Vietnam veteran and former employee at the off-campus Goddard space tracking station doing ERTS download of data via 40' dish during the problematic days of Sky Lab, it does my heart good to witness all the international cooperation that has gone into making the space station a success. A big thanks to NASA for making all these videos available so that we can all take pride in these undeniable proud achievements.

    I remember living in Titusville back in April 1981 and witnessing the very first space shuttle launch. I still dream with space shuttles all these years later. During one particular night launch, the rattling sounds were so loud, a couple of our windows had to be repaired.

      Mars is a totally STUPID idea. the moon would make a LOT more sense. but not Mars. that's a 3 YEAR mission IF they can even get back here at all. these chemical rockets are NOT the way to get there (much less getting back). yeah imagine NO infrastructure for 3 years? just for openers they'd need at least a THOUSAND razor blades. and imagine FEEDING just a very small crew for 3 YEARS. WTF are these people thinking? What about things like O2...or very heavy stuff called water? Human bodies need a LOTTA exterior "support" that we evolved HERE to resolve. HERE, folks. Not on Mars with NO magnetosphere, 1/3 our gravity, no atmospheric pressure, no atmosphere that we can use for anything (at least NOT without a lotta "conversion" equipment that somehow we gotta pack along with us).

    Just out of interest and I may of missed the reason but why only 4 astronauts flying this last mission?

    • @RCDUDEFPV
      @RCDUDEFPV 5 років тому +3

      NASA announced the STS-335/135 crew on 14 September 2010.[18] Only four astronauts were assigned to this mission, versus the normal six or seven, because there were no other shuttles available for a rescue following the retirement of Discovery and Endeavour. If the shuttle was seriously damaged in orbit, the crew would have moved into the International Space Station and returned in Russian Soyuz capsules, one at a time, over the course of a year. All STS-135 crew members were custom-fitted for a Russian Sokol space suit and molded Soyuz seat liner for this possibility.[19] The reduced crew size also allowed the mission to maximize the payload carried to the ISS.[20] It was the only time that a Shuttle crew of four flew to the ISS. The last shuttle mission to fly with just four crew members occurred 28 years earlier: STS-6 on 4 April 1983 aboard Space Shuttle Challenger.

    Fantastic achievement. I cant understand why they did not keep Atlantis docked with the ISS on a permanent basis not just for extra room but for as an emergency escape vehicle. I'm sure ISS has more than one docking station. I hope America can start a new space exploration program soon!. The Russians charge America $70 million to take just one person to the ISS!.

    • @rogerk6180
      @rogerk6180 6 років тому +1

      Craig Hudson 70 million is a steal compared what it costs to get a shuttle into space.
      Anyway, would be nice if more countries did manned flights though. I think china and japan also have programs. So in the future there might be 4 or 5.

    • @yxeaviationphotog
      @yxeaviationphotog 5 років тому

      There would be no way to keep the shuttle powered up for an indefinite amount of time. Once the fuel cells are done, they are done. Also, since there were American's already going up on Soyuz, they would use the Soyuz as an escape vehicle.

      Wow I can't believe someone else that feels as I do. Yeah this was an absolutely STUPID design. With a 4000 mile entry into the atmosphere which is totally absurd just for starters. The Saturn 5 could put a huge amount of things in LEO that put these things to total shame. Along with a re-entrant a LOT shorter (& therefore safer). It appears that NASA really doesn't care about sacrificing a few lives to meet the "cause". And finally remember that WE'RE paying for all this chemical rocket exploration when we should be making a much stronger effort to find a much better means of counteracting gravity. I also cannot forget the beautiful Ariane 5 that launched JWST.

      No I have not, but that’s not proving anything that it’s a ‘poorly thought out design’. And you’re right, you did not say ‘I wish none of this was invented’ it was ‘so happy that this poorly thought out design was retired’. My question for you is; is it all that really of a poorly thought out design? Because those cost overruns were definitely not just the shuttle alone, it was most likely the shuttle AND the cost to build the station modules combined with our normal costs.

    • @faktisletztenendes
      @faktisletztenendes 3 роки тому

      Let's put the enormous financial charge for American tax payers aside for just a moment. Let's also put aside the fact the Shuttle Fleet would've been in a need for a total technical makeover. The design of the vehicles was and still IS state of the art and the concept was great. Yet even Mr Musk can't outmatch the amount of payload the shuttles were able to transport (yes, I'm sure one day he will). So far his rockets are pretty old-school and the most stylish things he's put into space flight are Teslas to take the crew to the launch pad and... some "sci-fi-sh" looking, Trekkie designer space suits ^^ (please excuse my bad English, I'm German)
