- Living the Classical Life: Episode 61
Susanna Mälkki is making waves in the world of conducting and joins us for a delightful conversation about her journey from being a cellist to being bitten by the conducting bug. She discusses the tradition of conducting from her native Finland, and discusses the conductor's world and responsibilities - and what it means to be a leader. She also discusses performance day routines, dealing with disappointments, and what is required to create magic on stage.
I have a story about Maestra Mällki that highlights and echoes the beauty of soul we experience while watching this fascinating Interview. Years ago, when I was the Special Events Manager at a US Symphony Orchestra, I had the pleasure of hosting a small donor dinner for Maestra Mällki after a great performance by her and our musicians. She sat across from me at table and we fell into easy conversation. She quickly figured out that I had studied singing, had failed, and nonetheless, she got me to sing the beginning of Lenksy's aria from Eugene Onegin in the middle of the dinner. It was like she, with a gentle smile and an understanding heart, had wiped away years of shame and misery, in an instant. A magic moment in which a world famous conductor simply beheld me do my little thing, like in Massenet's opera, "Le Jongleur de Notre Name." And though I didn't expire afterwards, thank God, I will never forget it nor the kindness that conductor Susanna Mällki showed me that evening when she stepped aside and made me shine. Kiitos paljon Maestra!!!
That's a wonderful story, Paul Hearn. Thank you for sharing it!
Fabulous moment for you - what a gift! Thank you for sharing the story. Any of us who have tried and failed (and that's pretty much everyone) are fortunate to have encountered one or more artists who lift us up with a word, a vote of confidence, encouragement or belief - it changes us, in ways we could not have imagined before they reached out a hand to help us along. Bravo! and mille grazie alla Maestra Mälkki!
I love her expressions...her eyes, when she communicates with the orchestra.
She’s such a fine musician and soul.
So nice and genuine, but also as profound as her music making.
Susanna Mälkki you are the best conductor
Love your interviews they provide such wonderful perspective. Thank you so much for you diligence and work.
I look forward for attending Susanna Mälkki conducting the Boston Symphony now in October, 2019.
Great interview! Showing the intricacies of conducting and musicianship! Greetings and respect from Cyprus 🙇
She was incredible with the LA Phil last night
This is a great lady, and a fine mind.
Great questions, great interview. Keep up the " great" work! Greetings from Canada.
What a lovely interview
I agree. "Food for the mind". Intelligent questions, deep-rooted answers. And spoken British English is a massage for eardrums... :0)
Who was the wonderful interviewer? He should be credited.
1:32 With great power comes great responsibility.
I am not sure who the interview is, but can you do some soft music while you recite scripturas in your solemn voice?
