Not gonna lie, the hook is surprisingly useful at times. I don't have this particular model, but the hook has come in handy more than once, which is more than you'd normally expect for such a strange tool xD
Yeah a lot of people seem to think the hook is nice… I’ve just never found a use for it that I can’t get around with the other tools 🤷♂️ One off the good things about SAKs is there’s different tools for different folks 👍
I finally broke down and purchased a Compact. I prefer 2 layer SAKs for EDC so it was the Compact or continue to carry my Spartan with a little Classic SD just to have scissors. I haven't owned it long enough to know if it will truly replace my Spartan. I wish Victorinox would replace the Hook with a Plastic Cutter designed to open that darn Clam Shell/Blister packaging so many companies use. I think I would use that on a more regular basis than the Hook. Thanks for the videos!
I’ve really struggled regarding the best option for my urban carry… I kinda wanted to dislike the Compact and have gone back to carrying many other models for edc again to compare to it - I don’t think ANY of the models cover everything you’d ever need but for me the whole point of edc is to have something there you can use for when you don’t have other more appropriate tools to hand, and really I do now think the Compact might be the best light and slim option for everyday just in case use. Just enough to be dead useful and get you by without having a ton of useless sh*t on it (barring the parcel hook - I STILL don’t like that tool much! Lol). Main blade, scissors, combo tool (although I really think it’s not super-great it DOES function ok for a load of tasks as long as you don’t expect too much from it - it’ll get you by until you can access ‘proper’ tools), pin, pen, toothpick, tiny ‘eyeglasses’ screwdriver: these are all very useful to me personally. My other very favourite slim edc is the Cadet - I Love the way those look and feel and it has a great set of tools, but the Compact is really very good I think and definitely covers more bases, even if it covers some of them less well. U getting on ok with yours still?
I agree a packaging cutter might be a nice replacement for the hook! Or I’d love to have that awl on there instead too. Anything other than the hook really! 😂
I've been carrying my Spartan for 10 years now but I miss scissors. I bought Classic SD last week but it seems too small for me, even as a complement on the key ring. So now I'm deciding between a Compact and a Huntsman as a beefier alternative to my beloved Spartan.
These are superb to carry around when you have little need for screwdriving or levering stuff. For me that's at work. Knife, scissors, pen, bottle opener. In the smallest possible 91mm package. Victorinox sell a little tool kit that has a range of different little drivers for the corkscrew. I use a sim card pusher thing, which is perfect for adjusting a watch clasp.
Yes i absolutely agree with what you said about the Compact! I did buy the set of 4 corkscrew tools too - i've only used the sim pusher twice on sim card slots but that's a good idea about watch clasp adjustment, i'll give that a try. They're a cute little add-on set, those mini tools.
I like the hook on outdoors focused knives E.g. the Huntsman. It's good for lifting pots off the fire (although you can lock the bottle opener at 90 degrees and use that), tightening laces, pulling knots or tent pegs. I've never tried this but I've seen a few people say it makes a good spoke key as well if you're a cyclist. I could definitely see the appeal of a "Compact Huntsman" which would add the saw and the awl to the Compact and make a smaller tool
The hook certainly divides opinion, that's for sure! I don't hate the hook (it does make a good tent peg puller!) but I'd rather have the awl any day. A 'compact hu stman' would be awesome for outdoors use! 👍
I carry a compact everyday and the scissors are a must for me also the pen has come in handy I wear glasses and the eyeglass screwdriver is great the only SAK that competes with it is the super tinker .
Must say I'm growing to love the compact more and more all the time - it's great for edc and if I need more/stronger tools then I'll grab something else, but the Compact is great for basic needs. I have a deluxe tinker and that gets a ton of use around the home 👍 Thank you for commenting 🙂
I think having a true blade with a pen is one of the mane reasons why it's so loved. People don't want to buy plus scales. They want them ready on the knife they buy. I'm absolutely sure that if Victorinox made a Spartan with plus scales, people would buy it massively. I carry a Compact everyday but I don't like the hook. I prefer the Spartan's awl which allows me to open boxes while keeping clean the other side's tools I use to eat.
I think you're right - having the plus scales and accessories included is a bonus and if you do the mod yourself it makes the cost of making, say, a Spartan Plus close to the price of a compact… And I totally agree - the awl is a brilliant tool, especially compared to that dubious hook! Thank you for commenting 🙂
@Rosalind ROSSITER Felix is the BEST! 😃 Honestly, I feel like I always have to give the hook a bit of a gentle ribbing as it’s the least used tool for me but I DO see it has its uses really! 😉 Thank you for the comments! 🙂
I think the inclusion of the hook is that it was one of the few tools that could fit on the same layer as scissors. Best use I’ve found for it is to hold the pen, as well to remove the grilling rack from a hot toaster oven.
I have been running my Compact with a Pioneer lately. The Pioneer has all of stronger Alox tools that I love and the Compact adds the pen/tweezers/toothpick(which I have swapped for a ferro rod), corkscrew (storage area for tinder and mini flathead), pin, subpar nail file (I do use it though) and the large scissors. The hook, combo tool, and knife are all just extra weight to me with this setup, so I am thinking about swapping the Compact for the Manager (with Pioneer). I have not tried the smaller scissors though as all I currently have are 91mm models with scissors. I mainly use the scissors to cut my nails and having the bigger file is an attractive idea. Plus that adds a proper Philips, an easier access pen and is 1.2oz lighter at the cost of losing the pin, hook, larger scissors, and corkscrew tools. The only big loss is the mini screwdriver and larger scissors for me. Truth be told, my Pioneer X ticks most the boxes for me, but it is fun to play/collect! I always carry my Benchmade Claymore folder, so more than one SAK blade is beyond even my backup blade needs so the dual SAKs setup is never going to be perfect. What can I say, I'm addicted haha! :D I enjoy the videos, keep em coming!
I think a Manager paired with the Pioneer is a brilliant combo! 👍👍 I often just carry a Manager and it serves very well but, yeah, with a Pioneer you’d have a wonderful setup! The all scissors on the Manager are actually better for nail care imho, thought the big scissors are better for first aid and other larger stuff. I’d say definitely get a Manager - cracking lil’ tool! 👍
@@accoutrements4469 After owning the Compact, I think it's a bit over-rated as well. I've not bent my combo tool, but that's because I use my Pioneer for prying tasks; I can definitely see that happening though as it is pretty thin! It's a good minimalist tool, I get it! Big scissors in the smallest package! I guess in a world of big ol' fat Leathermans, I feel like SAKs are all pretty minimalist! To put it in perspective, one of the heaviest 4-layer tools, the Alox Farmer X is 3.8oz and one of Leatherman's lightest offerings, the Skeletool weighs 5oz! A wave is 8.5oz and a Surge is 12.5oz! Yeah, I think we are all doing well with SAKs! Thanks for the feedback on the small scissors!
@@RippinBlastinSlashin yeah, I have mostly stopped carry Leatherman tools, largely because of the weight/bulk. I do still have 2 of the Juice models and they’re relatively light and really great tools - wish they hadn’t stopped making those things! But nowadays I’m all for carrying a MUCH lighter SAK with a separate pair of pliers - the best I’ve found for edc are the Knipex Cobra XS - these are absolutely fantastic for edc: light, sturdy and small - tiny actually - they almost look like toys but are verrrry able little pliers (there’s several reviews on UA-cam of blokes really giving these some hard use with amazing results). I’ve found it so much more versatile having pliers separate from the other tools as well, get a more versatile set up that way. 👍
@@accoutrements4469 I look forward to a review on them some time! I've seen them but it would be fun to see your take on them. I wish they had wire cutters on those Knipex though, then I'd be sold! I do IT so I am always cutting Cat6 and Coax. The SAK snips can do it... but it's a bit much for those little guys!
I don’t understand the popularity of the Compact, either. All SAKs are useful, but in particular the Compact seems to be a compromise in every way. Perhaps that’s thing. For my purposes, I find the Deluxe Tinker to be fantastic. I carry it every day. I also added a saw to it for cutting plastics and incidental limbing. To me, the Rambler on my keychain serves every purpose that the Compact does. I *would like to have the file-backed parcel hook from the Compact.
@@accoutrements4469 absolutely. amazing tools for the size. the opener/philips on those really should be a back tool option on the larger knives. it’s fantastic
For minimalist carry, the Compact or the Waiter (Assuming you can live without the scissors) with the Plus scales aren't bad. I personally like a little more 'stuff' on my person, but everyone has different needs.
Yeah, if I think I’ll need more tools I’ll take a bigger model but the compact/waiter do make good ‘just in case’ tools if I have nothing specific planned 👍
The bottom line is they're all missing something so depends what you want to give up. I find the Compact is an unparalled complementary tool that has items that just aren't found almost anywhere and certainly not the others mentioned here (climber, spartan, etc.). If one wants the pin, glasses screwdriver, pen and even yes the hook, then this is great EDC that has super useful scissors and blade. I find it complements a multitool or other knife perfectly. I wish Victorinox inporporated the pen, pin and glasses driver into more models; i find i'm often without a pen and need to jot something, or need a small diameter sharp object (pin or glasses driver)...this is perfect.
Wise and considered words there. Thanks for that. The more I use the compact the more I come to feel it is a fantastic urban edc - has just enough to get you by without unnecessary bulk - it’s a great model. Of course, there’s always the option of upgrading any 91mm model to the plus scales but then it’s extra cost, but I always do that - having a pen is just too useful to not carry one. Thank you for the comments👍🙂
In my opinion, the Compact makes too many compromises for the sake of saving one layer. Also the higher price doesn’t sense to me. For me, the Climber with plus scales/pen and a mini screwdriver and pin is just right for EDC. When in the outdoors, I really like the Huntsman with the Firefly ferro stick replacing the toothpick. When used according to instructions, it works surprisingly well. Just my two cents worth. Bottom line is you can’t go too far wrong with a Swiss Army knife.
I find the Compact ok for urban edc but, like you, think it does contain compromises in real world utility. And I'm totally with u on the Huntsman - excellent knife, definitely one of my favourites! 👌
I fitted yellow Plus scales to a Handyman and I think it's the perfect SAK for my usage. But yes, the Climber with Plus scales would do everything the Compact does, but better, and the extra layer isn't a big deal. They're both very thin.
I think the compromises are better than your solution for the money and admittedly small weight and size you save. I would have to import plus scales and the little screwdriver is hard to find for a good price here, plus you are losing the file.
I like the compact a lot. Throw a Keysmart pocket clip on it and it just disappears in your pocket. Though I agree that the combo tool isn't good; I'd much prefer just the bottle opener on it. The climber with plus scales is my favorite as well, but it is admittedly quite a bit bulkier
Thank you for the comment! 🙂 I really like the alox Cadet if I’m going really compact, or if you need as slim and discreet as possible then the alox bantam is a very nice knife & wafer thin too.
@@solomonkane408 YES - that would be absolutely amazing! I think plenty of people feel the same as well. Maybe one day Victorinox will listen and produce it... 🤷🏻♂️
My Huntsman has a hook on the back and it's far more useful than I thought it would be. I've had it less than a week and have already used it for shoelaces and taking out my daughter's hairbands as my fingers are too clumsy!
I actually really like this knife and it is my current EDC of choice. The file on the back of the hook and the ability to hold the pen under the collapsed hook make it well enough that it's worth while to me.
It’s a good knife. There’s always compromises with any SAK, and I think you have to choose the one that’s most likely going to cover you for any particular day don’t you 👍
When I first got a Spartan I thought that I would never use the small blade. Now, a few years in, it's easily the most used tool on it. I've been considering a compact but I feel like I'd miss the small blade. In all honest, I would like a climber without the opener layer.
Finally! Finally someone who shares my dislike of the combo tool. As a cap lifter it is only good for emergencies (but as a German, I can lift a cap with almost anything. 😂 If I do use a dedicated cap lifter, it better work.) I do have the Bantam Alox with the combo tool, but that's because it's extremely minimalist and I like that. As you said: in a pinch it's fine.
I don’t HATE the combo tool and am always a bit torn because it does work in a pinch and for very light duty stuff, it’s just nowhere near as useful as the separate opener layer tools… combo tool is ok if I’m just ‘pottering around’ with no specific tasks planned but if I know I’ll need to actually get decent use from them (I.e. driving Phillips and flathead screws, opening bottle caps, opening paint cans/light prying, etc. etc.) then I’ll always choose a knife with the opener layer 👍 I have an alox bantam too - very discreet and elegant knife if you need to carry the most minimal tool 👍
I got one model similar to that a Climber but in a beautiful camouflage scales. It will surely complement my bigger Hercules, a 111mm which I had for about 9 years now. If you want a similar model but with a Philips screwdriver instead of a corkscrew, you should get the Tinker model sir.
Yes I do like the camo scales too! I have a deluxe tinker - it’s the only model I have with the backside Phillips - I really don’t find it very useful in that position as it’s access is very limited and I much prefer having the corkscrew there as I find it has more utility (holding the tiny screwdriver, tinder, for undoing knots, etc)
Great review man! I don’t understand the price of that knife either… but I may have an answer behind its popularity! if I had to blame one person, for getting the world to look at it, it would probably be Zac (formerly from Blade HQ and now he’s on UA-cam as Zac in the Wild). Zac would carry the Compact and it would be seen in almost every pocket check. He used to also feature it a lot on his Instagram! His EDC has changed as of late, so I’m unsure if he’s still carrying one, but I would blame him for influencing the Knife and EDC communities into loving that knife! 😂
I have come to really like the Compact nowadays - really rate it for urban edc. I wouldn’t chose it as my only tool for out in the wilds or anything but it’s great for urban environments problem solving 👍
best non extisted knifes imo: 1. Compact but instead of hook a phillips from explorer (not the bulky rounded one like on Tinker) with added nail file like in here 2. Alox Bantam but with scissors, best super thin gentlemans knife
Great video, thank you! I agree the Spartan seems like a better option but I think the scissors are my most used tool so the Compact may have to go on my shopping list.
I have to agree..I just got a compact and I’m not overly impressed..it’s fine but not all that..I actually like the Spartan/SD combo so I get the scissor and all 4 main tools..Thank you for sharing..new sub!
Thank you kindly! I do really like the Compact and it’s fine for if you have nothing in particular in mind, but if I know of going to be doing any actual work that might need sturdier tools I’ll always pick a different SAK which has the separate opener layer as the tools are much sturdier on those (like the Spartan, or Sportsman, or whatever). It’s definitely nice having the scissors for sure but I don’t think they’re as useful as a main blade. As u say, carrying an SD/Rambler/Manager gets around that anyway 🙂✌️👍
I like the combo tool - I think it's just as good as the bottle opener for opening bottles and almost as good as the can opener for opening cans. It's not as good a pry tool though, and it's not a good Phillips at all. It's all a tradeoff.
Totally agree - always a trade off. For general urban edc, though, I’ve grown to accept the combo tool - it performs its functions just fine when you have nothing else to hand or until you can access a more appropriate tool. And that’s the very ethos of an edc pocket tool for me 👍
Compact, Spartan, Climber… all you need for EDC is a Manager (or rambler). All jokes aside, Victorinox makes a lot of great knifes. Personally, I would put Compact into top 3 with Rambler and classic SD. I get the point about the tool not being super durable but if is doing any kind of real work, I would rather have a heavy duty plier based multitool.
The Compact is a great edc choice I think. The Manager is probably my most carried SAK over the years and is genuinely more than enough for most ‘around town’ needs (or a Rambler of Classic SD are great too, as u say). For me edc is about having something with u until you can get to more appropriate tools, so any SAK will be much better than none I suppose at the end of the day - so many great knives to choose from! Have u tried the Knipex Cobra pliers? Those are so great, & personally I’d rather carry a pair of Knipex and a SAK than, say, a Leatherman or similar- cheaper, lighter and more versatile having 2 tools than just one Multitool. Just my opinion though, and thanks very much for your comments✌️✌️
Been carrying the compact more and have grown to like it but if I had to choose just one it’d be the climber. Or the Huntsman. Thank you for commenting 🙂
I totally understand why the Compact is so popular but the combo tool and the file seem like compromises to me and the price is a little high for what you get in my view. I like to carry the PioneerX with a Rambler in my 5th pocket. I wish Victorinox sold the Climber with plus scales. I think it would sell very well.
Pioneer x with a rambler covers a lot of bases! I think victorinox should offer plus scales in more models - I mean, it's an easy enough mod to do but a bit of a pain I suppose for some folks. I've made a climber with us scales and I think its better that the Compact, if a little wider. 👍
I wish more 91mm SAKS had an I line Phillips! The backside Phillips is good just a bit limited in places you can physically get it in to. I do have a deluxe tinker and that gets loads of use around the home 👍
@@accoutrements4469 The Explorer has an in line Phillips. There is also the Passenger and Scientist that have in line Phillips but, unfortunately they have been discontinued for years.
I will never understand why the scissors are so highly praised. The spring mechanism is prone to breaking and the whole apparatus needs to be babied when you fold it back into the scales. Wegner had a far better assembly where the spring mechanism was integrated into the body of the knife itself. In the rare event where I need scissors and a blade won't suffice, it's likely delicate work that would be better suited with an actual knife. Who also doesn't adore people thinking up obscure instances where the parcel hook might be more useful than a sharpened sewing awl and marlin's spike?
Personally I think the Vic scissors are the best on any Multitool - I’ve only ever had the spring break one one of them over the last many years and soon fixed with a new spring. ✌️Wenger style scissors do seem much sturdier but I don’t like the small serrations on my one and only Wenger knife - if I use em to trim my nails they leave them a bit jaggedly feeling (not a big deal though). I do agree that a blade is usually enough though and is certainly more useful and important than scissors 👍 Yeah always good to hear folk’s inventive uses for the hook! Thank you for your comments ✌️✌️
I think the compact hits just the right compromise when it comes to this kind of tool, al SAKs are ultimately a compromise since you are trading a tool for another but I think the compact ultimately manages to cover most of the bases for most of the enviroments, I use it extensively in the city, in the woods and even when sailing, really there's not much you can ask out of a tool of this kind, the only problem is the price, it is really excessive and I don't know why Victorinox has increased it in the last years.
Yeah I agree - any SAK is a compromise isn’t it, compared to dedicated tools. The Compact is a great knife to have for “just in case”, I carry one often. In terms of price, you can usually get them for around £32 in the UK (Amazon): once you factor in buying an extra set of ‘plus’ scales (with the pen slot), a mini pen, the mini screwdriver & a pin (to upgrade any other SAK to what’s already included with the Compact) then I don’t think that is a bad price at all but I realise they’re sometimes very much more expensive than that in other countries ☹️
Climber is a great choice, I just prefer the Compact for general around town use as it offers much of the same functionality but in a slightly more, well, compact form. All SAKs are pretty great though aren’t they and u just go with what tools u use most 👍✌️
For me the Compact is less bang for more bucks.(apparently it is hand built rather than machine made). All so you can enjoy having a nail file on the back of the hook. ? I'll stick with my Super-Tinker.
Did you see Jon Gadget’s video - that explained the price differences in some models to me too! But yeah, I do like the Compact - less tools than the likes of the Super Tinker though. I think all SAKs are a compromise aren’t they and it depends on what you’re doing as to what you carry on any particular day. It does for me anyway ✌️
@@accoutrements4469 I did see that video. I bought a super tinker because my camper had no scissors and now I keep buying different Saks so that I have a knife for all seasons.
@@accoutrements4469 I mean it. The hook is a great tool. When I carry the wood for the fireplace from my garden, nothing compares to the hook. And not only then.. It's an extremely helpful tool at home, on the road, and in my garden.
I don't get the Compact love. It's a bottle opener that sometimes just dents a lid and a crooked flathead that isn't a great pry tool at all. The plus scales and the driver bit are the best parts. I'm loving my Explorer with plus scales and a corkscrew bit.
I DO like the compact… as a slim ‘just in case’ option, but I agree that combo tool isn’t great. I’d rather have it than nothing but it’s too flimsy for anything even approaching harder use. All SAKs are a compromise somewhere along the way I suppose 🤷♂️
Truthfully tho I'm a unique case and like my shoe laces tight. Especially with skating and such but I also do decorative styles for Halloween and such so it's nice not cutting my fingers open through friction lol. It's a niche use but yeah. Just nice for not cutting your hands open essentially. Good if your carrying firewood too, the hooks rated to some crazy weights
The Compact has one of the worst, most difficult to use, nailfiles ever. If you was scissors, a Climber is better and it is only a couple of mm thicker but you do get an additional small blade and a proper can opener and cap lifter. Changing the scales for plus scales will give you a space for a pen. If a nailfile is needed then stick an emery board in your wallet. Unfortunately the Climber does have the so called parcel hook. Who sends parcels tied up with string these days? Felix Immler does have interesting alternative uses for "the hook" on his UA-cam channel though.
Yep, can’t really argue against any of what you said there! 👍 I think the climber (with plus scales) is certainly the better all-round model, no question. And I still don’t like the parcel hook much, even after Felix’s video! Lol
I'd carried the Compact for a long time before if was stolen. For the size, I'd rather carry the Climber Plus Reverse Scales. The only compromise it has is it's not as slender, but at that size it doesn't offset gains, and doesn't cross into the heavy folding knife range.
I’ve been carrying the compact a lot in recent weeks and come to appreciate it, but I do think the Climber is definitely better as an all rounder. Thank you for the comments! 🙂
@@accoutrements4469 Compact is one of the many that works well in the Victorinox belt pouch, but the cost is high for the compromises. I expect Compact's popularity has something to do with the current prices. Manager, Bantam Alox, even Climber, I find are better pocket carries. I really liked the Money Clip, but same problem of price vs. value also applies. If I had to run into burning storage and save one unit, it would be the onyx Climber Plus, even over my discontinued Boker and vintage Schrade. I got over losing my Compact. Day to day, it can get the job done, which is why it is a good thing it's still being made.
@@accoutrements4469 Both good, I'm just thinking Huntsman is less comfortable to pocket carry. One thing I would change with the Climber make the small blade a dual nail tool. I can't really think of a small blade being as useful, but it certainly doesn't hurt. One blade can be utility while the other a food cutter. Outdoors, Huntsman wood saw I guess is useful, just hasn't been my experience.
@@Euripides_Panz yes the Huntsman is just getting on the bulky side for me - I certainly don’t like to carry anything bigger in my pockets, not in ‘normal’ clothing anyway. Small blade can be useful, like u say, but I do like the little file tool too, like found on the Sportsman. Different strokes for different folks I guess isn’t it 🤷♂️🙂
I find the combo tool just about passable if you have nothing else, but it’s not up to any hard use whatsoever and is such a terrible Phillips driver 😕
Thing about the compact that just does not do it: de combination tool. Philips screws are just impossible with it. It is a joke in that regard. And ajusting philips screws is something that you always have to do in and around your house. Such a big, big deal if that function does not really work. So yeah, despite the compact being lovely compact, I will stick to the climber with added plusscales for pen. How about you?
Yes as much as I think the Compact is a good general around-town choice I agree about the lack of a Phillips driver - Phillips screws are soooooo much more common than flatheads aren’t they. TBH, I will more often carry a little Manager model and/or a Sportsman over the Compact. Those are probably my 2 favourite models.
I wanted the Compact but went for the Waiter due to cost. I’ve just seen the Compact for £34 so I’ve pulled the trigger to get it. I think if you can find it for £40 or less then it’s worth it. 16 tools on two layers. Not bad.
I do think it's good value at £34 for sure, especially as you get all the extras already with it: if you bought aftermarket 'plus' scales (with the pen slot), then the mini pen, a pin for the pin slot & a mini eyeglass screwdriver you'd be looking at spending quite a bit extra to upgrade any other swiss army knife to include what you already get included with the Compact. Did you get yours yet? What do you think to it if so?
@@accoutrements4469 I got it just before Christmas. It’s been used non-stop. Pen for game scoring. Knife for bits of tape. Bottle opener and corkscrew for drinks. Corkscrew for knots. Mini screwdriver for everyone’s glasses. Corner Philips for battery compartments. Scissors for everything. I’m not sure how much use it’ll get after the holiday madness dies down but it’s already paid for itself 🤣
It’s not toooooo badly priced on Amazon uk (or it wasn’t when I got mine anyway - about £32 but the last one I bought was about a year ago, probably more now as EVERYTHING costs more now, it seems), but I suppose you have to consider the extras you get included: the ‘plus’ scales and all the included small tools - pen, pin, eyeglasses screwdriver… those would all cost a fair bit to buy as extras. It’s a great knife for urban use 👍 Worth it imho ✌️
Absolutely, because if the used market is flooded it can be because dissatisfaction. The Swiss army classic SD is abundant bc of tsa confiscation . I recently bought 14 classic sds for $30 US . Great for giving as gifts
@@donaldstepp4850 I used to buy tons of SAKs from eBay as you could grab them so cheaply but eBay banned knife sales years ago so that avenue is cut off for me now - such a shame! ☹️

I use the hook a lot, for things that hooks are useful for. I hope they don’t replace it.
If you like the Spartan you'll love the tourist which is the Spartan's cute little brother.
I have a deluxe tinker and that gets a ton of use around the home 👍
Thank you for commenting 🙂
I think having a true blade with a pen is one of the mane reasons why it's so loved. People don't want to buy plus scales. They want them ready on the knife they buy. I'm absolutely sure that if Victorinox made a Spartan with plus scales, people would buy it massively. I carry a Compact everyday but I don't like the hook. I prefer the Spartan's awl which allows me to open boxes while keeping clean the other side's tools I use to eat.
I think you're right - having the plus scales and accessories included is a bonus and if you do the mod yourself it makes the cost of making, say, a Spartan Plus close to the price of a compact…
And I totally agree - the awl is a brilliant tool, especially compared to that dubious hook!
Yeah, the hook is always opposite the scissors. I don’t love the hook but it does come in handy once every million years or so for me 🤣 😉
I have been running my Compact with a Pioneer lately.
I have a deluxe tinker and do like it a lot, but the Rambler (or even better for me - the Manager) really is a fantastic super compact tool!
@@accoutrements4469 absolutely. amazing tools for the size. the opener/philips on those really should be a back tool option on the larger knives. it’s fantastic
Totally agree and wish they'd put that Phillips combo tool on the bigger knives
I have just purchased this exact model in the same colour scales as my EDC replacing my Climber
Nice! It’s a good model to have to keep pocket bulk to a minimum whilst still having a decent few tools on you 👍
For minimalist carry, the Compact or the Waiter (Assuming you can live without the scissors) with the Plus scales aren't bad. I personally like a little more 'stuff' on my person, but everyone has different needs.
Yeah, if I think I’ll need more tools I’ll take a bigger model but the compact/waiter do make good ‘just in case’ tools if I have nothing specific planned 👍
I use the parcel hook to tighten my sons baseball glove laces.
I love hearing people’s genuine uses for the hook! 🙂
I kept thinking you were using the parcel hook tool to pull Tampax. But then I finally realized you were saying tent pegs. 😂
Ha ha ha! I bet it’s do fine for Tampax too! Lol
You can buy replacement "plus" scales which have the slots for the pin and pen which can also be purchased online
By the time you buy plus scales, a pen, and an eye glasses screw driver with a climber, then you have well exceeded the price of tbmhe compact
@@Oshianis To each his own. There are enough options available to tailor your knife to meet your your personal requirements and budget.
If cadet alox had scissors I would rock that and I carry mine with a keysmart clip great tool that I use all the time .
That’s great - I do really like to hear when people find the book useful - it helps inspire me to try and use it more! 👍
I want one myself, I also have the same issue.. Why is it so expensive for less tools?
It is a real nice tool but, yeah, pretty annoying it costs more than others which have more tools but are cheaper. 🤷🏻♂️
I really don't miss the small blade at all myself, but its great we have so many options to suit everyone I reckon!
Finally! Finally someone who shares my dislike of the combo tool.
As a cap lifter it is only good for emergencies (but as a German, I can lift a cap with almost anything. 😂 If I do use a dedicated cap lifter, it better work.)
I do have the Bantam Alox with the combo tool, but that's because it's extremely minimalist and I like that. As you said: in a pinch it's fine.
I don’t HATE the combo tool and am always a bit torn because it does work in a pinch and for very light duty stuff, it’s just nowhere near as useful as the separate opener layer tools… combo tool is ok if I’m just ‘pottering around’ with no specific tasks planned but if I know I’ll need to actually get decent use from them (I.e. driving Phillips and flathead screws, opening bottle caps, opening paint cans/light prying, etc. etc.) then I’ll always choose a knife with the opener layer 👍
I have an alox bantam too - very discreet and elegant knife if you need to carry the most minimal tool 👍
I wouldn’t chose it as my only tool for out in the wilds or anything but it’s great for urban environments problem solving 👍
best non extisted knifes imo:
1. Compact but instead of hook a phillips from explorer (not the bulky rounded one like on Tinker) with added nail file like in here
2. Alox Bantam but with scissors, best super thin gentlemans knife
Both most excellent suggestions! I wish Victorinox would offer a custom knife option…
The hook is useful for putting your bike chain back on.
Yeah a few folks say that - I must try that next time and avoid the oily fingers 👍👍
Great video, thank you! I agree the Spartan seems like a better option but I think the scissors are my most used tool so the Compact may have to go on my shopping list.
If you don’t have a Compact definitely get one to try, I say - it’s a great option for urban edc for sure 👍
Or go for the climber. It's just a compact but with scissors
Yeah, Climber is a great choice - you get the much sturdier opener layer tools too :o)
And that’s the very ethos of an edc pocket tool for me 👍
Mine landed through the post this morning! I chose racing green as well. I love it
Glad you like it!! Despite the Compact’s limitations I am still carrying it most days at the moment - great little tool! 👍
Just my opinion though, and thanks very much for your comments✌️✌️
corps by the nostrils, you say? Interesting! I always drag them by the hair!
Ha ha ha, yeah but if the corpse is bald that's when u need the hook! 🤣
Love my compact, but wish it had harder steel
Yeah me too, although I don't HATE the Vic blade steel - it loses its edge quickly but is so easy to sharpen 👍
Love the Spartan. Not enthused with the Compact. Love that Climber too, that’s a good looking knife with the sapphire scales and green scale tools.
I use the combo tool as a package opener
Good call - I hate getting packing tape crud on my main blade 👍
I prefer having a Philips head over a corkscrew. But I can see the appeal. I’ve just swapped out my pioneer for a super tinker and I love it.
@@SnarkyRC I’d love a scientist! Wish they still made ‘em… ☹️
There's Also a spartan lite with in line philips
Love the British racing Green, but drop it in the grass it’s gone! Lol
Absolutely! The camo scales even worse!
I do agree that a blade is usually enough though and is certainly more useful and important than scissors 👍
Yeah always good to hear folk’s inventive uses for the hook!
@@accoutrements4469 They go for 50 euros here in Italy, way too much for a tool of this kind if you ask me.
Jeeez that IS quite expensive! Hard to justify that sort of price… ☹️
The Compact is just okay imo. I prefer the Super Tinker or the Climber.
Climber is definitely the better toolset 👍
Climber is my EDC ❤️
Yeah, SAKs can be addictive! 😃
I love the hook. Id never buy a Victorinox without the hook.
I don’t know if you’re joking or not!? Lol
@@accoutrements4469 I mean it. The hook is a great tool. When I carry the wood for the fireplace from my garden, nothing compares to the hook. And not only then.. It's an extremely helpful tool at home, on the road, and in my garden.
I do like it when people find the hook useful... :o) It's definitely one of my least used tool though personally.
I believe it to be a true gentleman's knife for Every day carry..
Yeah, absolutely agree! 👌
I thought I was the only one who had dragged a corpse by the nostrils with the parcel hook.
Ha ha ha, at least we’ve found a use for it! Lol
Screw tops? What kind of wine are you drinking?!😀
Ha ha ha! Most wine nowadays int it? Shame really. 🤷♂️
I like the hook for tightening my shoelaces
I'm still waiting for an occasion to find it genuinely useful... But I'm glad you find it useful at least! Lol
Thank you for commenting 🙂
@@Euripides_Panz The Manager is a great tiny tool - I love that one. If I could save only one model it’d be the Climber. Or possibly the Huntsman. 👍
Different strokes for different folks I guess isn’t it 🤷♂️🙂
I only want a Compact to take apart and use my Explorer to make a Scientist😎
I love the scientist - wish they still made it! Good luck with your mod!
I would love to own a "Compact" right now, but I'm really disappointed with the company for the time being.
Hi, have they let you down?
Hi. Why ?
Dont leave us hanging 😆
What have victorinox done to let you down?
I also bought the Compact because of the hype and I really think the combo tool is useless. Not really a Phillips in any way.
I find the combo tool just about passable if you have nothing else, but it’s not up to any hard use whatsoever and is such a terrible Phillips driver 😕
1000 points for starting the video with “hello there”
Ha ha ha, thanks for the points! ✌️
It’s like having a waiter and adding Scissors, Hook and a Pen for the low, low price of £30!
I wanted the Compact but went for the Waiter due to cost. I’ve just seen the Compact for £34 so I’ve pulled the trigger to get it. I think if you can find it for £40 or less then it’s worth it. 16 tools on two layers. Not bad.
Its a really good knife for urban general use!
@@corbenjIt’s so great to hear you’ve been getting such good use from it! Brilliant! I hope that continues long into the years to come too 👍👍👍
Why it is So expensive?
It’s not toooooo badly priced on Amazon uk (or it wasn’t when I got mine anyway - about £32 but the last one I bought was about a year ago, probably more now as EVERYTHING costs more now, it seems), but I suppose you have to consider the extras you get included: the ‘plus’ scales and all the included small tools - pen, pin, eyeglasses screwdriver… those would all cost a fair bit to buy as extras. It’s a great knife for urban use 👍 Worth it imho ✌️
It's pretty nice so nice I haven't happened across it on eBay
What, you haven’t found any for sale you mean? That’s got a to be a good advert for them hasn’t it! Hope you can get one 👍
Swisschamp still the King
For me the Champ is just too bulky for edc - at least if i'm just wearing 'normal' clothes and am out and about. I guess that's where the Compact wins - Good enough for edc when u don't want a bulkier tool 🤷🏻♂️ Thank you for your comments 🙂
Popular what?the compact or the s.a.k.?
Was referring to the Compact model!
Classic sd is best victorinox.
Classic as is a great tiny tool. I’ll always choose a Manager over the Classic though due to the extra tools you get with it ✌️✌️
