I was in that crowd. I can assure you everyone was excited about and during this show. It's just that at some points when the performance reaches a certain height everyone just shuts the f up and looks on in awe.
And before that we already had Apocalyptica with a full hour set!

Guitarist and harsh vocalist , Mark Jansen formed the band in 2002, after parting ways with his former band After Forever. Simone Simons is the lead singer, she was 17 in 2002. Coen Janssen is playing the keys, Isaac Delahaye on guitar, Rob van der Loo on bass, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek. 8 albums, and several EP's to choose from.
If you really want that portable keyboard, you're in luck. It is commercially available. Called a REVO-1 Curveboard, it is made by Nu-Motion in Montreal, Canada.

Try kingdom of heaven or victims of contingency from omega alive next. Very executed transitions, heavy and melodic with influences of death and melodic black metal in this songs.

'Unleashed' and 'Rivers' from the same concert are also beautiful performances (the latter being one of the most beautiful metal ballads I've heard)

Hey good track to jump in on too. Epica have a huge variety of music, and they are so talented. Would love to see the live. I seem to love bands that put some eastern sounds into their music. Epica, Opeth and Igorrr are my top three metal bands. But yeah makes sense that Marks other project is called 'MaYaN'.

Welcome! I'm not sure if you read comments, but you've just discovered one of the greatest metal bands ever and currently the peak of symphonic metal. 😉 The lead soprano Simone Simons has one of the most beautiful ethereal voices (wait till your hear her voice from 15-20 years ago) and she's probably the best in using mixed vocals (chest +head) in metal. She's also a gorgeous woman as you may have noticed. The main growler is Mark Jansen, who is also the founder and mastermind of Epica, though all band members contribute to songwriting to various extent, depending on the song.
"One of the best choruses I've heard in metal" ? That means you need to hear at least another ten Epica songs, asap, because their choruses are just as good.
Just a few suggestions off the top of my head, with beautiful choruses, including some with Middle-Eastern elements:

Great reaction , thank you! . Epica has it all... from Black/Death metal sounds to the most soft and beautiful ballads, and everything in between.. My only tip is to listen to them (mostly) live! They are the best with an orchestra and Choir on stage

WJ, nice to be back! For your information; This is a dutch band and in the world the no, 1 symphonic band, followed by Nightwish. The singer Simone is a long time girl friend from Floor. They sang together too in the past. Like Nightwish they travel around the world as well, also in The US. They just celebrated 20 years Epica. Like Nightwish, there lyrics have profound meanings and many songs are many more minutes long. It is a new rabbit hole to discover and worthwhile listen to your violin player; she knows the way! Celebrating 10 years Epica, they did this with a symphonic orchestra and choir. "Retrospect" ,a venue for almost three hours and while being pregnant for three months and.......2 song together with Floor! Give it a try and for many months you will have new food to digest. Epica by name EPIC by nature. The most aptly named band ever and Simone is an Angel on earth. Hopefully you will be picking up some more of their amazing repertoire from the heavier ‘Consign to oblivion’ through the brilliantly balanced ‘Unleashed’ to the simply beautiful ‘Rivers’. Oh and whilst there is nothing wrong with their studio work their live shows add an extra dimension.

Make sure you react exactly to these versions, not random videos which may be low quality recordings, etc.
For "baby Epica" and "baby Simone" watch anything from "Paradiso Live" 2006 and "We Will Take You With Us" 2004. For the latter, make sure you always find newly uploaded remastered videos in HD/4K quality, not the old ones that are just 240p. Simone was just 19 back in 2004 and her soprano was still somewhat undeveloped, but very unique, warm and ethereal. Pure magic.🙃

Why is the crowd so dead, having been to one of the concerts on the same tour as this concert, I can say that "Code of Life" is at the "soft" end of the spectrum for the tour. They are probably just chilling before the next really heavy song hits them :D
Epica is one of my favourite bands, and probably the best live band I have seen. Tomorrow I am flying to the Netherlands to see them, and a few others, at a festival.
The song "Chasing the Dragon", from their Retrospect show, would be a good song to get a feel for the wide range of music Epica plays, and the live orchestra and choir really makes it special.
Epica were formed by guitarist Mark Jansen after he left the band After Forever (which was Floor Jansen's [no relation] first band). Great band and loads of excellent live videos to watch on UA-cam (including some collaborations with her friend, Floor). Simone is one of the best out there.

To answer your question why the crowd was so dead, was probably because of some gattling guns were placed around and connected to the kick drums, and everybody got shot xD

Yes. I've waited so long for this. Epica and NW are my Yin & Yan of Metal Music. And Simone is the siren of Metal, made for ballads. And like NW the diversity of Epica is huge. I would recommand Epica feat. Apocalyptica "Rivers" for a ballad, "Beyond the Matrix" Zenith live for a "regular" one, "Consign to Oblivion" Zenith live for one of the harshest. And "Sancta Terra" Retrospect live for an incredible duet with the goddess valkyrie 😂😂😂

If you check other live footage (especially from the Paris gig) watch out for Coen on keys. His main keyboard is on a track so he sometimes can be seen riding it across the back of the stage and at other points he pushes it across the back area and he runs around the front and rejoins it at the other side. The man is a born entertainer.

Great observations Sir! Some singers are just that - singers. You are a musician. There is a difference! I saw Epica with Sabaton last year and it was one of the best shows I've seen in years. Not only did they sound amazing, but they were so loose and had so much fun performing. And Simone absolutely nailed the vocal on this which is NOT easy. Cheers!

my guess to the question why the crowd wasnt moving ,would be , that i would consider this song as one of the more layed back songs of a epica set list , more a song to give the crowd a break , dont get me wrong , it is a beautifull song , but most other songs are heavyer, some by a lot
This is natural, those who discover symphonic metal with Nightwish cannot help but find Epica, those who love the performance of Floor Jansen cannot help but notice Simone Simons, firstly, they have been friends since the 2000s, Floor often performed at Epica concerts, their duet with Simone is a fairy tale, in addition, one of the authors and founders of the group, Mark Jansen (growls), worked with Floor Jansen (they are not related) in the group After Forever (by the way, After Forever did a couple of joint tours with Nightwish ), but Mark Jansen left the group in 2002 , he created Epica, After Forever itself still breaks up in 2009, Floor creates her own reVamp, but as a result she is persuaded to stay in Nightwish. I'd like to mention Amanda Somerville (if you've heard "Exit Edem"), who was a long-time collaborator and major influencer on both After Forever or Epica (and the relationship between the band members (gosіip) she married Floor's ex-boyfriend and After Forever's guitarist, who was the initiator of Mark's departure 7 years ealier), in fact she was Simone Simons' vocal coach. (at those times Simone was having an affair with Mark in Epica, but finally she met Kamelot keyboard player Oliver Palotai ) you might think that symphonic metal is a big bed for romantic pleasures, but yes, they quite overlap with each other, there are not many groups in this genre (because it requires more talent and talent, this is not fucking hip-hop or rap)

Also, if you're looking for anything else of theirs to listen to, I would suggest anything from the Retrospect show, which was their 10th anniversary show which had them performing with a full orchestra and choir on stage with them. Or their more recent Omega Alive or Live at the AFAS shows. Kinda hard to go wrong with anything from those shows.

Epica has history that overlaps with Floor Jansen. Mark Jansen the founder of Epica was a member of Floor’s band After Forever, before it ceased to be. Floor and Simone are good friends and have performed together on various occasions. Their voices compliment each other.

This is classic power metal, with some grindcore gutteral singing thrown in there...
no, you're wrong!!!!! This is symphonic metal with oriental elements. I don't think you know grindcore at all. This is growling and grunting, the kind of vocals in grindcore is more focused on fry screams.
What are some other bands that sound similar? Preferably with some song suggestions? So far I haven't heard anything like Epica.
