Massey Harris 30 Awakens After Long Rest

  • Today's video provides a surprise quick start of the old tractor that's been sitting unused for 3 to 4 years. The reason it was moved off the side was because the seat pan broke right off of the reinforced center mount rendering it unsafe to use.
    The final part deals with the replacement seat and seat spring. Not shown was the aggravating job of cutting numerous half inch belting circles to provide the rubber bushings inside the dampener for the seat spring. Without the dampener, the spring would be in a state of continuous and rapid bounce !! #tractor, #massey, #shop

      Awesome !! They are very functional small tractors for a little bit of land. Good luck with it. If its a non-runner, it'll be fairly easy to get fired up unless its stuck. Here's a playlist of mostly MH 30 videos if you are interested: ua-cam.com/play/PLk72G9DTzZ1scRe0kTxX5a_YIwtpTChTm.html

    Them old Masseys were really something. We had a 1952 MH 44 special bought new for the farm that pulled grain, manure, and hay trailers for 30 years then was retired to working a 5 acre garden with a 2 bottom plow, 4 foot drag, and an old 2 row corn planter right up until 2021. In the winter the old girl also handled snow plowing for me, and a few of my neighbors properties. You're 100% right about them old Continental engines in them Masseys. She'd fire right up no matter how cold our New York winters were. Something about the points on that tractor I rarely had to clean them even sitting out in the elements. All of those years of work and never had an engine overhaul either. While the old continental still purred, the old girl started needing a lot of work. The steering box was nearly shot, the seat was ready to fall off and worn like yours lol, and everything leaked, etc so I finally sold her to another old farmer that had been eyeing the tractor for years. He is an antique tractor collector and restorer and he had every MH tractor model except for the 44 special. Felt good to make that old man's day. haha I loved your channel for a long time now. These old tractors are going to out last the new ones I think and your knowledge of how to get them running is invaluable!

      Well Brodie, you sure got the goodie out of that one. They ARE one of the most reliable tractors I've ever had the pleasure to run. But as time goes by all those parts moving together just kinda lose their tolerances. I sure am glad you let it go to someone who will probably bring a fresh new and much easier life to the old 44 !! Thanks for watching the silly stuff I do here, I do appreciate the time you guys all take to visit us here. Take care and have a great day.

    For years I have enjoyed your videos, especially after I realized you too are a Marine Corps veteran. I have similar interests and enjoy saving old tractors from the scrap yard. I always wondered about the Tractorman44 handle and thought maybe 44 was your birth year. But I thought you sure look young for a guy who’s been around for eighty years! Even your “much older brother” looks younger than eighty! Recently I saw one of your videos in which you shared that the 44 is a tribute to the Massey Harris 44- one of your favorites. As a boy helping haul hay I occasionally drove their 33 which was a treasured experience. Since retiring I’ve mechanically restored several Masseys. A MF50, MF35, TO35, and others. I’m in southwest Indiana and if you and your missus ever wanted to show your collection I’d convince my wife to make a trip to Missouri, which is where you are, right? No matter what, keep the videos coming. I really appreciate you sharing your talents and experiences!

      Semper Fi my friend. Thanks for sharing your memories of your time on a 33. They too are very fine tractors, as you know, merely smaller versions of the 44. I appreciate all the kind words and thank you for watching for such a long time.
      Yes, we are in Missouri right south of good ol' St Louis. I'm afraid you wouldn't be too impressed with my old rusty stuff, I really don't have anything special except an Avery A that blows a ton of smoke and a totally dismantled Oliver 66 orchard. The rest are plain jane run of the mill regular tractors that we use off and on as needed. No matter though, we always enjoy a visit from others with similar interests as there's always a ton of stuff to talk about.
      I find it difficult to maintain steady tractor related vids because there are always so many things that occupy our time, but if I think its something of interest, I just set the camera up and try to make a video. Just yesterday I spent a few hours tarring the foundation, installing sock pipe and backfilling it for a shed we are building for one daughter. I didn't even think to set the camera up even though it was a good opportunity to. Lots of skidsteer time and I totally forgot about it !! Oh well, today is another day.
      Have a great day and who knows...we may get to share some time over coffee one of these days !!

    Love the crotch throttle M-H's. That placement just feels right and the notched quadrant never slips.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  2 місяці тому

      Me too. Both our 44's back on the home place had these throttles. I have a couple with the friction disc up top and I don't like them nearly as much. I also have two 44 parts tractors, a 101 Senior, Super and a Jr that has the notched cast iron throttle quadrant up top. Those are tolerable because we had that style on two tractors back home too. But I prefer the 'crotch' throttle by far.

    • @42lookc
      @42lookc 2 місяці тому

      @@tractorman4461 Yeah, the 100 & 200 Series and early 30, 44, & 44-6 and all the 81/82/20/20K/22/Colt/Mustang tractors had a passable steering column throttle much like an Oliver 60/66/77/88, but a little nicer. I liked the Oliver one, but there was no advance ratchet to them. Totally square notches, so every adjustment was a lift and shift. We had a Cockshutt 60 Row Crop when I was growing up so I was used to the Oliver throttle.
      That said, nothing ever felt as natural as my right hand dropping onto our 1950 44 Standard's crotch throttle to pull it a couple more notches for a heavier windrow on the baler or a hill on the disc or cultivator. In my humble opinion, the only throttle EVER more natural than a M-H crotch throttle is a foot throttle, but there's no setting a foot throttle. By itself, anyway. I thought they went backwards on the big friction disc throttle, not forwards.
      I've had scads and scads of tractors of all brands, but there's two things nothing else can deliver the satisfaction of, and Number One is the M-H crotch throttle, and a VERY close Number Two is that solid, satisfying crunch of shifting a 30, 33, 44, 44-6, or 44 Special into road gear. It puts a smile on my face even just thinking about it. 🙂 The transmissions in those tractors were just Masterpieces.

    Take a look at Lasersaber's ultracapacitor build. I use them in my old tractors and trucks and they are awesome. Way longer lasting than a battery. They work as a 6v or 12v with no changes. Let them go dead, freeze, whatever, leave them for years, charge them ( don't over volt), and you are good to go. Just don't have much reserve, so parasitic drains will drain them quick.

      Dont know who did it first. They are normally used in high draw sound systems with subwoofers to keep the electrical draw consistent. Otherwise the base hit causes lights to flash. Some of mine came from an electric train. The Maxwell and Eaton caps are the best, dont even bother with the Chinese ones.

    • @tractorman4461

I can't get a full 120* shift but at least it'll run a good sized 3 phase motor without over heating like single phasing will do. Thanks for the input. I looked them up and started reading about them to decide cost vs practicality and component availability.

    • @derweibhai
      @derweibhai 2 місяці тому

      @@tractorman4461 My cost is $250-300 per unit using 6 Maxwell 3000 Farad caps. It is a chunk of change, but considering that I was buying at least 1 new battery for my old junk per year at the $120-150 that they cost now that it would make at least a little financial sense. I can use 1 of these that weighs 8 lbs in my 6-71 powered International Fleetstar and it will even start in winter (can crank that engine 30-45 seconds until it dies). That same unit can be put in my 6V tractor and run just like any other battery. Never tried in a newer vehicle with all the parasitic drains. I did consider using a constant duty 12V solenoid and a switch as a cutoff hooked to the negative terminal.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  2 місяці тому +1

      I'll try to remember to do that Jan. But for now, this one is actually a 30. The 33 and 333 both had overhead valve engines of 201 and 208 cu inches. This little 30 only has a flathead 162 cubic inch.
      The 33 was rated around 27 or 28 hp on the drawbar, 36 on the pto and 39 on the flat belt. The 333 with 7 more cubic inches had the same drawbar rating, slightly more on the pto and flat belt. I think the weights were just about the same though so different tires probably could make a bit of difference in the field...don't know.
      The little 30 was only rated at 21 hp on the drawbar, 33 or so at the pto and 34 on the flat belt. They had essentially the same 5 speed transmission and final drive but probably slightly differrent ratios. But they all, including the 44's had 2 3/4'' rear axles and hubs so all the wheels and tires would interchange. That's all I can think of off the top of my head and if not exact, it's pretty close anyway.
      The previous owner stuck on a 333 sticker on the little guy, so it can be misleading to a guy. You have to look closer at the engine compartment to see the difference.

Then I use 7 x 10 tarps lengthways to stretch over the steering wheels and seats all the way to the smoke pipe (and farther on others) and the bungee cord holds the front end of the tarp very securely from blowing in the wind. Sheds water and snow quite well. My wood shed has one empty compartment so two of the 30's have taken temporary residence in there. (-: No tarps. Yay.
