Rugby *was* America's primary football sport until Walter Camp and later the president. For example, Camp was a big reason obstruction of legalised in the American game. Also, Rugby Leage has Camp to thank for a number of its law differences from Union.
The dark team's punt formation is actually pretty advanced. They spread the field, there's multiple layers of pre-snap movement. If only it didn't take someone 50 years to apply those principles to offense.
Hi there, I'm currently filming a documentary on the history of a local high school here in Cincinnati and wanted to see if I could use some of these clips for it? We are taking it all the way back to when the program first started in the 30s and this video is perfect.
I love history, especially with respect to old vintage football. But its amazing the crowds that came to watch this level of football! Seriously, the talent is not much better than good high school teams today! But this was football in its infancy....gotta love it! Jeff S.
@@awesomeautistartist8628 Totally true, thats the biggest misconception so many people have. These guys aren't gonna hit eachother head to head because they would die....
@@Adam-sk8np yep lol. People in these comment sections always complain about the lack of helmets in these old football videos and they love to say that modern football is safer with the advent of modern headgear, and that just makes me laugh; we live in a world where equally brutal (and obviously related) sports like rugby, Aussie rules and Gaelic football are played without helmets, yet CTE only seems to exist in American and Canadian football, and yet no one here ever seems to make the connection that it is quite literally *BECAUSE OF HELMETS* that North American football is so dangerous... absolutely ridiculous. I hope more people wake up to this reality sooner rather than later; gridiron doesn’t need helmets to be good, and their removal should be something seriously considered-especially since helmets are why the game is so stupidly dangerous.
@@GrandmasterDinnerRollA lot of People haven't made that connections because those people are somewhat intelligent and aren't midwits who just parrot any bandwagon theory without critically thinking about them. The helmets were brought into the game because players were dying. You also made the connection with rugby and other football codes around the world like other bandwagoners without ever watching a game and knowing anything about them because if you did, you'd know that rugby(union in particular) has a worse concussion rate than current American football despite the rule of shoulder tackles being outlawed and 95% of the tackles behind head on and not blindsided. The reason American football had such a massive CTE problem is because of the nature of the game not the helmets. The amount of blindside hits even shoulder to shoulder would have killed players if not for the padding and helmets. Not to mention the blocks to the neck and area would have paralysed players especially lineman. Sorry if I came a bit harsh in the reply. I didn't mean it on you personally atleast.
They would punt on 2and or 3rd down sometimes to try and catch the other team off guard. Points were hard to come by and sadly the punt was thought of to be just as good of and offensive play/strategy as a pass.... crazy
The ball was heavier and much rounder in those days. It was easier to carry and kick but much harder to throw. While the forward pass had been legal for 24 years at this point, it didn't really become a factor in football until the end of the decade when shape of the ball was changed to something easier to throw and closer to today's.
Double wing vs single wing. Dudes could really punt the ball well for being so long ago. Defense obviously what players practiced most and was at a premium in these days.
This shows the difference between American football in the times which looked more like rugby (by the way players tackled opponents which was safer). Now, they're just trying to beat the shit out of the opponent.
I think in regards to player safety, the NFL needs to revisit tackling. The hits in modern international rugby, are just as brutal as those in NFL (search courtney lawes), but the amount of injuries per game is so much fewer.
+falcons1988 There are probably three main reasons why injuries are higher in American football than rugby: 1. Rugby union involves about 35 minutes of live-ball play for a game that takes less than two hours, with very limited substitutions. American football, on the other hand, only involves 11-12 minutes of action spread out over three hours with free substitutions, and few if any players play much more than half the plays in a game. Therefore, rugby players have to pace themselves more and cannot give their all to every hit. 2. Again because they have to play much more, rugby players have to have much higher physical endurance. This means they cannot be as huge and strong as NFL players. 3. Because American football players wear pads and helmets, they make hits that rugby players would not be foolhardy enough to attempt. The pads and helmets do also prevent many minor injuries, but they do not prevent most serious ones except for broken skulls.
A couple of guys still playing without helmets in 1930!!! And I never knew that offensive linemen in Old School Football were allowed to get set, move, and reset pre-snap. It looks super weird to our eyes, having watched a move in which the slightest flinch draws a 5 yard penalty...
The game is so fucking slow, i know modern athletes are a million miles from what they had back then in terms of regime but even still where did they get the players from, the qtb from a bar, certainly throws like he has
Yeah, well. Without this "ridiculous" display of football, we wouldn't have the modern game. That's what makes the evolution of football so fucking great!
Adam Hagen you obviously are immature and have no respect for history...thats like saying the Model T car was ridiculous just because it was an early forerunner of the cars we have now
It’s just sweeps, counters, reverses, and dives. I love this stuff and watching old time football. Those guys are the greats

I'm actually surprised at how similar it is to modern football. I was expecting it to be unrecognizable.
Watch modern rugby union. That looks like old American football

I spotted about 23 penalties in this video. Talk about time change
Better quality than a lot of 80s & 90s tape.
I was dieing to see some snaps by the sideline w no hashmarks!! Love it ty
They actually had special formations and plays for those situations. It was kinda fun...
The dark team's punt formation is actually pretty advanced. They spread the field, there's multiple layers of pre-snap movement. If only it didn't take someone 50 years to apply those principles to offense.
looks like a whole lot of punting
Judging by how short football is once you cut out all the stuff between plays and the breaks at the half, this may be the entire game.
@AintNoWay the ref had the clock but like you said the tempo was faster & delay of game was almost never called.
Crazy to see guys out there with no helmet.
love it, leatherheads! thanks for the post!
I like how people in this comment section is comparing this to modern football. Basically too different sports.
Not at all. The essentials of the game have not changed.

i bet playbooks were a lot easier to learn back then
these guys knew how to tackle, thats for sure
And and they didn’t know how to catch that’s for fucking sure..dudes had butterfingers
Seriously? Its 2015! Was this filmed with a flip phone?!
+Dylan Atkins Well, it wasn't a steadicam...

Those are wing backs passing not QB's as we have them. They also all played both ways!😊

Did they punt after every down back then?

Back then kicking it to opposite team in their zone and trying to force a t.o was an easier strategy then just advancing down the field to score
crazy to see how similar it is to todays football
I guess no spread offense back then. You would think they put one guy way out to the side for at least a throw.
So no one ever tried a forward pass?
the video shows some forward passes

why are they always punting on 2nd down?
It’s edited.
It wasnt uncommon back then to punt the ball on 3rd down. With how little offensive yards were gained, field position was massive.
Omg I remember watching this game at my grandparents house. That's when players were tough. No steroids just spinich.
