I haven't looked this up, but based on random knowledge I have no 2 actors can have the same registered name. For instance John C Reilly has to use the middle initial because a John Reilly has already made films. It's EXTREMELY possible that "William Dafoe" was a pre-existing actor, so to give himself a better chance at standing apart he decided to use Willem.
nah. his dad was also william and he wanted to get some separation in a creative way. there might be some weird thing with the screen actors guild about stage names, but at the same time there are two actresses named michelle williams so there’s clearly not a hard rule
