In this installment, I modify an SCPH-70012 PS2 Slim. I demonstrate a variety of technique's that will aid you in achieving a very clean, professional look. Also covered is a laser protection method that will prevent your optical-laser from self-destruction. I haven't done this particular model in a few years, so it was kind of fun to go back!
If you're interested in the Matrix PIC Fix, Google it.

*@**7:42** Xtra credit info: See how regular strippers are made, with the corresponding AWG groove? Take you nail clippers, and slowly clip a guitar string, or similar "hardened" wire (staples work well) and viola! Your nail clippers have a precision groove. You can even make both sides & middle different gauges.*

even though I love the PS2, sales dont mean quality. Pop stars sell millions of tickets and songs because they are everywhere; many trash movies like Suicide Squad sell a lot of tickets because of marketing; Knack sold really well because it was the only family oriented launch title for the PS4 even though it is awfully mediocre and launch titles sell well because many people purchase any game without knowing how it is just to properly use the console... Many things are not appreciated by people for a lot of reasons, unfortunately quality alone is not enough. The PS2 at the time seemed like the best purchase as far as I see: multimedia out of the box, gaming and retrocompatibility. GameCube and Dreamcast were cheaper, but the least valuable, it just played games (DC played music, but it wasnt a huge thing when it released unlike Saturn and PS) . Xbox had DVD beside gaming, but it was clunky, requiring a remote and adaptor to work, so many people didnt immediately knew that function and when someone did, it was an added cost. It doesnt mean that their competitors lacked worthwhile experiences.

I remember way back doing modchip installs when I was a kid and making huge $ for it back then. I learned on forums and from pictures about using superglue and man did it make a huge difference in work cleanliness. Not that the customers ever saw it, well some wanted a picture and it always blew their minds on how many wires there was and how it was so cleanly done.
I also had a LOT of customers come from a chinese mall who had a chip installed say 6 months earlier that stopped working, I'd open it up to cold solder joints everywhere, wires had fallen off, you name it they did it.
I would get paid full price to remove and reinstall with all new wiring, etc. Even funnier was how many people came to me modded from elsewhere and it would be one of those Magic 3.1 clones (Some of you will remember Magic 3.1 :D)
I usually stuck to the matrix chip or DMS3 for those of you who remember.

I modded my PS2 with the same chip but I believe it was yellow.. Never in my life did I think I'd ever be successful in actually getting it to work but I was lucky and it ran perfect for years.. I had to use a magnifying glass and a lot of patience.. I don't think I could ever do another mod chip install again ever, but you make it look easy as pie!! I think it took me nearly 4 or 5 hours to actually get it installed over several days having to walk away from it.. I lost a piece of myself with that experience that I'll never be able to get back.. Thanks so much for sharing in this video and great work - you routed the patch wiring very well. However, may I make a few suggestions as a veteran of PCB rework? 1) It's usually simpler to prepare and route the wiring loom and presolder the harness onto any daughterboard assemblies, which you can do just by measuring the routes on the board using a fibreglass tape measure (the dressmaking type sort). You can get much better point-to-point solder joints onto pads when doing this flat on the bench, leaving some length allowance. 2) Then you cut the ends of the harness at the jumper points on the mainboard as you solder each connection which is much easier and doesn't involve trying to solder bent conductor ends. 3) I recommend avoiding any adhesives in PCB rework, even on the jumper wires, because there can be unexpected chemical reactions under temperature from them. I recommend using fabric rework tape or Kapton tape as it also has the advantage of being able to be easily cut and repositioned, and individual conductors in a harness can be brought up through Kapton tape by using the point of a scalpel. Just a few thoughts!

Very nice work. With that being said, I don't care enough to make a system of my own that nice. Just as long as it works.

    Hey!
Well... i am a [64] "Tech-Hippie-Punk" from Germany...and...still love the PS2...cause my Pension is not that big to own a PS4.
Just found U when searchin 4 modding the SCPH 90004...
    What i essentially wanted to say...by typing this is;
I really watched a LOT of Vids in the Past... on soldering, modding & finally: TEACHING!
If it would be possible... i give you 10 Stars for your whole work!!!
    Grrrreat Job Kid!!!!
    Really WELL DONE in total!!!
Thx for what U DO HERE.
You're one FINE example for what a TU-TO-RI-AL could 'n SHOULD look like:
    - NO loud Music...when talking...which does NOT add ANY useful Effect on ...learning!!
    - ULTRA-sharp filming!
    - clear, friendly Voice!
    - Overal exact Image-SECTIONs 4 the actual Topic you're talking about!
Well... i never EVER wanna schmooze u... just really MEAN all i wrote! Sorry if my english grammar isn't da best.
    As i said; i'm german.
    Keep ON doing... like THIS.
    Thanks AGAIN.
    By the way:
Can u recommend a Soldering-Station/Tool that isn't THAT expensive... but DOES a good Job... specially with those small Parts... like u do on this MB???
May be you're so kind and post a link to an Onlineshop?
    Love and Peace,
    Cos
P.S.: ....another "Sorry" for the term "Kid". That... just was mean FRIENDLY
    🤘🏼😎✌🏼

Just saw I have a 70012 slim. Randomly ordered a fmcb memory card off ebay for some nostalgia, might end up hard modding it now after seeing this.
