In this installment, I modify an SCPH-70012 PS2 Slim. I demonstrate a variety of technique's that will aid you in achieving a very clean, professional look. Also covered is a laser protection method that will prevent your optical-laser from self-destruction. I haven't done this particular model in a few years, so it was kind of fun to go back!
If you're interested in the Matrix PIC Fix, Google it.

>Alright, one more video before bed
>40 mins later, finish watching that random video of a PS2 being modded
yup
👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
True af
Me too 😂
on vacation in spain, same shit here
Am I the only one who loves the clicking sounds of never-removed screws.
Only way to get it back is over-torque. And then nobody's happy. Lol
Only thing more satisfying than the sound is the feeling of that *crack* as you 'break the seal' of them.
This guy plays awesome retro games music while he works which is awesome just brings back and gives you that awesome nostalgic feel to when we were kids in the 1980's and 1990's 😁
i'm the only one who thinks, that he is like the bob ross of the electronics?, it's too relaxing seeing him work
Alexandr Sandoval i agree, just missing that ‘fro!!
Kinda. I'd prefer some small talk over chiptune, dont get me wrong I like it, but it would make it a bit more Bob Ross
I quite literally had the same impression, which is probably why this is the 8th video in a row ive watched D:
He should have wired in a happy little tree.
I only thought of Bob Ross when watching because he kept saying things like "this is going to live here" just like Bob.
That moment when you solder your own finger...and don't flinch. That's Pro AF.
Voultar: The Bob Ross of Soldering. Seriously though this channel is my zen place, just wish I had hands as steady as yours lol.
*@**7:42** Xtra credit info: See how regular strippers are made, with the corresponding AWG groove? Take you nail clippers, and slowly clip a guitar string, or similar "hardened" wire (staples work well) and viola! Your nail clippers have a precision groove. You can even make both sides & middle different gauges.*
HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP Holy crap i thought i was the only one who did this.
The only one? Out of +7 Billion People? That would be some fucked up odds, wouldn't it? Well- now we know 2 out of +7 Billion. Nice to meet ya.
Well now there's a lot more than you three doing this lol.
Amazing video, very relaxing to watch. Beyond my skill level, but still very entertaining.
It's great to see someone demonstrate soldering techniques and know how. I love it!
Your soldering is hypnotizing. The attention to detail is immaculate. Im subscribed as heck
"We'll begin by breaking the unit down"
"Sony didn't love you"
"You'll never be as good as the Xbox"
"You're not slim, you're anorexic"
There, that should do it!
whoooooooosh
even though I love the PS2, sales dont mean quality. Pop stars sell millions of tickets and songs because they are everywhere; many trash movies like Suicide Squad sell a lot of tickets because of marketing; Knack sold really well because it was the only family oriented launch title for the PS4 even though it is awfully mediocre and launch titles sell well because many people purchase any game without knowing how it is just to properly use the console... Many things are not appreciated by people for a lot of reasons, unfortunately quality alone is not enough. The PS2 at the time seemed like the best purchase as far as I see: multimedia out of the box, gaming and retrocompatibility. GameCube and Dreamcast were cheaper, but the least valuable, it just played games (DC played music, but it wasnt a huge thing when it released unlike Saturn and PS) . Xbox had DVD beside gaming, but it was clunky, requiring a remote and adaptor to work, so many people didnt immediately knew that function and when someone did, it was an added cost. It doesnt mean that their competitors lacked worthwhile experiences.
@@lonelyspirit9532 didnt have to get technical its was a joke lol
r/whooooosh
Sony peeps don't like when you remind them the Xbox murdered the PS2 when it came to everything but game titles...
sometimes i watch voultar videos to see how many times he nearly burned his finger off with the iron
those midis take me back to the broke but happy me teenage years, all those teams developing serials and more back in the day on the infancy of the internet with no one spying your activities or tracking your every movement, times when we didn't have to use VPN's precisely the times of the ps1 to ps2 transition.
dubmood 4 life
when he was finishing, i was like its been 35 minutes already??!! i could have watched him for another hour easily... I agree with the other comment about him being the "Bob Ross" of soldering... even my girlfriend watched it with me, both of us captivated by his technique... so very relaxing to watch this guy work...
Ivan Baez boi do you have a good gf if she was actually enjoying it
@@karoliskazlauskas1213 for sure
I have to say, you do some of the cleanest solder and wire work I've ever seen. Great job 👍
You haven't seen much then.
Man this is fantastic ... I'm an electrical engineering student but I know little about digital hardware from my studying ... we just study basics in some sections of our courses or basic courses about this topic. I wish I could learn more ... keep going 👍🏻
Man your mods are SO neat. Beautiful. I dearly wish I could get my PS2 modded; I've done most of my other machines but I don't dare touch my PS2 due to how insane the mod is!
This is my first time watching one of your videos, and I have to say.... That solder job, OH MY GOD THAT SOLDER JOB, the best I have ever seen, you make soldering and wiring art!
Damn dude. This music. So good! I put this on in the background just to do my own soldering.
Great vid and an amazing job on that Modbo mod! I recently did it myself a few months ago on my slim and boy do I wish I had this video to reference for the lacquer removal tip alone! Not to mention your superb wire routing haha
I remember way back doing modchip installs when I was a kid and making huge $ for it back then. I learned on forums and from pictures about using superglue and man did it make a huge difference in work cleanliness. Not that the customers ever saw it, well some wanted a picture and it always blew their minds on how many wires there was and how it was so cleanly done.
I also had a LOT of customers come from a chinese mall who had a chip installed say 6 months earlier that stopped working, I'd open it up to cold solder joints everywhere, wires had fallen off, you name it they did it.
I would get paid full price to remove and reinstall with all new wiring, etc. Even funnier was how many people came to me modded from elsewhere and it would be one of those Magic 3.1 clones (Some of you will remember Magic 3.1 :D)
I usually stuck to the matrix chip or DMS3 for those of you who remember.
Eyem1337 hi , is it possible to expand rams or cpu in phones like above ?
What mods? There are mods that do things differently that others. Many people just use them to play backups/pirated games.
Where did you live? Maybe I was your customer.
Still running a Matrix Infinity I installed when I was about 15! I run through OPL though as all my backups are now on ext hdd. Ahh those were the days. My iron was massive too, so had to blutac scalpel blades in between IC contacts to stop overflow.
@@juve3030 okay mister FCC, slow down there, you're not gunna get this guy
Well done. Man does this bring back memories!
Your mods are so clean
I don't know why but it makes me smile :D
admire your work so clean
Voultar you Sir are my soldering hero. Thank you!
Really nice stuff. I spent time watching. My engineering skills are pre-school but I lived vicariously and insightfully through this video. haha.
Your videos made me click that bell. I need to see more of this
It's so satisfying the way solder beads up on the pads.
Voultar You have some wonderful techniques NICE!!
I'm so glad I stumbled across this channel. It's criminal that you don't have more subscribers!
Wow, nice job! I remember modding a few Playstations back in like 1998. Back then the mod chips i used didnt come on a nice IC like these, it was just a straight silicon chip you soldered directly to. very primitive compared to something like this, but it worked and we were happy. I cant remember the exact mod chip model we used. Fun stuff....
I love your 8 bit sound tracks!
Thanks for the vid Voultar. Couldn't have done the install without the help.
love the chosen music for this vid!
Good to see you back.
Im impressed, delicate and precise soldering is a royal pain in ass, I've tried many times to fix a DS fuse and failed everytime (3mm fuses) you manage to keep the work tidy in such a tiny area.... patience and practice is key here, great job.
this soldering work should really make an appearance in one of those satisfying to watch videos
Great, now Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is stuck in my head! I thank you good sir. Epic chip tune troll!
I love how during one delicate section of the video, the chiptune version or Careless Whisper plays.
Guessing all joysticks in the workshop got proper hard.
Watching this video is like watching arts, or listening to a relaxing song, electronics got fun!!!
Such beautifully run wires that will never be seen again ;)
Awesome work dude ✌️
the matrix pic fix, that little resistor is crazy
love that tracklist! :D
I modded my PS2 with the same chip but I believe it was yellow.. Never in my life did I think I'd ever be successful in actually getting it to work but I was lucky and it ran perfect for years.. I had to use a magnifying glass and a lot of patience.. I don't think I could ever do another mod chip install again ever, but you make it look easy as pie!! I think it took me nearly 4 or 5 hours to actually get it installed over several days having to walk away from it.. I lost a piece of myself with that experience that I'll never be able to get back.. You did a fantastic job and I commend your abilities!!
Uhhh....Your friend Bill looks just like AlphaOmegaSin
I saw all you videos last months and you methodology is very sharp and clear.
Just have to thank you to share your knowledge and experience on this systems.
Btw I read in old Dreamcast forum, that you made the most perfect HDD install. The picture were already gone unfortunately.
I can see the patience in his hands.. Such a pro.
Amazing. Wish I had that kind of knowledge and skills. Thank you.
And now I've discovered Toni Leys, cheers solder champ.
Amazing skills!
You make it seem easy to do... it's even relaxing.
Love how you work on systems
Youre the bob ross of modding consoles, I feel like. Fantastic install video, thank you for posting! :D What songs are used here? Your music choices are all pretty great too!
E: D'oh, if the track-list was there initially in the description, I completely missed it. Apologies.
some nice clean work
very intimidating lookin mods but fascinating to watch
i did this mod back in 06 on my slim ps2. still works to this day
Good stuff dude, Glad you're passing on the knowledge on to the folks! PS2 is getting hot now, I get a ton of request to mod them as well. I have a feeling you will be revisiting it again, lol.
Thanks for the great video. I completed the same mod a few minutes ago. My cable management does not look quite as nice as yours, but I am satisfied with the first attempt.
Complete EXPLOSION!
love your channel and lol on the compleet explosion you almost should of used a post effect of a explosion on it
Really diggin these chipTunes!
Your soldering is beautiful. Pls make a video teaching your tips and tricks. I've subbed due to this video 🔥
I came for the ps2 mod but stayed for the keygen music
Years ago i tried this Mod. If i knew now, what i knew then, a fiberglass pen. I got all the wires hooked up but couldn't get the solder to stick to those points above. Someday i may try it again! I was so close to doing it...
Love it good as always!
Perfect music choice!
Very clean wiring mod!
There's 1 mod you didn't do, that i wish you did. The IDE/SATA mod for the ps2 slim 700xx models. Your mod work is beautiful of course. I've just always wanted to put a small HDD/SSD into a ps2 slim.
I want it for FlashCard,to optimise transfer rate, but especially to save space, on a portable ps2 project for example.
I've done a few of those. I think back then the mod came with a slim case as well.
@@leo197777 there is only a hdd mod so far I know I moded many ps2 and slim versions with dms 4 pro chip (I think is the best chip for both ps2 and slim versions!) That modbo chip is a clone from matrix !
Regards,
@@lycanlycans7548 No not,no need to chip the console, fmcb for hdd is sufficient with software suit (hdloader, swapmagic, gsm for upscale...and others),i having one fat with sata-adapter-network for sony ps2 working good for all games all regions. But for the ps1 backups other regions i have breaker pro. For slim ps2 console you can play games via usb port only for the moment, limit the bandwidth, but playable.
Well not the only mod for the slim...i thinked to put the flashcard adapter for the best transfert rate but i don't know yet how to do it.
@@lycanlycans7548 I have much console, all having chip but useless for the ps2 and the gamecube (prefer gecko or sd memory card with sd2ps2 adapter for the best). I prefer this because you can have different clockwork with chip or smallest problem with it on this 2 128bit console.
This is art
Excellent soldering techniques.
beatiful work
I have no idea what is happening. But it's fun to watch. 🙂
play station 11 confirmed 23:24
HAHAHA looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
PS5? Hell no
5:45 ps5 confirmed
i used to make these jokes when fixing my friends ps2s, the ps3 was still semi-new (2012 so a few years old) and alot of my friends still had the ps2 and even the nintendo 64.
Those are circuit board locations for ICP fuses. "PS", as in "Power Supply".
AWESOME video, thank you.
Subbed for the awesome beats. 😀
When I heard Mental Delivrance, chills through my whole body
Nice clean mod! One of the harder systems to mod imo - just based on the large number of wires and small vias.
My thoughts as well!
Looks scary to me!
I agree! It can be a tough mod to do. And a REALLY tough mod to do, proper!
Or just softmod it and keep an original and clean console imho
I did this once and my PS2 didn't turn on. Later I found out that the punks who sold the mod chip didn't include a thick wire for power. Either that or I screwed up everything and brick my PS2.
Bob Ross would be proud of you. Relaxing to watch. :)
Very nice!
Super clean
Great video bud
Thanks so much for sharing in this video and great work - you routed the patch wiring very well. However, may I make a few suggestions as a veteran of PCB rework? 1) It's usually simpler to prepare and route the wiring loom and presolder the harness onto any daughterboard assemblies, which you can do just by measuring the routes on the board using a fibreglass tape measure (the dressmaking type sort). You can get much better point-to-point solder joints onto pads when doing this flat on the bench, leaving some length allowance. 2) Then you cut the ends of the harness at the jumper points on the mainboard as you solder each connection which is much easier and doesn't involve trying to solder bent conductor ends. 3) I recommend avoiding any adhesives in PCB rework, even on the jumper wires, because there can be unexpected chemical reactions under temperature from them. I recommend using fabric rework tape or Kapton tape as it also has the advantage of being able to be easily cut and repositioned, and individual conductors in a harness can be brought up through Kapton tape by using the point of a scalpel. Just a few thoughts!
Ummm, that "tamper-proof tab" is just the plate that the vertical stand screws into. Neat video, tho'
was about to say this.
Very nice work. With that being said, I don't care enough to make a system of my own that nice. Just as long as it works.
Fantastic!
Wow, what a great friend.
You sir are the Bob Ross of console mods.
dude, outstanding music 👍
Love the 8 Bit music!
Bravo Maestro! ;)
That "tamper-proof tab" is actually what the vertical stand screws into
lol didn't realize this was a brand-spankin new video until i saw the HDRV cable :P
You're an Artist
Hey!
Well... i am a [64] "Tech-Hippie-Punk" from Germany...and...still love the PS2...cause my Pension is not that big to own a PS4.
Just found U when searchin 4 modding the SCPH 90004...
What i essentially wanted to say...by typing this is;
I really watched a LOT of Vids in the Past... on soldering, modding & finally: TEACHING!
If it would be possible... i give you 10 Stars for your whole work!!!
Grrrreat Job Kid!!!!
Really WELL DONE in total!!!
Thx for what U DO HERE.
You're one FINE example for what a TU-TO-RI-AL could 'n SHOULD look like:
- NO loud Music...when talking...which does NOT add ANY useful Effect on ...learning!!
- ULTRA-sharp filming!
- clear, friendly Voice!
- Overal exact Image-SECTIONs 4 the actual Topic you're talking about!
Well... i never EVER wanna schmooze u... just really MEAN all i wrote! Sorry if my english grammar isn't da best.
As i said; i'm german.
Keep ON doing... like THIS.
Thanks AGAIN.
By the way:
Can u recommend a Soldering-Station/Tool that isn't THAT expensive... but DOES a good Job... specially with those small Parts... like u do on this MB???
May be you're so kind and post a link to an Onlineshop?
Love and Peace,
Cos
P.S.: ....another "Sorry" for the term "Kid". That... just was mean FRIENDLY
🤘🏼😎✌🏼
Just saw I have a 70012 slim. Randomly ordered a fmcb memory card off ebay for some nostalgia, might end up hard modding it now after seeing this.
You know a lot of good chiptune artist i see ;)
Nice cable routing
Fuck you do some tidy work! Love it brother!
i love your video..i see and relax total .. nice mod chip is very hard setup
