  • Now that this is no longer a surprise... SURPRISE!!!! That's really meant to be aimed at a couple people, but I had purchased, refurbished, and modified this console as a surprise for a friend of mine getting married. I had to sit on this surprise for a while but now that it can be revealed to the world... Here it is! I picked up this system in working but rough condition with the idea of doing exactly what I stated earlier. After some time spent getting the system to a presentable state and modified with FreeMCBoot and a hard drive, it was ready to be delivered! I documented the process here start to finish and thought you all would enjoy the transformation.

      Capacitors

    • @edwinj223
      @edwinj223 7 років тому +2

      If you take the battery out it just wont keep time when unplugged, and the capacitor will maybe last a day(guess). But I wouldn't go through the trouble, because it's easier just to re-setup the time again. I don't know other than that. But you could add like a capacitor array which lasts longer. just an idea. Seems like a lot of work. Good Question

    • @edwinj223
      @edwinj223 6 років тому +1

      No man, is fucking impossible to replace a CMOS battery, you have to unscrew bolts, and remove plates, and remove plasic screw cover tabs, prey to ghod that your CMOS battery doesn't break.

    You could have washed the plastic parts in the sink right after the gutting without any problems.
    If you are worried about the electronics afterwards, you can use distilled water or isopropyl alchool ( i use a mixture of the two in a half/half solution. I also use it to clean displays ). It will evaporate without any problems.

      depends on how you're modding it mate.
      If it's downgrading , you need hardware flasher.
      If it's installing a 3key, it's just clip and go (on older units).
      If it's cfw'ing a 3.55 unit, follow instructions, you'll be fine.

    Why didn't you clean the case when you had it apart?

  • @gagbabgerwer5883
    @gagbabgerwer5883 7 років тому +35

    to start off with loved the video great format and nice to see your first time taking it apart! though there are some issues important if you are following this tutorial IMPORTANT! 99% isopropol alcohol is very caustic to many plastics such as ABS ( although most of the ps2 plastic is ok, its way safer to use a lower percentage alcohol) it will completely destroy it after being in contact with it for a short time and make it so brittle that slight touches will simply cause it to fracture and fall apart, AWESOME for metal though like cleaning the top of the processor on the board and whatnot. Secondly the dvd portion of the PS2 laser is what you really want to test as it get hotter and usually goes out before the PS1 reader and with he way the lenses are set up it can sometimes take the PS1 CD reader with it. Third, its good practice once you remove the heat-sync, especially when its this old to add a few dabs of thermal compound to all the pads on the heat sync, especially if you have taken it apart multiple times (wait to put on the thermal compound till the last time), to ensure it adheres to the processing units (mine died due to heat because i did not do this and my thermal pads where in bad shape and didn't pay attention) .

    • @cardinaloflannagancr8929
      @cardinaloflannagancr8929 7 років тому +1

      Thats's true very and it's odd to have it on hand anyway as in many areas it is not easy to find. He probably had it on hand for some other required use. Yes the thermal compound is a very good to replace while you're in there it's one less thing to worry about.

    • @zzzhuh
      @zzzhuh 6 років тому +1

      Where can you even find 99%? They don't sell it in stores, the closest is 91% as far as I'm aware.

    • @Trevoorheees
      @Trevoorheees 6 років тому

      zzzhuh late reply buuuuttt 99% iso is electrical grade, it's found at electronics stores like Frys Electronics .ect works like paint stripper it's way to good

    • @iamtheflu
      @iamtheflu 6 років тому

      either way, its not that serious. i use denatured alcohol which is way more harsh than 99% iso. unless you soak the plastic in a container of the alcohol, its not going to stick around long enough to damage it. get back at me when you use lighter fluid to remove sticker residue from laptop cases.

    Been cleaning up old systems as well lately. If you want a tip to make things look finished and new again when you are done thoroughly cleaning, I put a little moisturizing hand cream or lotion on the plastic, and buff it in. Gives it a touch of a shine, and even fends off some dust and lint, etc. I used Nivea cream myself.
    I buff it until there is little to no residue with a soft cloth or paper towel, and it turns out rather nice. It does help restore the appearance of the plastic some, especially after using alcohol to clean. I wish I had before and after pictures of a PS2 I did a couple months back. It looked like it was in a restaurant's garbage pail for about 6 months, and by the time I finished up with it, it looked genuinely brand new again. It still does too.
    In any case, figured I'd mention it, in case you may want to just give it a shot sometime on something, and see how you may like it.

    I love collecting old systems. Especially Playstations. I currently have 8 PS1s, around 9 PS2 Fats, and 5 PS2 slims. I've thoroughly cleaned and refurbished all of them. I once found a cardboard box with 4 PS2s in it and like 6 games outside a Goodwill at 1am one night.........UPDATE: Hey guys listen. I donate to the Goodwill on a weekly basis. I also purchase many items including Playstations from Goodwill. I give back and support them in many ways. The night I saw the 4 PS2s I was donating 2 huge boxes of clothing and knick knacks. I looked at it as a trade. Ive spent $1000s at the Goodwill. By the way. The Goodwill is privately owned. They make 100% profit off donated items. Do some research before calling me a theif.

      In the style of Feed the World, here comes FEEL THE GUILT!
      Sing along now....
      It's Christmas time, there's no need to steal them away.
      At Christmas time, you took them all just to have a play.
      But in this Goodwill of plenty, you have taken away the joy.
      Give them back for kids to play, at Christmas time.
      But share a PS2 and give it to the other ones,
      At Christmas time, it's hard, but you are the one having all the fun!
      There's four Playstations in a box outside a window
      How could someone leave them there, how odd, how queer!
      Where the only place they are following
      Is back to yours for beer
      And the Christmas bells that you'll hear
      Will be ones of sadness and gloom
      Because tonight, they can't have a game because of you!!!
      There won't be playstations in their house from Santa this Chritsmas time
      The only person with a gift is you, from stealing them from outside
      Four playstations in a row
      In a box you took, thinking no one would ever know
      You have ruined 4 Christmas times! Appalled!!!
      1,2,3,4...
      Give them back....
      Give them back to Goodwill all four
      Give them ba-a-a-ck
      Give them back four Playstation consoles
      Give them back...
      Give them back their consoles tonight
      (I hope everytime you hear Do They Know it's Christmas you feel the guilt of stealing 4 Playstation concoles from 4 unhappy children. Or maybe even from a kids hospital ward, or from handicapped kids who would have had so much fun with one of those consoles. Or a youth center.......)

    Cool video. Freemcboot is suggested to work better with original memory cards and difference consoles might need different versions but to get the best out of the fat PS2 you might want to get an IDE to SD adapter and get a big sd card to put a lot of games in. It also makes the ps2 lighter and less vulnerable to shakes and stuff.

    I really don't understand why he didn't just clean the outside of the system when everything was disassembled. I would've just run every single plastic piece under water and thoroughly clean them, even the metal shield parts that have no electronics on them. So I don't understand why he didn't just do that. It would've come out almost as clean as brand new.

    I got a softmodded (and maybe hardmodded -- never opened it up to check) original Xbox from my mom's friend like 7 years ago. My favorite thing in the world since I was too poor to afford the Xbox 360 or PS3 that were new at the time. It had a whole bunch of games from different consoles, only remember playing Shenmue 2 on it though. Still wish I had it :( I have a stock original Xbox that I plan on soft and hard modding so I can play the Japanese version of Jet Set Radio Future on it :D

      Just2Options? Irrational: FearOrExuberance?
      It depends on your model, but I'd rather not 'steal' it from USB. The PS2 has quite some spots you can use use for this approach. You can find a lot of them by looking at modchip-installation-diagramms (ignore those which patch the CDVD-Controller and 'BOOT ROM' (a.k.a. 'BIOS').
      ...and if you use a capacitor, then you probably would need 2-3 more parts as well.
      I suggest you to register at some console-specific forum if you are interested in console-mods/hacks/developing/etc.

      www.assemblergames.com (modding, in-deep hacking, dumps and easier stuff, but a lot development-related not specialized on any particular hardware but consoles/handhelds/etc.)

      Some games play at 720p, others can be forced into 720p, but forcing games into those higher resolutions can be hit or miss. I normally force my 480i games into 480p and then upscale it using the Framemeister.

This only affected the player 1 slot not player 2. Will taking apart and cleaning with the alcohol help? Is there another fix? On a fat PS2, once you've installed to HDD, can you take out the FMB memory card? And with a slim PS2, can you have it load over SMB and remove the FMB memory card? I'd prefer to keep the FMB memory card aside once it's done its job in case I need it in future. I want to minimise the chance of it getting corrupted, plus it will free up both slots for regular saves.

    I think the battery that keeps the internal clock going when the power switch is off is dead in that PS2. In the browser, there should be the little light balls moving in a circle when the clock is going. When they're all bunched up on each other, the time is not set. When you set the time, initially it won't let you change anything so you have to just accept the default, then you'll be able to set the time. If the time is lost when the system is unpowered (generally left unpowered overnight), then the battery needs to be replaced.

    Lovely video however i have question:
    I currently own 2 ps2's: 1 silver fat & 1 fat black
    I have a problem with the black one, when i play games, its like the console struggles to read the disc, the game sometimes freezes and unfreezes and everytime you boot up the black one, it does not read the game disc immediately. Some say that its the "laser" of the console.
    With the silver console everything runs smoothly: game boots up immedietely and there is no freezing
    What do you think is wrong with the black one?

    Just picked up a used FAT PS2 on eBay, that I'm going to soft-mod. Paid £12.00 for it; including postage (about the same in USD). Comes with two controllers, the Composite and power cables. The reason it was so cheap was because the controllers are old and one doesn't work, and the disc tray only comes out somewhat and has to be pulled out the rest of the way; but I reckon I can fix that easily by opening it up, and following a few of these videos. The system plays games fine; so not bad at all. Just need a SATA drive (Seagate), a faux network adapter with SATA port by Game Star, and a Memory Card with the latest version of FreeMCBoot installed on it. The system was apparently just sitting in storage for a while; should be good condition. So, it'll be great for some retro gaming and playing backups of all of my best PS2 collection that I could never part with from when I was a kid. Still have my slim too, for general normal disc use. I'll just pick up some 3rd party controllers from Elgetec; £10.00 for two, or I may even buy the FORGOTTEN PS1 Dual Controllers that's most similar to the PS4 controller with its longer hand grips and concave thumbsticks, but missing rumble which I won't miss. I just need to find a good solution to hook it up to a modern HDTV - I was thinking Composite (EDIT: I MEANT 'Component') or a Pound HDMI cable; or maybe the dirt cheap Chinese PS2toHDMI dongle adapter? What do you think? A Framemeister, OSSC, MCable and MClassic are way out of my budget unfortunately; otherwise they'd be solid choices.

    Man, I wish I still had my fat PS2 for easy softmodding and HDD use. The disc drive failed after many years of use. It was a version that had laser height issues. Adjusting it fixed it for awhile, but the drive stopped spinning about two years after I did a flip top mod for playing imports. Not sure if the flip top prolonged its life or eventually killed it.
    Softmods didn't exist back then...it was either modchip or fliptop+swap magic. I guess there were slide cards, too, but those were super risky. I got a slim to replace it and did a simple tape and tissue mod to allow me to open the lid for swap magic and that's still working, but I'd love to just load all my games to a hard drive and be done with it. I've read that there is a network based ISO loader now, but I haven't had the chance to look into it yet.

    Man, you took it apart the hardest way. Should of watched a video on how to. I've taken apart my PS4 quite a few times to fix Sony's flaws; Thermal paste and adding more force for the heatsink to cpu/gpu. My opinion the PS2 was more of a pain trying to take it apart after 15 years or so. I had just dug mine out recently to mess around with it. The drive was having issues, so I cleaned the laser, put a piece of cardboard putting pressure on the helix follower (white tab thing to the right of laser at 17:00 ), clean and lube the guide rails and helix that the laser carriage.
    When the disc skip, jitter, etc it's that stupid follower.

      You are quite right about PSXLauncher, but actually it is also possible to swap on lower PS2-Versions!
      You only need a program, which patches/removes the 'Logo-Check' before executing rom0:/PS1DRV (possibly it coud work as well with a dump of that file from a newer PS2-Version, but I am not sure about it)!

    Did you replace the battery on the motherboard that is a rechargeable time keeper like on the dreamcast?

    I don't get it for me when i got to load a game it just sits at the black screen for a few hours when i finally give up and shut the console down. Dokapon Kingdom gets as far as showing a animated Loading fairy sprite in the bottom right that just dances until i shut the console off same deal
