The Satpura-Melghat Corridor is a 9,000 sq km area in the Satpuda Hill Range that connects the Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh to the Melghat Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. The corridor is home to a variety of large mammals, including tigers, leopards, dholes, sloth bears, gaur, nilgai, sambar, muntjac, four-horned antelope, and wild boar.
Here are some facts about the Satpura-Melghat Corridor:
The corridor is mainly made up of dry deciduous teak-bearing forests.
The terrain is hilly and rugged.
The corridor is mostly forested with low human density and low-intensity agriculture.
A road expansion project, NH46 (Betul-Hoshangabad), threatens the corridor.
Conservation biologists and forest managers should be guided by the precautionary principle and disallow any land use patterns that threaten the sanctity of corridors.
