Summary: Whale poop plays an important role in the marine ecosystem. It contains nutrients that support the growth of phytoplankton, which are crucial for the ocean's food chain and play a significant role in carbon absorption, helping to regulate the Earth's climate. Absolutely the best video I have seen in a while.❤️
One way to help whale populations is to not consume seafood since a lot of bycatch kill other non-target species likek dolphins, sea turtles shark and some whales :)
To clarify, whale feces feed phytoplankton, but a bile substance called ambergris, also expelled as such, is commercially valuable because of how it stabilizes perfume
@ClovetheClover True, but no one hunts whales just for ambergris. It's very rare, and can only be found after it's expelled, so preserving whales is good for both purposes.
@ThrillSeeker3524 I mentioned my first thoughts when I read the title in my notification. But I watched the video lol you don't need to tell me about the video itself.
This sounds like it's even more important to speak out against commercial whaling. It's illegal in most countries, but there are three known ones that actively hunt whales for profit: Iceland, Norway, and Japan
Japan’s whaling tradition dates back to the 17th century, where hunting was conducted to obtain valuable protein as food. Today, strict quotas are in place, confirming that whaling is a sustainable industry. In contrast, Western countries, particularly the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States, engaged in whaling not for meat, but for whale products such as oil. The impact of the overhunting that occurred during that time still lingers today. It is quite arrogant to criticize whaling now, after Western nations were the ones who depleted whale populations for profit. When whales were no longer needed, you turned against whaling. Wasn’t it you who hunted whales for profit in the first place?
I used to watch these videos daily back when my kiddo was 2 years old. Now that she's 4 we've gone back to watching them and I think she appreciates them more. I wonder if there is any content creator site for kids like TED-Ed. Good animation, no mascot, good narrators without "talk to kids voices", not talking down to kids either... but without heavy videos about masacres and complex logic/mathematical riddles.
"Real strength never impairs beauty or harmony, but it often bestows it; and in everything imposingly beautiful, strength has much to do with the magic." -Herman Melville

Amazing video. Amazing funny animation. Just quality of video can be better, in 1080p i thought its 240p :p. I didnt know if whales extinct, it will affect global warming...
Another reason why we need to move towards eating more plant-based diets like kelp, seaweed or spirulina. And help the oceans to recover from decades of whaling, over-fishing and pollution.
There are many unknown creatures in the ocean that serve as the main food source for life. I believe we need more research on ocean pollution, cleaning up ocean waste, and protecting our ecosystem.
And Japan Netherlands still do whaling. For Japan, the main culprit is, that kyodo senpaku company. I consider Japan as a very good country but, this act of whaling at a huge scale brings down Japan value in my eyes
thanks for this informative clip about ecosystems in the oceans! I just want to point out one thing: there is no such thing as sustainable fishing, at least not in any industrial scale. local fisher people (i.e. from indigenous peoples) are absolutely not the problem, but fishing at an industrial level never is nor can be sustainable. we are currently actively destroying our oceans with that. (if anyone would like more info on that, sea shepherd is a good source)
Whale be like: eat what's ejected out of my body, little krills, for soon I will eat you too and you'll blend with the food for your cousins, that will become my food too.
Whoever made the animation NEEDS to be known and have their pay raised
RIGHT?!
THEYRE SO CUTEEE
Who made this animation?

That last shot before credits is suprisingly gruesome.
Fr poor whale

I know what my nightmare is gonna be tonight now
right? eels and crabs munching on the still living whale
that's nature for you.
This art style scratches my head the right way and makes me happy
Our survival depends on every single type of life, as we are all bound together by the mysteries of nature.
Yep, and every type of life consumes some other type of life.
Even wasps and mosquitoes are a vital part of the ecosystem.
@@Rando_Shyte , no waaaaay! 😄 Don't say even microbes and bacteria are vital too.
Yeah, if specifically screwworms didn't exist, we'd all die.
OUR survival depends mostly on one type of life ... human life
All I can remember is Shark Tale when Skyes the pufferfish told Oscar, “There’s whale poop, and then there’s you” 😭😭
To clarify, whale feces feed phytoplankton, but a bile substance called ambergris, also expelled as such, is commercially valuable because of how it stabilizes perfume
Saving the world is more important than smelling good

I honestly thought this video was going to be about ambergris 😂 that stuff is ridiculously expensive
Think about the WHALES people. Think about the WHALES. Let’s SIMPLIFY everything as much as possible to talk about MEMORABLE and CUTE animals.
I thought that was what this video would be about!
the character avoiding the poop like in the matrix, in 4:25 left me in tears😂
I'm crying too 😢😢

When I saw the title of the video in my notifications, my brain immediately said "is this about ambergris?"
I thought it was going to be about the platinum dumped by the Spanish Empire!

Me too!
Was going to comment the same, but thought I'd read if anyone got there first. You did.
I thought it would be about those mineral "balls" full of rare elements that people want to scoop from the ocean floor
0:53 that "plop" got me 💀
There's a material in it called Ambergris which is used in luxury fragrances. Small bottle of that material costs 200k dollars.
Interesting, what does it smell like??
@@butter-biscuit2248 nothing else really compares to it and it smells amazing actually 😅

If you are just looking at total value, water is probably the most valuable thing in the ocean.
Ambergris comes from whale poop and it's one of the most expensive substances on the planet. I'm surprised this video did not bring it up.
