10:30 I would argue that Storm Seeker was green for the time. Colors punishing their opposition was a key part of old color pie design and this punished blue for drawing a lot of cards and holding cards in their hand. Therefore, for the time, it very much fit into green.
I love these "set reviews" for the first expansion sets. I also hope you don't skip any sets, rather, for example do them a bit faster instead of skipping, because every set is still important and has it's positive sides, even FE and Homelands (I really like both these sets, and my first packs were FE, Homelands and Ice Age). PS, I missed Land Tax and Sylvan Library from the Legends review, as those are great cards even today! :)
I didn’t play magic until around 97-98 and I remember getting chronicles gold cards and being blown away! I had a Johan that was one of my favorite cards. There truly was something magical about Legends
Thanks for taking me back to the old days of playing magic at the mall in the 90s, knowing nothing of combos and just enjoying the art and flavor more than anything. I miss it too, but you all succeeded in helping me relive that magic.
Thank you! I have a league with my old boys where we buy unopened old school boosters and draft them. We only play with sets from before 1998. We have been doing this for 4 years now - and it is absolutely amazing. Love see other players do something similar. Old School Love - keep up the amazing work guys!
I played through these old sets, stopped after Mirage, and just started playing Magic again three months ago on Arena. I have been watching LR to refresh my limited skills (which has helped immensely-thanks!) but these “old set” reviews have really been wonderful to watch! Thanks and can’t wait for more!
Legends really was something incredible - it's the early set which IMO showed the promise of the premise of magic. I was lucky enough to be at the local mall, and a comic shop had a box and I bought 6 of them. Went back later in the day to buy more, but the country was essentially sold out at that point.
Fallen Empires draft is actually an interesting experience. Boxes are still available, you should try it and then do a full set review for limited please :)
I bought sword of the ages back in the mid 90s because it was sooooo cool to me man! I’m getting ready to sell it for a lot more than what I payed for it but it’s hard letting go. Great vid guys!
Should just call it "Type 1" set reviews. Use an old school name for old school sets lol. Most newer players don't know Type 1, 1.5, and 2 is what Wizards used to call Vintage, Legacy, and Standard before those terms became official
This is exactly what I needed at the end of this week. Thank you guys so much for your work on this and thank you for providing some much-needed stress relief and a whole lot of fun! ❤️
This episode was awesome! Even more so then normal. I just wanna mention, you guys said that legends had two mentions to real life characters/events, but theres three, one you even mention in the beginning in a diferent setence, which is Rasputin.
It is surprising that Invoke was printed, but maybe the topic wasn’t as spicy hot 30 years ago. Magic depicts egregious acts (such as murder), but if there are no related cultural controversies no one minds.
I mean I noticed it being fishy back in the day but I just thought it was coincidence. Regardless banning it was stupid in my opinion. To you point, you can cast a demon who probably eats babies in the same game.
Ok maybe the “gypsy” card as well now that I think about it. Again who cares cause no one used that anyway. But crusade is such a significant card and has great flavor. Love the old art too. Same with Jihad. I’m middle eastern and “stone throwing devil” has never been used as a slur! Maybe something like stone throwers might be used against Palestinians? Regardless the name of that card is derived from 1001 nights.
@@vaevictis_ Personally, I’d be comfortable going way farther than most of the Mtg community. I don’t really care if cards represent culturally controversial topics. Like Marshall said, invoke is basically racism the card. Okay, and? We have murder the card. Pretend you’re an evil wizard casting evil spells. It’s a game ya know, what’s it matter? But this is not the world we live in. 🤷♀️
@@dustinseth1 dude, I agree with you 💯. It’s kind of like being a nazi in a WW2 video game or a confederate soldier in a civil war reenactment, it’s all for fun. Is there anything more evil than devils or demons from religion/folklore??
These old school reviews are so fun
I miss the old, varying art styles. The good and the bad of it, but each card felt unique.

Been looking forward to another one of these for a while! Grew up on these cards, super fun

I'm one of those boys and this is our channel :) we also mess with the modern stuff but don't tell anybody!

I’ve been getting into running during lockdown and have just finished listening to the other two! Thanks guys
Floral Spuzzem is such a fantastic new card to learn about 😂
No mention of Uncle Istvan 😔

1:09:49 i like how blazing effigy has the phrases "does damage" and "deals damage" on the same card
I started playing during Lorwyn block and was very confused by "plainswalk"
Plainswalk is hands down the rarest of the Landwalk abilities. I think Wizards knew that term would be confusing to players.
I'd like to nominate 'Argivian Archaeologists' for the series name
more old school reviews with ben please
Thank you guys for the content. Really enjoyed this episode!

I don't listen to LR regularly anymore but these episodes that review the early sets are great
I bought sword of the ages back in the mid 90s because it was sooooo cool to me man! I’m getting ready to sell it for a lot more than what I payed for it but it’s hard letting go. Great vid guys!
God, I love these deep dive videos. I can't wait until the next one.
Urza block next please
I think the best name for this format is "vintage set review"
At some point they're gonna reach 8th Edition and the sets are gonna be modern legal.

Oh I loved dance of many from the Dark. I was so happy when I opened the booster with it
Love this style video, just found your channel. Subbed and hoping you have more like it.
You missed another real world reference ;) Pavel Maliki is William Tell. Switzerland has the Pavel Maliki art on its 5 CHF coin
This is exactly what I needed at the end of this week. Thank you guys so much for your work on this and thank you for providing some much-needed stress relief and a whole lot of fun! ❤️
I've kinda always seen The Dark as a spiritual predecessor to Innistrad. The dark, spooky, everything is a little less safe kind of feel.
Can someone explain the Petra Sphinx banned in France issue?
Too many people got lucky or cheated is what it sounded like
The real head scratcher is looking at this card's art, how does this creature not have flying?
I used to play apprentice wizard. That card help make a bigger fireball
They are doing such a great job at these!,
nice is that gloomhaven I spot under Ben's screen:D

Another great episode.
Gotta say I love these
I've read Ben Stark
I predict that you'll have reviewed every set by 2050. And that will be a great accomplishment.
Best episodes
the racist artist is actually really good as an artist though, which is humorous
LSV sus
def sus
cringe
Chains being convoluted is the joke ye and modern MTG art is a sad joke mostly.
