Both my parents died in 2002 when I was 17. I joined the military and did several tours in Fallujah, iraq with the Marine Corps infantry. I just found out yesterday that my wife is pregnant. I'm now 36yrs old and would give anything to be able to give my dad the news. I've listened to this song 20 times tonight and I can't stop crying. I haven't cried in almost 20yrs. It breaks me down when the boy in this song is going off to war and he's scared. So was I. And now the part when he says "I cant do this on my own" is how I feel right now.

This song hits me hard. My dad was my hero when I was a little boy. He was the biggest strongest person I knew. He would always scare away the monsters. I deployed to Afghanistan on a combat tour in 2010. We cried our eyes out on the phone the day I shipped out. He told me he’d always be there no matter what. My dad passed away in 2016. Hardest days of my life was saying goodbye to him. I took care of him by myself for 6 months and it broke me badly to lose him. This song sums up my entire life with my father. Damn man..I have a similar story. I just went in a bit of the opposite direction..found myself in prison. The only person that wrote me and cared while I was there was my dad. I’ve got a hundred letters from the 2 ish years I was there. When I got out he got sick again, I moved Amarillo from Houston to take care of him. Ultimately over the next year I nursed him to a horrible death. I’m grateful I was able to be there for him. He wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to do what I had to..either way, I’ll never stop seeing that biggest strongest most bad ass man that I knew in my head exactly as that. I’ll miss him forever and I feel your pain brother.

I lost my Dad 2 years ago and I really wanted to play this song at his funeral but for the longest time put off learning it as I did not want the reason for learning it to happen (dads funeral), he suffered from Parkinson's and Lewis body dementia so it was a slow and painful progression to witness. In the last week before he passed I found the strength to learn the song and a week later I played the song for him at his funeral. Then I was asked by one of my best mates and had the privilege of playing it at his father's funeral 2 weeks later. Sometimes fear, self doubt and pain stop us from doing the really hard things in life however those are usually the most important things. I am glad I found the strength as often times the pain of regret is much more difficult to handle than the pain of action. Remember you are stronger and more capable than you ever give yourself credit for. Much love ❤

I lost my dad over a decade ago and this reminded me.of how much I miss him. He was a great father. Even through my rebellious teen years when I said regretful nasty things to him, he neber gave up on me and was always by my side wether i knew it or not. I kmw for a fact he is still watching over me and his grandkids.

This song has me fucked up. My dad was my hero growing up. He was my best friend, my rock, the only person I could trust. As I got older, I realized my father wasn’t who I thought he was. After I joined the Corps, we had a falling out. He wasn’t there when I deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. He didn’t call, write, check up on me. Nothing. I’m now listening to this song trying to put my 2 year old to sleep, crying my eyes out. I’ll promise to never make him feel the way my old man did when I needed him the most.
