  • We've come to the end of viewer request week and I figured why not finish it off by book ending with the most requested band by far, Band-Maid. The more and more I listen to them, the more and more I want to hear more.
Thanks for getting In The Pit! Have a song you think I would like? Leave a comment below and if I haven't heard it, I'll put it on the list.

They should put the lead singer Saiki’s name on the building. She owned the place.

I am enjoying your commentary. I think the song “from now on” would give you the best idea of how capable they are as musicians. There are some great shots of Akane, their drummer, putting a beat down on her drum set. And if you want an even more modern song, check out “influencer”.

"Dye for you" is actually "DYE", not "DIE"
There is a saying in Japan "あなた色に染まる" (dye for you) means "I become a person of your taste".

You said it! You said the magic words! “Dilly dally!”
The die is cast. There is no turning back.
“Moratorium,” live from Zepp Tokyo 2018
Everyone will meet at your place 🤘🏽
You have already discovered how they are musical shapeshifters. Definitely not the “one trick pony” as you said. More refreshing surprises to come 👍🏽

Great reaction Master Steve. Diverse and deep are the Maid catalog. Some change ups from songs you already heard. Try the following:
    Daydreaming OMV
    From Now On OMV (Instrumental)
    Influencer OMV
Endless Story OLV (10th Anniversary Yokohama Arena)
Bestie OMV (co-written with Mike Einziger from Incubus, lyrics by Miku)
    Freedom OLV
    Do a two for:
Band-Maid "Secret Maiko Lips" OMV and their rival cover band Band-Maiko "Secret Maiko Lips" OMV. Funny how Band-Maid and Band-Maiko are never in the same room together. 🤔
Sayonakidori MV (Band-Maid, Releases tab, Album "Unseen World", Track 7) and Sayonakidori Acoustic OLV
Catharsis MV (Band-Maid, Release tab, Album "Conqueror", Track 13) and Catharsis Acoustic OLV

Many rock bands hide everything but the guitar and vocals,
BAND-MAID brings the bass and drums to the forefront, allowing everyone to shine.
    This is very characteristic.
    My recommendation is:
Onset live, From Now On, Without Holding Back.
The bass playing on these three songs each has its own characteristics, and the atmosphere of the songs is as different as if they were in different genres.
From Now On features bass that plays a beautiful melody line and intense drumming.
Without Holding Back has a bass that pop and slap play.
And Influencer and NoGod also have a very strong base.
    Highly recommended. have fun!

For something different try their new MV Bestie, or older ones like Daydreaming MV, or the acoustics, Sayonakidori and Catharsis. SW Mich. here.

Total coincidence. I haven't had the time to listen to any Band-Maid outside of the channel yet sadly. I'm woefully behind on new releases this year so I've been playing catch up.

I can't hear it without the old music hall song "Don't Dilly Dally on the Way" starting to play in the back of my mind. Does anyone know where Miku got the inspiration to include the phrase in the lyrics?

This is from the same show as Hate, at Yokohama Arena, late last year.
They write dense, interesting music that's not the most accessible, which, I think, makes them struggle a bit in terms of expanding their reach, which is probably why you haven't run into them before. Stuff that tends to break out of Japan tends to be popular anime stuff, and their tracks that have been attached to anime have been more obscure ones. They keep their choruses pretty simple and catchy, so they still do well enough commercially, but it's not the kind of repetitive ear worm stuff typical of pop or whatever that everyone can latch on to. The people who really love them tend to be other musicians, or older music lovers who have gotten kind of jaded with simpler stuff.

Hey Steve, there's no frills when they tour outside of Japan. Even the lighting can be pretty spotty at these small venues. Check out the MV for FROM NOW ON. I'd like to hear your comments on that one. Of course there's about 60+ others after that. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Peace. 244

Real Existence Live has Smoke and Lasers used to great effect. Older song but a banger.
You have really good analysis and reactions. If you like yoyr Dilly Dally phrases then check out Moratorium. It isn't on their official channel but there are a couple of pro shot live versions floating around out there.
From Now On is a fantastic instrumental that sounds different from what you have heard so far. It has a MV.

interesting that you thought this was a more modern song. This came out in early 2017, and I tend to think of it as more of a normal rock style. As for the use of "DYE", best explanation is that phrase, "dye for you", is a Japanese saying. Meaning a willingness to change for you. Not the obvious mistranslated spelling idea. Further support for that idea is the lyricist, rhythm guitarist Miku, loves to use puns and double meanings, and loves to dye her hair bright colors.

I don't know of any other band where the fans' top song lists differ as much as Band Maid. This is just a (quite) random selection of songs:
Special live: Freedom (Live), Play (Live), ...
Hard rock: Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV), Dice (MV), Warning (MV)...
    Fast: Different
Varied songs: Corallium (Live at Shibuya), Influencer (MV), ...
Very chatchy chorus: Choose me (MV), Alone (MV), ...
Ballads: About Us (MV), Daydreaming (MV), ...
Instrumentals: From now on (MV), Onset (Live), ...
Miku songs: Sayonakidory (also acoustic), Beauty and the Beast (sadly no good video), ...
If you want to start at the beginning of their career (2013-2017): Thrill (MV, their first video), Real Existence (second video), Alone (MV, first own composition), Freedom(best LIVE performance), Choose Me, Play (LIVE!), ...
    Have fun... Po

Ooh.... a trigger phrase.... "No reason to dilly dally"......
I was going to recommend you listen to Onset next, but I recognize that you have inherently and unwittingly selected the next song to react to through that trigger phrase - "Moratorium".
    Looking forward to it!

Thanks Steve. I really enjoy your reaction style and insight. I love Band-Maid for many reasons including their rich compositions and how they fully utilize the talents of each of the members. Another band that does this exceptionally well is the Japanese power trio named Sokoninaru. They are a math-ish group that combines complex math-rock elements with smooth J-pop vocals. Although their math-rock side does not appeal to everyone I think it is something you will enjoy. I would like to suggest their song Brilliant City (MV) which is one of their more accessible tracks and if it is to your taste then the song Saetei そこに鳴る / 最低 which showcases their talents. They are also as cool AF if that means anything. I hope you give them a listen and thanks again!
