  • In this video, I go into detail about how accurate WHOOP's sleep tracking algorithm is, and how you can use the data it provides to improve your sleep! One thing I completely forgot to discuss WHOOP's patents that outline their innovative probability algorithm. This algorithm determines the state of of the user using WHOOP's hardware, by measuring heart rate, skin conductivity, and accelerometer data.

I wanna do an ultra so this band is hopefully gonna help. Do half marathoners regularly but only 1 marathon last year. Recovery is so important so I don't hurt the body. Good content, ty!

    I've been using a Whoop strap since the second generation was first made available which was around September 2017 then upgraded to the 3rd generation when it first became available.
    I really do find it useful and have been thoroughly impressed with everything they've done over the years to improve what they track and the data they provide.

    Love the videos! Your past video on the whoop strap convinced me to try it out. I got the strap about 2 days ago and wanted to see what would happen if I hit 90%+ recovery, so I slept for about 8 hours. I love my whoop strap, just wish a few things.
    1. Apple health kit integration, which integrates with MyFitnessPal. Would love to see how certain foods affect performance.
    2. Alarm clock. Wish the whoop app could have an alarm clock like a push notification feature like sleep cycle, but with whoops accuracy could work more effectively to gently wake you up.
    3. See the data of the surveys you answer each morning. Let me see how my sleep is when I report CBD use for example.
    Great video bro! Keep it up!

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  3 роки тому

      Hey, Ryan - Thanks for watching! My thoughts on your points:
      1. Idk if the MyFitnessPal logging versus performance helps. I actually used to do this when I used my Apple Watch. If you want to see effects on your body, you'd have to use something like Levels or other Continuous Glucose Monitoring systems - something I plan on doing in the future. It's going to be to difficult to understand looking it any other way;
      2. YES! My favorite feature of the old Jawbone was that it would wake you up at the end of a sleep cycle, or at least try to anyway. It was just a soft vibration on the wrist, but it was enough to wake you up.
      3. Not sure what you mean here. The monthly assessment breaks down everything in incredible detail. Even with CBD, I have been varying my doses, and the monthly assessment shows how I've been taking 16.5, 30, or 50+ mgs.

    Great review and quality facts and information. You said there is nothing that a person can take to improve sleep. How do you feel about ZMA's?

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  3 роки тому

      Hey, appreciate it! So let me preface this by saying I'm no sleep expert, and have a very elementary understanding of it. BUT - it's more about promoting NATURAL sleep rather than just sleep. For example, Ambien will put you to sleep, but you may experience none of the necessary sleep cycles you need for your body to fully recover. I do take a number of supplements like zinc, magnesium, and my absolute favorite that I've been seeing results with improved sleep length is CBD (I'll break this down in a future video, but already did one on my favorite CBD source). But none of which apparently has been confirmed through clinical trials to improve my deep sleep or REM. Just merely keeping me asleep for a longer period along with my natural sleep cycle, is what I'm benefitting from. With all that being said, everyone has different experiences and just because there aren't proven clinical studies. However, it's though to discuss anecdotal things such as this.

      I break down in the video the study validating WHOOP’s sleep tracking accuracy, which is incredible. With that being said, these fitness trackers have so many variables personal to the user to overcome to attempt an accurate reading. I did a video on the accuracy of the Apple Watch discussing these issues (e.g. skin tone, personal characteristics)

    Whoops sleep detection accuracy varies wildly between people. I've had a 3 and 4, and they both give consistently low sleep times. Like if I want to get 8 hours of reported sleep, I have to stay in bed for about 13 hours (a recent surgery gave me the opportunity to sleep for this long lol). I've heard quite a few others say the same. I've also had a couple of professional tests done and my sleep is decent enough.
    Also for some reason my HRV is freakishly low. I'm talking 12 to 21 max. I'm just over 30 and certainly not the fittest but I'm not obese or anything. I'm making my own correlation that it could be due to Anxiety which was in turn brought on by epilepsy. My anxiety isn't that bad, like I've never come close to having panic attacks in public or anything. I didn't even realise I had it until a physio put me onto it.

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  Рік тому

      Curious is the sleep tracking is at least consistent or if it's just a huge variance for you. I haven't seen this issue with others, and I test and use other sleep devices with all the data being within acceptable ranges from one another.
      As far as the HRV, the number is genetically unique from one person to the next. Healthy trends may show it increasing, but it's not a number that I've seen you should worry about in terms of what it actually is.

    What is your opinion on naps?

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  3 роки тому

      TL:DR - More sleep is better than less sleep.
      I won't give you my opinion, but what research has indicated - much more useful. Humans are naturally on a bi-phasic sleep pattern. Meaning that it is natural to sleep, go about your day, then want to nap - as long as you're getting the 8 hour total you need in a day. This was natural in pre-industrial times, and even still in some countries (e.g. siesta). However, if you're someone like me who has issues with getting 8 hours in a day, then it's important to skip the nap to allow the adenosine (sleep pressure) to continue building. Things like naps, decreases this pressure, causing wakefulness.
      I think one way or the other, you train your body to get used to this sleep pattern.

  • @chevystewart2333

    Just started using whoop 3 days ago. Confused about the sleep tracking. I get a sleep performance of 100% because I slept the recommended amount of time. I know the quality of my sleep is shitty due to the amount of times awake, disturbances and such. Do they only measure by how long you stayed in bed?

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  3 роки тому

    I love my whoop but I hate the subscription. If they just sold it for one lump sum I would not have such a love hate relationship. I end up canceling my subscription after doing the minimum 6 months for a bit as by then you have a pretty good idea of where your body is dealing with your average sleep, strain, recovery etc. I have noticed just how much whoop makes my push myself vs not using it as I will always strive for a certain strain or calorie goal that I might not try to accomplish without it. Is this worth 30 bucks a month? I guess it depends on you because I am about to come up on my next 6 month end cycle and wondering if I should cancel again. I can't imagine using this thing for 3 years and end up paying over a grand for it I guess. So back to apple watch soon. Sorry whoop, but nobody is paying you thousands of dollars for a device. My gym membership is even cheaper.

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  3 роки тому

      Agreed. That's just the toughest part, and was the biggest deterrent for me for over a year before I finally got one. I hate monthly payments, and pay for everything I can upfront. However, it's my sneaking suspicion that the other fitness trackers, Apple and Garmin included, are going to start having monthly models for their devices, on top of an upfront cost. The reason being is that I work in tech and we're seeing a massive move to cloud computing that's been accelerated years ahead due to COVID. Amazon made this move already with their Halo band. You're basically paying for the device + renting power/computing space on their services through your membership.
