  • How to adjust a bicycle drum (internal) brake, featuring a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub. Watch BikemanforU videos / bikemanforu for fun tutorials on DIY bike maintenance. Free shipping on bike parts and accessories www.bikemanforu.com In this DIY video, Tweaking an internal (drum) brake requires listening. It begins, however, with the two cable ends - in this situation - the lever accepts a road style end and the wheel accepts an ATB cable end. This video tutorial shows how to stall each end properly and how to use your ear while adjusting the barrel on the lever and the drum nut at the wheel. Actuate the brake by squeezing the lever. The Sturmey Archer front drum brake is original equipment on Pashley Cycle's new Guv'nor retro classic racing bike. Thx! I live in Denmark where Sturmey Archer bicycle components aren't so common.
    I am trying to repair my girlfriends second hand bike and I have to order cable and brake lever from UK.
    So, this video helped me a lot to understand how it works.
    Popular Shimano Rollerbrakes are completely different.

    Regarding drum brake adjustment, if they are anything like the old motorcycle drum brakes, the shoes need to be adjusted for full contact with the drum. This is very fast and easy: loosen the brake shoe anchor nut, pull and hold the hand lever firmly, then tighten the anchor nut. This allows the shoes to center themselves and make full contact.

    Really cool video thanks. I own a Pashley Sovereign Roadster bike with Sturmey Archer five speed hub gears. Would you consider doing a video about adjusting the Five or three speed internal hub gears please?

    seems like a really nice brake system if you're not much into brake maintenance all the time.

    Speaking of the UK... This year's Tour de France somehow starts in Yorkshire, which seems to be in England. Does the Tour de England start in France? First day is 7/5/14, Saturday and it drones on for three weeks!!!

    Speaking of France... Does BikeMan do a special video or celebration for the really, really big race? Mimes? Jerry Lewis? French Fries cuisine? Cut off an ear? That would be "bon!", not so much the ear part though.

    Hey bikeman, how good are modern sturmey-archer drums? Has their stopping power improved or is fading still an issue? Because I have a crazy idea. It turns out SA makes a drum brake freehub that can accept a modern 8/9/10 speed shimano/SRAM cassette. Which got me thinking, what if someone built a CX bike with SA drums instead of disks? I mean from what I can tell the drum looks more rugged than the disks and a lot easier to adjust and maintain. Not to mention you can use a cheaper frame the never had proper disk mounts. However nobody talks about it. What do you think? Am I crazy or missing something?

      7 years later… :)
      I can testify that SA drums are very good. You have to pull harder to use them, and that’s a surprise for someone first time, but once you understand, no problem.
      You can use a regular frame. Unfortunately you have to get creative with like automotive hose band clamps to secure the brake reaction arms to the frame.
      In the rear I have an SA cassette hub with drum brake. I have spacers and a single speed cog. But no reason you couldn’t have a cassette and derailleur.
      I’ve never experienced brake fade. I spent a long time before getting them worrying about it, because probably like you I had read in the internet about fade or the heat buildup affecting bearing grease. Never experienced that in tens of thousands of kilometers. I suspect the rumors started from the very first mountain bikers that in the 70’s ran down big mountains in California with only a drum coaster brake in the rear.
      So what are the benefits…. First is they are sealed and invulnerable to rain and snow…. Just what’s needed for a commuter in an area that has rain and snow…. Second they never need any kind of servicing or adjustment…. You never need to replace brake pads…. Thirdly comparing the whole price of the braking system to discs, they are not expensive…

    If the cabe is to long and I need to make it shorter, is the end anchor useless then?

    • @ladamyre1
      @ladamyre1 4 роки тому

      Yes. If you will be cutting the cable housing to length, then the anchor at the wheel will have to be cut off and a new anchor installed. Not a big deal if you have the tool.
