I also think it was intentional to be covert. He laces the floor with pills on purpose, then floods his system with it. Afterwards on the news they say he died of an overdose and I’m assuming they suspect he had something to do with killing his own men. This leaving a natural conclusion for those in the village to make where Denzel didn’t want to be known as the killer when he’s been the peaceful man all along.

He was surrounded by the people he didn't care about, at his weakest and most desperate, literally dying, with nobody to mourn or even care about him. He was just another corpse in the street, like all the others-killed by the drugs that he sold to his people. Brought down from the highest position to become literally nothing but garbage. McCall wanted to make sure he died there in front of the people.

Meanwhile, when it was McCall's turn, he grabbed the remote pressed the button, and just walked out. This is probably the monstrous form of him because he never played with his victims. One of the things I love about this scene is that he walks in there with not a fear in him because he wants them to fear him and that’s what I love about this movie just his walk and his presence alone put the fear of god in them. The way he watches him collapse after giving him his own drugs and follows him is instant classic it’s like he’s almost possess by watching this guy die crazy but so good

One of the scariest things about this character is how he does not shy away from death, but seems to actually relish every second of its approach. It’s chilling coming from a person who is normally doing his best to be fair and honest with people, to do the “right thing” by them and avoid conflict when possible. That sudden flip of a switch from “quiet, nice guy” to “I will inflict death and drink it like the finest wine” is horrifying.

From a number of the interviews and the like, apparently Denzel was willing to break his long-standing “I don’t do sequels” rule for this particular movie set. He (and the other folk involved) were passionate enough about this story-line that they all pretty much really wanted to continue it. Something, maybe, to take into consideration. And for this movie in particular, there is the familiar dynamic from Man on Fire between the two actors, that makes the ease of their interaction delightful.
