What shorts should I add to this list? What did you rock this summer?
Happy to see Craft making a mark here. Huge fans of their gear.
T8 sherpa shorts, a lot of trail runner in my area are rocking it, have a look at it
Path Projects Sykes AT 5" are what I ran in almost all summer; super light with three back pockets. Crest PX 5" with a more relaxed fit for some days; heavier weight with side pockets.
@thegingerrunner don't be scared of the 3" inch trail racing short! Rabbit, Altra and Craft all have great 3" options and we all know shorter inseam = faster times!!
I got the lululemon after wait king your video from last summer, definitely wasn’t thrilled with the price but could not be happier with the short, they are super comfortable and worthy every penny,
here for the b roll
followup: the b roll did not disappoint
Stay and replay as much as you like!
Such a great model Ethan!! I would LOVE if Kim would do a women’s shorts review. I don’t know why they don’t make shorts like these for women. We could also use all those stretchy pockets, etc. Great review Ethan.
Clearly Ethan squandered an opportunity for a modeling career in his past life.
Clearly out of shape. 😜 Runner?
7:40 😂😂
Still running in the same 2 pairs of Patagonia Pro strider 5" s I bough almost 3 years ago. Just finished a 100 miler in them. Worn wear baby!
Those are legendary shorts for sure!
Rabbit and Janji are my favorite shorts, as well. Incredibly fast drying, material is so soft and comfortable. Your modeling had me literally cackling! Great review!
Love my rabbit FKTs. Ethan, the slo-mo modeling poses had me slapping my knee. Nice list!
I know you've had them on your list in the past but - Path Projects makes the best shorts for me!
I've heard good things too, I'm really looking forward to trying some.
I own 2 pairs and they haven't disappointed me yet after 6 months of running. My only only issue with them is I find it hard to get a good lockdown when I'm carrying my phone in the back pocket
I tend to like longer shorts and when i found Path Projects, Crest PX 9inch, linerless. it is the only running short i own, i have 7 pairs, the only issue is limited color options.
Had to scan the video ahead just incase it was the jumpscare that he adds every year since we're kinda close to halloween, gets me every year
UnderArmour Speedpocket 5" have been amazing for me for the past two years. Zip pocket in the back for keys/valuables and a stash pocket in front waist band for phone. If you want a more fitted short than order your size but if you want a slightly looser option go up a size. They are super comfortable and have held up great for two years of use year round.
Evadict 5" from decathlon are amazing, only £15 but worth a lot more imo. Better than salomon agile 5" and cheaper too
I wish The North Face would bring back the Better Than Naked shorts. I just found out they didn't make them anymore when I was hoping to pick up a third pair at the beginning of the summer. I won a pair of On Lightweight Shorts that I'm waiting to arrive right now, so maybe they'll fill that void the discontinuation of the BTNs left.
agree on BTNs
Get weirdly excited about this every year.
Yes, definitely need to be able to carry a phone. You never know when you are out for your run around Halloween and come across something on the trail that you want to get a video of , like a small ghost child or an alien .
You never know :)
For the shorts with the loop , i just take scissors and cut the loop at the center , tie a knot at each end and have a regular pair to tie down.
Love it, great pro tip…I had the same issue with the continues loop technique. Again thanks 🙏
I own a pair of Path Projects Graves PX 7" and I'm very happy with them. Really good quality, lots of pockets and super comfy.
I LOVE this review! But I works LOVE to see a review of women’s shorts too! Please Kim, do a shorts review!
Aw @thegingerrunner you’re model skills are killing me. So 🤣. That leaf pose is hilarious
The leaf and leg kick cracked me up! 🤣
picked up 2 pairs of the lululemon surge on your recommendation and will never go back - superb kit
North Face Wander shorts worked great this summer. No phone pocket but I typically use a flip belt
My go to pairs are the Arcteryx Motus shorts (built in brief) and the Veilance Secant Comp shorts (briefless).
I'm looking for some storage but not too much. Seems like an odd request but I don't want the side pockets while I'm running but I'm all on board for a phone pocket. Simple is good. I'd still love to see more affordable options. Big props to the model in this video. I'd say take half of that guys salary and double it. 💥 Hell of a job. 👏
I had a few sub-$40 pairs in rotation, but they lacked something - whether quality, storage or comfort. I look forward to finding the elusive budget pair that just works!
Halving & doubling my salary now!
@@TheGingerRunner - Im ordering the Janji with the slight discount. Thanks for the recommendations. 👍
@@TheGingerRunner The shorts from decathlon are cheap and full of storage features. They are holding up fine for me even for 100 milers. The sizing is a bit off, so size up.
Personally I love the Janji Transit 6" shorts. They have 3 zipper pockets to keep everything secure. And the zippers go the correct direction (looking at you Path Projects).
Holy crap I was just about to write this very same comment! I just wish they made them in a black colorway again!
I just did my run today in the Solomon Sense 5" shorts and this is the first time I carried my phone in the front pouch pocket. Was not a super big fan, but they are amazing shorts if you're not carrying anything heavy.
I'm also picking up some of the Janji AFOs. The loop tie worries me a bit, the storage looks great.
Yeah the Salomon pouch is limited to lighter items, but SO light and comfy! AFO Vent, once that loop is tied right, it’s set for life.
Got a pair of extreme gymboi ASRV shorts and while they’re thicker than everything on this list and ill-suited for long runs they are awesome as the liner and phone holder are fantastic. Also, it turns out that if you look like a hypebeast mall ninja that keeps anyone from bothering you on the run.
The posing is on point this year!! Hahaha … check out the T8 Sherpa shorts … liner less shorts with great storage and a cool design
Agree with linerless being the comfiest although do you wear anything underneath?
@@hrrrrrrr2084 I sure do … just a normal spandex style under armour underwear … offers great thigh protection without riding up to high
@@TheDonkeyboy82 Yeah I can understand some want some support. Actually it seems rather common that some guys would wear nothing else underneath the shorts
I take my phone case off when out running. It's less bulky that way. This review is right on time
I enjoyed running in La Sportiva shorts this summer *a lot*; 1. „Auster” (lighter version of their „Tempo“ shorts), 2. „Triumph“ (super comfy half tights with relaxed (=not compressive) fit) 3. „Freccia“ (ultra minimal, super ligtweight, basically feels like running nude). They seem to last quite well, I'm sure I'll have at least one or two more seasons with them. Love their other gear too, great company.
Got a couple of pairs of the Lululemon shorts based on your previous list, can't say I was disappointed. Bit expensive but they've lasted for ages and come in loads of colours.
I've sooo many pairs of shorts but don't have any with the phone storage on a leg pocket, loving the poses 😂🏃
i have a few pairs of the salomon sense shorts from last year (front and back pouches).. best shorts ever!
I agree that shorts are super important! When I go to a sport or running store, I always check what’s available.
I dunno the model name, but I have a pair of Adidas Aeroready that I love, because the fabric in the back is perforated, helping with breathability. I usually run without undies, especially in summer, and its brief liner never caused me any issues.
The only drawback is the angled zip pocket at the back. Whether or not it’s because of the angle, I sometimes struggle with closing it.
At my local specialty store they stock a brand called T8 from Hong Kong that are designed by and for ultra runners. They aren’t cheap, so I have yet to buy them, but it’s always tempting.
+1 on the Adidas Aeroready.
Best part of the vid was the fabuloso modeling. I would offer the Black Diamond Sprint 5" for summer and the District Vision Spino 5" for Spring/Fall. More dinero than most on the list, but amazing.
your modeling skills are hilarious :-D
thanks for the review!
My go-shorts are the Janji AFO (make split shorts for women, YOU COWARDS), Nike Aeroswift (Thank u Sally McRae) the rabbit Mountain Climbers, Catch Me if You Can, and Hoppers.
Also, 10/10 modeling, Ethan 🔥🔥🔥
hahah we are making split shorts for women next season!
@@DSpandorfer BLESS YOU 🙏🙌
Fantastic review Ethan. I love my New Balance Impact 5" running shorts. I found they work great all year round and they won't break the bank.
T8 sherpa running shorts are the best I've tried, had a pair for 18 months or so and worn them in a dozen races, untold training runs, and tarawera ultra and they still look like new.
Agree with linerless being the comfiest although do you wear anything underneath?
@@hrrrrrrr2084 long briefs or I get chafing.
@@morganaverynz too bad. So you've tried just the shorts on their own without the boxers? Chafing where, if you don't mind, on the thighs?
@@hrrrrrrr2084 yes on the thighs. I've never worn them on their own, never wear any shorts without long briefs, whether they have a liner or not.
@@morganaverynz Perhaps it's the reason you suffer from chafing. Then some creams can also help
Meanwhile i run on Marshall's 8$ shorts :(
sometimes you are pleasantly surprised at Marshall’s .socks and tops.., usually, but I have got some shorts…
once
I really like the Lululemon shorts, but I never use the phone holder as I still find it rubs after a while on a long run. Not cheap, but they're ace.
I recently stumbled upon the Nike trail flex stride 5”, pleasantly surprised with them. The liner was comfortable but in the heat I cut the liner out and went full lieutenant dangle jangle in them - became my favorite hot weather shorts.
lol yeah you don't mind having no support at all?
@@hrrrrrrr2084 I wouldn’t run a marathon like that but works for shorter runs when it’s too hot to care what’s peeking out. Mainly using them now as an outer shell over short tights
@@seanwise7464 Nice haha! what's the length of shorter runs for you? and you don't mind that everything flops around and peaks out?
@@hrrrrrrr2084 5-8 miles, but things don’t really “flop out” - despite what friends may say, I do have a small bit of decency. Lol
@@seanwise7464 I hope so lmao - I didn't mean that your bits stick out of the legs of the shorts haha. Actually, it's more about that can people see a bulge or not, and having the bits moving around since there's not support at all. Seems you don't mind it?
7:55 - I can't even. Amazing.
The shorts were just that comfortable. I couldn’t bother with the leaf!
Kim must be so proud.
The B-roll footage has me dying. Fantastic.
I’ve got a couple pair of Adidas Parley Agravic that I love. Sadly, Adidas seems to no longer make the model I like the most that has a stash pocket below the belly button for a phone. I never thought that would work well, but it’s super comfortable and convenient. The current models still have mesh stash pockets on both hips, a small zipper pocket on the back (too small for most phones though), and elastic straps for stashing poles. The liner is incredibly comfortable. Easily the most comfortable, breathable, and supportive shorts I’ve ever tried. I do really like those Nikes. They are one of the few shorts that consistently get complements re: their looks when I wear them.
Shout out to Territory Run Co.’s All Day Run Shorts. Recently took them on a 50K run and they were super comfy. Something about the materials that I really enjoy. Not too tight or loose and plenty of give for range of motion.
I agree totally. I was hoping these would have made the list. I love them
I'd love to see a shirt and sock showdown too... great vid for people new to the trails and looking to gear up.
This summer I used the NIKE Summer Dri-Fit Trail Flex Stride 5" for my training and my mountain 100 (Grindstone 100). I liked the Zipper pockets, the internal key pocket is small but is great for salt tabs, I tried to use the shirt loop once.. and never again, I did cut the brief liner out of them. They never rubbed me the wrong way over nearly 30 hours reaching the humid mid to upper 80s of Virginia. I would like to try the Janji or Rabbit shorts sometime.
7:40 that's the funniest dance i've seen this year
Glad to see the sherpas make the list! They're fantastic.
I’m with you on the single chord/loop thing. It would be cool if they added a toggle so we could easily and quickly cinch it down and easily adjust on the fly.
Just started running and instantly subbed to the channel after seeing the slow mo’s and quality content!
the modeling shots this year have really taken a step up. lookin so good lol
Bro, that tree stretching scene..had me rolling.
Love all the glamor shots! Great video! Lately, I've been liking the Reebok Running Essentials 2-in-1 Shorts. The only downside is that they do lack storage. There is a pocket for a phone, but that's it. At $45, they're OK priced, but I've often found them on sale or available with a discount code. They are very comfortable, which is why I like them.
The body (action?) shots were good to see for fit comparisons! 😂. Great work with the video!
I would love to try the Janji products, but their international (CDN) shipping costs, no prepaid customs and no free returns potentially adds a significant increase to the price. It makes you damn scared about having to get stuck with the customs fees and then after that… return costs and restocking fees.. I find myself at that checkout button.. then close the page. 🤷🏼♂️
Always love the summer short showdown!! Side note at 9:00 min mark.... DAMN!!! The GingerRunner is bringing the heat (Zoolander-esque) LOVE IT!!
I'm not even sure if they still make them, but the La Sportiva Auster has always been a favorite of mine!
pretty awesome to watch your stuff for years and then see you feature our shorts as #1. you're the man. more afo-vent shorts are coming soon...
North face flight series 2 and 1 are awesome shorts, But overpriced. Like the shredders too but they're sizing Fits small. The janji's look great I will try those as well. Thanks Ginger
I bought a pair of the Lulu shorts 3+ years ago and still wear them every time they are clean. Never have chafed me in any way and the ONLY sign of wear on them is that the reflective stripes have faded to worthlessness. The "tshirt loop" is laughable... Really wish I could have the Patagucci strider pro pockets integrated onto these shorts. THAT would be the perfect short. On a side note, the poses from this video need to be on a calendar.
No tracksmith ? Lol im a fan , I love there 4” van cortland 💪😎 great reviews by the way !!!
I love shorts I’m the crazy trainer guy who wears shorts when it’s snowing in downtown Reno in winter ❄️ lol !
I love Tracksmith too but I wish they had more pockets
There's nothing wrong with wearing shorts in winter!
Ethan, thanks for this. Just hooked myself up with 3 of your recommendations. Tested the NikeTrail so far 👍.
Blue Steel.... Entertaining and informative. Thx!
Plus, got a pair of LuLu's after last year. Supper comfy so I mostly just wear them around, not even for runs. An expensive, but surprisingly happy purchase.
I love the Dynafit DNA Ultra 2in1 shorts. They are super breathable and light and comfortable but...well errr expensive :(
I run in my Endura Humvie mtb shorts. They are heavy, but have tonnes of storage.
My favorite shorts this year are the Nike Flex Stride RUN DIVISION. They are so light and specifically the run division version have a boxer type of liner which is my preference. I truly find brief liners uncomfortable. They always ride up on me.
dad bod dance moves in full effect there! but good reviews, spot on
I've almost exclusively ran in Saucony. They were the first real running shorts I bought about 5-7 years ago, tried others based on price points, but have always came back during end of year sales in different colors. Was once suckered into a pair of North Face barely there setups in a 5" and realized I will never even put on a pair of 5'', let along make people see me run in them on the trail. Do any of these you mention offer the slightly longer length? You had 1 mentioned in a 6'', but that still scares me lol. I read all of the comments and pulled out a few of the longer recommendations by others that I will look into. Great community, thanks for keeping it light, pun intended!
You’ve got a career in modelling ahead of you
Those shorts need to be about an inch above midthigh or even shorter.
I only run in compression shorts. Typically 2XU but this year I've really been impressed by the "liners" from XOSkin, Path Project and WOLACO. The WOLACO liners have a phone pocket on the right and a smaller pocket that I put my SportBeans in. I'm a T1 diabetic so I always have to have a glucose source with me in case I crash. The XOSkins & Paths are really comfy and the WOLACOs are comfy and solid. All have different lengths. The key thing is that with this type of short, you just don't chafe, even in hundos, in the heat, when they are crusted with salt. No material flapping in the wind. Compression rules for me. I can't believe that everyone doesn't run this way. They'd rather buy lube, carry more weight and run slower I guess.
The Lululemon modelling damn near killed me laughing!
Decathlon do great running shorts
I personally like Odlo and Gore for shorts. Great products...
Agree with Odlo. Underrated. Zeroweight minimal shorts are a gem
The thumbnail on this one 😂
Arcteryx Motus!
Would love to wear just shorts. I have a horrible thigh chafe issue. If I don't have a thigh length running tight under my shorts, I can't get 1/2 mile without chafe. Shorts are almost an afterthought. The more basic the better.
That was an awesome video man 😂😂😂
Modeling game on point! 👌🏽
Good god man! Size up!
Never knew it was dee-nafit always thought it was dye-nafit 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Just goin off how they pronounce it - I always read it as DYE-nafit as well!
I switched to using NAKED running belt over chasing expensive shorts with storage. Much, much, cheaper. I mostly run in cheap Bayleafs now, which only downside is they stink.
I have just started trail running and now that the autumn is approaching I need a waterproof shell. What are your recommendations?
Ethan - Love your reviews but it would be great to have more visibility of the shape / design of the liners in your shorts reviews.
Better yet. Linerless shorts. Trust me
Yayyyyy the summer shorts showdown!!!
Great review!
Your height and shorts sizes would be great!
Does Kim do a review like this? I would be interested.
have you argued with the hairstyler lately?…. seriously… any thoughts about Path Project… I am happy with their gear…..
Looking for a short that provides excellent moisture/sweat control. Pockets are fine but don’t need them. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
This was precisely my goal over the summer. So far I have established that half tights are much better in terms of heat and moisture management because they don't allow a fog of hot crotch sweat to build up between skin and fabric.
I'm not sure i've found the perfect option yet but do really enjoy running in an old pair of 2XU compression shorts. I get that lots of people (men in particular) won't like the idea of running in half tights without a loose pair over the top but for me the mental leap has totally been worth it.
Salomon S/LAB shorts. The real unlined S/LAB, it's the best you can find. Expensive but you can hardly find more breathable, light and smooth.
Try the T8 Shorts from Hong Kong
Blue Steel to the max!
What size are you wearing?? Shorts on 🔥
Ethan do the lululemon shorts come with the leaf?
Path Projects make the best shorts by far. Sykes.
So the Janji Vent shorts have a secure place to put keys? The pockets look a little loosey goosey
They have a built in key hook that’s awesome
Would love someone thoughts on T-8 shorts…Thanks in advance
Have 3 pair, very light weight, as light or lighter than anything reviewed here. Multiple stretchy storage options all around the waist that will support phone and gels. Water bottle is a bit too much in my opinion. Being from the US… MUST size up to compensate for the Asian sizing. No liner, which is my preference. T8’s commando boxers are the most breathable Roos I’ve ever found, but ymmv on if they have the support you personally need. Work for me. Size up! Very Good hot weather option. This HK brand knows hot weather gear.
Ryan Clayton had a great review of them 2 weeks ago on his UA-cam channel
@@jaycoane6127 Awesome, thanks checking it out…
@@johnwielgus3017 Thanks, I ordered a pair and sized up due to your recommendation thanks again.
Corey Taylor loves shorts
Very "catwlk" :) Nice
solomon link broken
Any 9 inch shorts? Salomon cancelled theirs 😥
